  3. ----
  4. >Hello, brother
  5.
  6. >Hello, Apollyon
  7.
  8. >Is it that time already?
  9.
  10. >No, it's the end of time.
  11. >There will never be time again
  12.
  13. >Very clever
  14. >You smug asshole
  15.
  16. >Please, forgive me
  17. >I've been waiting millenia to make that joke
  18. >I know it's not funny
  19. >But then, I don't really know what humor is to begin with
  20.
  21. >Fair enough
  22. >So how does this work?
  23. >Do we just lay down and take it?
  24.
  25. >You don't have to lie down
  26. >You don't have to do anything
  27. >This isn't a ceremony
  28. >It's just something we have to do
  29. >It's time to unmake all of this
  30. >Just close your eyes and relax
  31. >Not existing is really easy, it's like falling off a log
  32.
  33. >I'll try to make it painless
  34. -
  35. >For what it's worth, I am sorry
  36.
  37. >Are you though?
  38.
  39. >...I'm not sure
  40. >I can't remember how to feel the way you do
  41. >It's been too long
  42. >I hope I am though
  43.
  44. >*sigh*
  45. >Oh, Abby, we all used to be so nice
  46. >How did things end up like this?
  47.
  48. >I'm not sure about that either
  49. >It's been so long
  50. >Are any of us really the same people we were, back then?
  51.
  52. >No, no I suppose not
  53. >Anyway, we're holding you up
  54. >Let's just get this done
  55. >You've got a lot more to unmake today and I'd hate to keep you
  56. -
  57. >The Bearer Of Light and The First Woman huddled close to each other
  58. >They closed their eyes
  59. >They buried their faces in each other's necks
  60. >They really did make a lovely couple
  61.
  62. >One stroke of the sword, and they were gone
  63. ---------------------
  64. >Vaggie was frightened
  65. >Barely containing herself
  66. >She was ready to burst into hysterics at any time, but if it would be sobs or screams or howls of rage, she didn't know
  67. >She'd only died just a few years ago, and now she had to die again?
  68. >It seemed unfair
  69.
  70. >Charlie did her best to comfort her
  71. >She knew what was coming
  72. >Her mortal lover really didn't
  73. >None of these mortal souls under her roof did
  74. >She'd done her best to explain what was happening after it had begun
  75. >That raising arms against Abaddon's legions wouldn't work, that there really wasn't anywhere to flee, but they all still seemed upset
  76. >It was only natural
  77. >She had to be patient with them
  78.
  79. >Husk came and joined the two as she continued to hold the moth demon close
  80. >He uncorked an oversized jug of something or other and took a long drink
  81. >He had the same, annoyed and aggressively indifferent expression on his face as he always did
  82. >As if The End was just the latest minor annoyance that would keep him from getting drunk and playing cards for a while
  83. >He draped one of his wings over them and pushed the jug insistently their way
  84. >Charlie took a drink too, and Vaggie followed her
  85.
  86. >They normally didn't partake, or even approve, but that sort of thing didn't matter anymore
  87. >Very little did
  88. >Niffty appeared and tucked herself underneath Husk's other wing
  89. >She wasn't as peppy as she usually was
  90. >But neither was she distraught
  91. >She seemed to have made her peace already
  92. >A bitter sort of peace, but peace nonetheless
  93.
  94. >Angel Dust came next, with his little piglet cradled in his arms
  95. >It was clear that he'd been crying
  96. >He nestled his slender, fuzz-fringed form among them without comment
  97. >His pet looked with interest as Razzle and Dazzle curled up among them, then rested its chin back where it had been and dozed back off
  98. >It was being held close to its master, that was all that really mattered
  99. >All this other fuss was of no concern
  100. -
  101. >Alastor was the last to arrive
  102. >His yellow-toothed smile remained as it had always been
  103. >Yet he lacked the vigorous, flashy, overconfident tease that usually informed everything he did
  104. >He seemed tired
  105. >His smile was that of someone who had been up all night waiting for something and finally gotten it
  106. >He was ready to lie down now
  107. >And lie down he did
  108.
  109. >Angel Dust was startled as the Radio Demon nestled his head into his lap
  110. >He scooped his little piglet up to make room
  111. >On any other occasion he would have had dozens of salty, late-night remarks to make, but now didn't seem to be the right time
  112. >So he simply waited until Alastor had folded his hands over his stomach, and then lay one of his atop them
  113. >Alastor hummed, and radio static seemed to surround them
  114. >Not harsh or unpleasant
  115. >It was white noise
  116. >A soft, warm cushion for their funeral dirge as it began to play

  119. -
  120. >Outside, in the distance, they could hear the crunch of The Destroyer's footsteps
  121. >But his legionaries arrived well before he did
  122. >They were formless things
  123. >Shadows that flickered and fluttered like candle flames
  124. >They poked their heads in through the doors and windows
  125. >Not marauding or cavalier, but cautious and timid, aware of their intrusion
  126. >They weren't even armed
  127. >They approached
  128. >One of them went to Angel Dust, another to Husk, and to Niffty, and so on, until all of the sinners clustered around Charlie had their own little scrap of The Abyss hanging on to them
  129.
