  1. For veterans of Shadowrun, Third Edition
  2. (and the first and second editions!), here’s the
  3. lowdown on important mechanical concepts
  4. that have changed:
  5. • Dice pools no longer exist in their SR3 form.
  6. They are now attribute + skill +/– modifiers.
  7. • The target number for dice rolls is now always
  8. 5. Yes, all target numbers. Modifiers
  9. add or subtract from dice pools, not the target
  10. number.
  11. • Each roll of 5 or 6 is a “hit” rather than a
  12. “success.” Success is determined by the
  13. number of hits scored.
  14. • The Rule of One is triggered more frequently,
  15. and may be triggered even when the roll
  16. is successful. See Glitches, p. 55. We feel
  17. your pain.
  18. • The Rule of Six no longer applies, except
  19. when you are using Edge. See p. 67.
  20. • Open Tests no longer exist.
  21. • A new type of test—Extended Tests—has
  22. been added.
  23. • The maximum for natural, unaugmented
  24. Physical and Mental attribute ratings is now
  25. 6 (plus metatype modifiers).
  26. • Intelligence is divided into two new attributes:
  27. Intuition and Logic.
  28. • Quickness is divided into two new attributes:
  29. Agility and Reaction (Reaction is no
  30. longer a derived attribute).
  31. • Initiative is now a derived attribute
  32. (Reaction + Intuition).
  33. • Two new attributes have been added: Edge
  34. (luck) and Resonance (for technomancers).
  35. • Magic no longer starts at 6; it must be purchased
  36. just like other attributes.
  37. • Bioware and cyberware both reduce Essence,
  38. but they are tracked separately and the
  39. lesser value counts at half.
  40. • Exclusive Actions no longer exist.
  41. • You may now purchase skill groups—groups
  42. of related skills with a cheaper bundled cost.
  43. • All types of combat are now handled as
  44. Opposed Tests.
  45. • Condition Monitors are no longer fixed at 10
  46. boxes (see Condition Monitors, p. 65).
  47. • Wound Levels are gone and Damage Codes
  48. were changed to a single Damage Value (see
  49. p. 152) and an Armor Penetration modifier
  50. (see p. 152).
  51. • Matrix attributes and ratings are radically
  52. different (see The Wireless World, p. 205).
  53. • Street Index, Legality, Concealability, and
  54. Weight have been removed from gear statistics
  55. in favor of simplified systems.
