  1. "From what I understand," Free said, "the government has this new 'Space Sling' they're going to try out. Basically, a contained capsule is catapulted out to space. The prisoners will be placed in the capsules, and the hurled out to Thanos. Apparently it's so fast and accurate that they can get them right onto the moon at a speed that deconstructs molecules and therefore acts as a sort of teleportation device. They used the Sling to send robots and materials out to Thanos to set up the prison, and now they plan to use it to transport the prisoners. It's all till in the experimental stages of development..."

  4.
  5. As the elevator began to descend, he looked up, terrified of what he would see. The Sling's basket was just ad the edge of leaving the dome completely for its journey through space to the moon Thanos.
  6.
  7. In the blink of an eye, Jason Turned his head and looked down. It was as if even from this distance Free could feel the burning of those eyes boring through his soul. What was the monster thinking?
  8.
  9. Suddenly Jason turned his attention back to the cage. He crouched low, and then propelled himself like an athlete into the air. The machete broke through the top of the airlock and the fist of his other hand smashed through the opening.
  10.
  11. Free watched in awe as Jason seemed to be pulled into space, and a spark of hope revived in him. Maybe the universe was benevolent after all! The vortex was forcing him out of the airlock. He would be sucked to his doom!
  12.
  13. At that moment, the basket moved away from the dome. Jason lunged. And reached for it. And grabbed on. He pulled himself up and out of the airlock and clung to the bottom of the basket as it now freely fell forward into space.
  14.
  15. Free, amazed, watched as Jason crawled the length of the basket and clutched onto the arm that held it.
  16.
  17. He should be dead. How could he breathe up there? The nano-ants Castillo talked about,t hat had been implanted into Jason many years before Castillo even got his hands on the killer, they must have been revived as well when he brought Jason back.
  18.
  19. "The nano-ants are in the programming," MT said, as if reading Free's mind. "And of course when the two Jasons amalgamated..."
  20.
  21. "So we revived the ants, and even if we hand't, they were transferred from two to three," Free said, not really a question, because he knew the answer. He was really just thinking out loud. It explained why the Jasons never really got hurt and why he revived almost instantly. Why he had the power of ten men. Why he could survive in airless space, even though he was still human, or partially so.
  22.
  23. "Yes," the AI confirmed, although Free had no need of confirmation.
  24.
  25. The elevator reached the surface and Free dragged himself out. He looked around at the camp, the destruction and bodies. As the only living being on this moon he felt despair settle over him. Above him, the Sling moved away rapidly on its course through dark space toward an even darker point in the sky; Thanos.
  26.
  27. "He'll survive it, won't he?" He asked MT.
  28.
  29. "Quite likely."
  30.
  31. "And he'll kill all the prisoners?"
  32.
  33. "If he can. Of course."
  34.
  35. "Why?" Free asked, as any son would ask about the actions of a father that were inexplicable; in the case this case the actions of a mass murderer. And the "why" had so many connotations. Too many.
  36.
  37. "That's who he is," MT said.
