  3. Some Hanger 18, area 51 Information
  4.
  5.
  6. >A friend of mine who doesn't have access to the .net asks
  7. >
  8. >"...what can you find out about Area 51, Facility S4 in the
  9. > Mojave desert. I know SETI is, literally, right around the
  10. > corner from it but nobody's talking about what the other
  11. > is for."
  12.
  13. OK ... Camp Fire Story Time!
  14.
  15. Others have answered with the basic information about the Groom
  16. Lake Facility. Actually Groom is just one part of the Nevada Test Range,
  17. also known as the Nellis Test Range, or Nellis Complex.
  18.
  19. The site for the base was allegedly discovered by Lockheed legendary
  20. aircraft designer Kelly Johnson and one of the Lockheed Company test pilots
  21. who were out in a light plane looking for a secure facility to use in the
  22. testing and pilot training phases of the CIA U-2 program. The U-2 pilots
  23. called the place Watertown Strip. Lockheed employees have usually called the
  24. place The Ranch.
  25.
  26. The Lockheed Company pilot accompanying Kelly Johnson on this trip was
  27. supposedly the great Lockheed test pilot, Tony LeVier. I believe all this
  28. was circa 1955 or so.
  29.
  30. Recently the number of places called The Ranch by Lockheed employees, and
  31. other government and company employees, has grown to at least two. For
  32. example the Tonapah Test Range (TTR) is in the northwest corner of the Nellis
  33. Complex. TTR is also called The Ranch by some.
  34.
  35. There is a little information about this very early Groom history
  36. in Kelly Johnson's biography. Also some of it is in Francis Gary Power's
  37. book "Overflight" and also in Gann's novel about U-2 pilots, "Black Watch".
  38.
  39. Now for some interesting hints about some of the stuff they may have out
  40. there 'on the range'.
  41.
  42. I have excerpted some interesting quotes from several issues of
  43. a leading aerospace publication, Aviation Week and Space Technology (AW&ST)
  44. and a less well known publication, that imply some really interesting things.
  45.
  46. The less well known publication has nothing to do with aerospace, but
  47. the author of the second source article is an excellent researcher of
  48. BLACK (Top Secret Special Access Required) aircraft.
  49.
  50. This researcher used a pen-name at the time, but I will name him because
  51. his real name has since come out.
  52.
  53. The implications from these two different sources is that
  54. our country (the U.S.) is working on some VERY unusual aircraft.
  55.
  56. More unusual than you think!
  57.
  58. The implication is that the U.S. has not only JUST advanced the science
  59. of Aerospace, but that they're REALLY TRYING to advance it to an
  60. incredible level!
  61.
  62. The journalists/writer I'm excerpting have excellent contacts with
  63. leading Aerospace people. These articles have been mentioned in
  64. other contexts before, but there is more interesting information in
  65. them. The fact that these people are aerospace journalists and not
  66. UFO journalists or writers is significant.
  67.
  68. There are black aircraft flying in the Southwest as reported in the
  69. following AW&ST issues:
  70.
  71. Dec. 18, 1989 issue. Pages 42-43,
  72. Oct. 1, 1990 issue. Pages 20-23,
  73. Dec. 24, 1990 issue. Pages 41-44,
  74. Jan. 8, 1990 issue. Page 74 (A letter to the editor).
  75.
  76. SOME (not all) of these aircraft are VERY unusual. The term
  77. 'exotic aircraft' has started to be used in referring to them.
  78.
  79. Read each one of these carefully. I've capitalized certain words
  80. for effect, to make sure they're not missed.
  81.
  82. First, some of the AW&ST articles:
  83.
  84. "Although facilities in remote areas of the Southwest have been home to
  85. classified vehicles for decades, the NUMBER and SOPHISTICATION of new
  86. aircraft appear to have INCREASED SHARPLY over the last 10 years, when
  87. substantial funding was made available for "deep black" projects." (AW&ST
  88. 10/1/90 pg.20)
  89.
