  117. Bio: To say Vahn has had a hard life is to say stepping in the ocean could get one's feet wet. Born a shameful bastard to a wealthy family traveling in the Gahnawende Rim to the south, his father threw him into a river as an infant in an attempt to drown him...
  118.
  119. But he survived, and was discovered by an elderly witch out gathering herbs for her wares. She brought him home and raised him as her own, giving him the name he goes by and teaching him the basics of dark magic. This wasn't to last, either. When he was barely a teenager, a group of bandits raided the witch's hut looking for a rumored treasure she kept. When they didn't find it, they killed her and cut Vahn's throat, leaving the bodies to burn in the wreckage of the hut.
  120.
  121. He survived.
  122.
  123. Taking old witch Brannon's staff and rosaries, Vahn systematically hunted down each man involved in the raid. He was shot with arrows. He was cut with swords, struck many blows by axes and pierced with spears. He was pummeled with fists when all else failed. Bruised, battered, bloody, and beaten, Vahn survived. The raiders he tracked down one by one did not, save the last. That one was spared to spread the word.
  124.
  125. Death was coming.
  126.
  127. By the time he was twenty five Vahn Brannon was a feared name, both on the battlefield and among the bandits. He was known across the continent as a man who just would not die, no matter what was done to him. He was famed as a bounty hunter who always caught up to his target. It was whispered that he was a zealot of dark gods who granted their favor for whoever would pay him. He was rumored to be a generous soul who would give away his last penny to the poor and helpless. Legend had it that he was a warlock who stuck only to the shadows and detested daylight, and could tell your fortune from reading your palms. It was said he could see the future in smoke and fire. It was known that he carried a rosary with three bells on it, and the bells only rang when he finished his prey.
  128.
  129. Perhaps some of these stories were true. Perhaps all, or perhaps none of them were. And perhaps Vahn's reticence on the matter over the years was meant only to encourage the stories. For what is a mercenary without a reputation?
  130.
  131. ...
  132.
  133. That was until he took it upon himself to save the town of Kovitz, and instead ended up finding the town itself to be hopelessly corrupt and just as bad - if not worse - than the bandits plaguing it. Weary from long years of fighting alone, he reached out for allies one last time. With the fresh views provided by these younger mercenaries, he tempered the last remaining flames of his determination with caution, and discovered the truth of Kovitz.
  134.
  135. Once the slaves were freed and the ringleaders in Kovitz killed, Vahn traveled with a few of the mercenaries, eventually leaving his legacy in the hands of Braoul, 'The Jackal', and returned home to the Gahnawende Rim. Old and beaten - but unbroken - he finally managed to end his addiction to painkillers and spent his remaining days as a herbalist with what he had learned from his mother Marigold and what he had figured out over his many years of travel.
  136.
  137. Had it not been for the events to follow, the last guttering embers of his life would have ended there in Gahnawende; perhaps to the peace of old age, perhaps to the debilitating toll his body had paid from his pride never allowing it to rest or falter... or perhaps his past may have caught up with him one last time, for even his young allies in Kovitz had never known a world in which the name Vahn Brannon was not used to scare naughty children or strike fear in the hearts of the wicked. It was far from unlikely vengeance would be sought by the sinful, or a misguided heart of justice would seek to slay the Gahnawende Demon and bring an end to over four decades of terror upon the land.
  138.
  139. No, fate had one last request of Vahn, but maybe once this was over, his bones could finally rest...
