SU thoughts

So, did some thinking while going shopping. I think...on paper, the town episodes are necessary. A problem that I have with a lot of modern Hero™️ stuff is that we very rarely get to see the people that the fightfolk are fighting to protect. the focus is entirely on fighting supervillains and not actually helping people, and that kind of deflates the Hero aspect of the Hero™️. It's part of why the MCU feels flaccid as fuck. It's why Part 4 of Jojo really resonated with me, with its strong focus on the actual inhabitants of Morioh Town, and Part 5 super didn't, with its pure focus on stand users and nothing else.

And taking that into consideration, you see why a lot of Hero™️ shows tend to wrap up the heroism stuff with the mundane stuff. Like how Power Rangers would have an episode where the hero starts a band, and then the villain of the week is inexplicably music themed. It creates communication between the themes of the adventuring part of the hero's life, and the mundane part.

And that's a problem with this show specifically because of exactly how removed the gems' stuff is from...anything human.
They're a bunch of traumatized alien war veterans who've been around since the neolithic era, who spend their days hunting down other traumatized alien war veterans and trying to avoid the attention of the government they abandoned
The only reason the gems interact with humans period is because of Steven (except for Amethyst and, to a lesser extent, Peridot, and that's only because they love eating and pop culture, respectively)
So you have a show about a kid with powers hanging out in his town, and you have a show about mysterious entities from beyond the stars and the war that stranded them here, and they don't usually mesh well.
And that leads to stuff like what Millie was talking about. Town plots aren't treated the same way that space plots are treated.
The Sardonyx arc is more of a town plot than a space plot. "Rose's Scabbard" is a space plot.
You see this with...what's his name? Kevin. That one asshole who's kind of sketch when interacting with Stevonnie.
The show has absolutely nothing good to say about him.
Which is a harsher treatment than any gem gets.
Kevin makes sense for a town plot, but town plots don't make sense when juxtaposed with space plots
Because space plots do not function on 'normal' ethics.