  90. "Do we now possess the "ULTIMATE" WEAPONS featured in comic books-
  91. the ones SO DEVASTATING any potential adversary would never think of
  92. disturbing the peace for fear of the good guys' retaliation?"
  93. (AW&ST 12/24/91 pg. 44).
  94.
  95. "SEVERAL VEHICLES, though, appear to INCORPORATE TECHNOLOGIES THAT OUTSTRIP
  96. THOSE now employed by engineers charged with developing MORE TRADITIONAL,
  97. CURRENT-GENERATION AIRCRAFT". (AW&ST 10/1/90 pg. 20)
  98.
  99. "In addition, there is substantial evidence that another family of
  100. craft exists that relies on EXOTIC PROPULSION AND AERODYNAMIC SCHEMES
  101. NOT FULLY UNDERSTOOD AT THIS TIME" (AW&ST; 10/1/90; pg 20).
  102.
  103. "Hard as it may be to fathom, there is REASON TO WONDER WHETHER COMPLETE
  104. KNOWLEDGE OF THE MOST EXOTIC AIRCRAFT MAY REACH "The Top," all for
  105. super-security." (AW&ST 12/24/91 pg. 44).
  106.
  107. "Industry experts who have worked on "deep black" programs, believe that
  108. it would be HIGHLY UNUSUAL for all but a very few political officials to
  109. have access to or knowledge of these programs. History has shown, they
  110. maintain, that elected officials and their staffs are poor security risks."
  111. (AW&ST 10/1/90 pg 21)
  112.
  113. "Several of these people had hands-on experience with a number of the
  114. classified vehicles. Although prevented from discussing specific projects,
  115. these individuals said, "There are BIGGER AND BETTER THINGS OUT THERE,"
  116. referring to aircraft based at the Nevada test locations."
  117. (AW&ST 10/1/90 pg 20)
  118.
  119. Now for the second source article. This article was written under the
  120. pen-name of Al Frickey, and it's entitled: "A Look at Aurora and Some
  121. UnFunded Opportunities (UFOs)". This piece appeared in (of all places)
  122. the Feb. 1988 issue of "Gung Ho" magazine. The person using the pen-name
  123. of Al Frickey was James Goodall.
  124.
  125. Jim has written several books on the Stealth Fighter (F-117A) and is
  126. planning several other books. He is a member of the Minnesota Air National
  127. Guard. Currently he is trying to get Zenith Aviation Books to publish
  128. the 400 page SR-71A Pilots Manual!
  129.
  130. Note, the term UnFunded Opportunities (UFOs) is NOT new. One place
  131. where one can find it used, is in the Sweetman/Goodall "Lockheed
  132. F-117A" book; pg. 17.
  133.
  134. There is no need to capitalize any of these paragraphs. The implications
  135. are more clear.
  136.
  137. Allow me to quote several sections of it:
  138.
  139. As for UnFunded Opportunities (UFOs), these are programs dealing with
  140. technology so advanced that one Air Force officer involved in SR-71
  141. development said: "We are flight testing vehicles that defy description.
  142. To compare them conceptually to the SR-71 would be like comparing
  143. Leonardo da Vinci's parachute design to the space shuttle."
  144.
  145. Other officers are similarly emphatic about the nature of these new systems.
  146. "We have things that are so far beyond the comprehension of the average
  147. aviation authority as to be really alien to our way of thinking,"
  148. says one retired colonel.
  149.
  150. "Lets put it this way", explained one retired Lockheed engineer. "We
  151. have things flying in the Nevada desert that would make George Lucas drool.""
  152.
  153. Now remember, these are Aerospace people saying these things, NOT UFO
  154. researchers!
  155.
  156. >Also, my friend would be interested in any new data on
  157. >Hangar 21.
  158.
  159. I'm certain your friend is referring to the Wright Patterson AFB (WPAFB)
  160. Hangar 18 stories that surfaced in 1974 (?) or so. As someone mentioned,
  161. there was also a movie out by this name. Probably the most similar and
  162. reliable information about these stories is the Barry Goldwater WPAFB
  163. story.