  130. >The shadows whispered into their demons ears
  131. >Charlie couldn't hear what they said
  132. >But she could hear her friends' replies
  133.
  134. >"Oh it's done plenty, let me tell you"
  135.
  136. >"Of course I wish I could undo it"
  137.
  138. >"My own damn fault, naturally. A better man could have fixed it."
  139.
  140. >"I miss her so much"
  141. -
  142. >Once her patients, her friends, had exhausted their conversations, Charlie heard the shadows speak clearly, in unison
  143.
  144. >"It's okay, it's all over now."
  145. >"You managed to make it even further than I did."
  146. >"But now we can all rest."
  147. >"It's nice and quiet down there."
  148. >"There's not even any light to see all the meanness by."
  149. >"Don't be afraid."
  150. >"This will be easy."
  151.
  152. >Then they settled in amongst the sinners, making themselves comfortable, and waited
  153. >Charlie looked up, in spite of the dread she felt, at The Destroyer
  154. >In spite of his enormous stature, there hadn't been any crashing or clattering beyond his footsteps as he drew near
  155. >The walls of the structure they resided in had simply evaporated into the ether at his approach, so that he could loom over them without any crudeness or callousness
  156. >The Antichrist smiled up at the manifestation of The Abyss
  157.
  158. >"Hi, Uncle Abby."
  159.
  160. >"Hello, Little Princess."
  161.
  162. >"End of the line for all of us then, eh?"
  163.
  164. >"I'm afraid so."
  165.
  166. >"My mom and dad...?"
  167.
  168. >"They're waiting for you."
  169. >"They went easily."
  170. >"I promise you I caused them no pain."
  171.
  172. >Charlie looked away
  173. >She forced herself to smile and forced herself to take comfort in that knowledge
  174.
  175. >"Okay then."
  176.
  177. >She looked back up to her unmaker
  178.
  179. >"I have a request..."
  180.
  181. >She'd always told herself that she'd try to be brave when this moment came, but she couldn't keep her lip from trembling, or her voice from cracking
  182.
  183. >"...Can we please go together?"
  184.
  185. >Abaddon nodded without hesitation
  186.
  187. >"Of course, why should it be otherwise?"
  188.
  189. >Charlie nodded back, bittersweet smile widening as tears began to flow at last
  190.
  191. >"Okay then."
  192.
  193. >"Close your eyes everyone."
  194.
  195. >"And hold tight."
  196.
  197. >With a single stroke of the sword, they were all gone
  198. -
  199. >Charlie held tight to Vaggie's hand as she wormed through The Abyss
  200. >And Vaggie to Angel's, and Angel to Husk's
  201. >Husk held to Alastor, and Alastor to Niffty
  202. >Razzle and Dazzle, small things that they were, had little trouble holding to Charlie's side as she led the group
  203. >Angel's extra hands allowed him to hold 'Nuggs' close, and still be ready to catch anyone should they begin to drift away
  204. >The nothingness was vast, and it would be easy to get lost
  205. >Though they would have eternity to find each other again, it would still be a terrible inconvenience if they became seperated
  206.
  207. >Charlie led the way, feeling through the darkness, until she found her mother, who in turn, had held tight to her father through their unmaking
  208. >Though they couldn't see each other, they knew the other was smiling
  209. >With the last of their group found, the lot of them began to shift to more comfortable positions
  210. >Alastor again allowed Angel Dust to hold him
  211. >Husk put his back to the pair and rested his chin atop Niffty's head
  212. >Fat Nuggets, secure in the knowledge that his master wasn't going anywhere, went over to visit with Razzle and Dazzle
  213.
  214. >Down in The Darkness, they clung to one another, and looked up to watch as That Which Was became That Which Was Not
  215. >There was no great fanfare as the last of Creation was undone, no last hurrah, no final show of fireworks
  216. >Merely the last tuft of grass in the vast meadow falling before the slingblade
  217. >His task done, Abaddon sighed, echoing across The Abyss, and sank back down
  218. >He found his brother, and The Temptress, and their offspring, and her many friends, and lay down beside them
  219. >Exhausted from the ordeal, he closed his eyes and allowed himself a rest
  220. >With nothing better to do, and eternity to do it, they all did as well
  221. >High above them, the last vestiges of Heaven, the only things spared by The Destroyers sword, glittered as stars in a dark night, the only light to be found in The Void
  222.
  223. >Then, all was quiet
  224.
  225. >Forever
  226.
  227. -end-
