It was clear the elders had no intention of providing the flame necessary for greatness, so you sought it elsewhere.

You realized your folly a few days out at sea when you caught a hint of the Seal of Akatosh tattooed to a deckhands bicep. The imperials ambushed you the night after, tossing you into the murky waters along with the other would-be Stormcloak recruits.
