>It knew, in an abstract sort of way, that it was having a nightmare. It knew this wasn’t real. It knew it was perfectly safe. It knew it was far away from Hell. It knew that in reality there wasn’t a single demon to be found anywhere for unfathomable distances in every direction.

>The writhing, shrieking tide of demons surging through the narrow passage would be upon it in seconds. Try as it might, it couldn’t make itself wake up. So it fled, running as fast as its legs would carry it. It encountered other exterminators as it ran. They too were retreating. Slowly. Too slowly.

>It gestured frantically at them and called out, but it could not drive them to move any faster. One after another, they were enveloped, disappearing into the churning mass of shadow and flesh with lingering screams abruptly cut short by a flurry of sickening, crunching sounds. As it continued to flee, knowing not where it was going, it saw one comrade who seemed to be lagging behind it only by a bit. Though the act was a breach of protocol, and probably suicidal, it stopped and attempted to pull them along. The effort was futile. No matter how desperately it attempted to grasp them and help them along, they somehow slipped through its fingers like handfuls of sand. It attempted to pick them up and simply carry them away from the danger, but that too failed. They resisted the effort as if they were burdened with lead weights and knee-deep in a quagmire, falling to their knees as its grip once again failed. They rose back up, but a smoldering projectile suddenly leapt forth from the horde and clipped them as they stood.
