- Homework: p. 181 part B - add commas to the paragraph as needed
- ---
- p. 183-4 part B - Combine the sentences into one complex sentence that includes a main clause and an adjective clause. Use commas if necessary.
- Specifically: make the second sentence an adjective clause in the first sentence
- 1 Jamila Haddad, who is a high school student in Chicago, ran away from home last week.
- 2 She ran away to avoid a marriage that was arranged by her parents.
- 3 Mr. and Mrs. Haddad, who are from Lebanon, are very traditional.
- 4 Jamila is the oldest daughter in the Haddad family, which immigrated to this country seven years ago.
- 5 Her parents want her to marry a man who is 32 years old.
- 6 The husband-to-be lives in Lebanon, which is a country in the Middle East.
- 7 He owns a business which is very successful.
- 8 People who know him say he is very nice.
- 9 Jamila, who wants to go to college in her new country, ran away from home rather than marry the man.
- 10 Mr. and Mrs. Haddad, who thought they had arranged a good future for their daughter, don’t understand why she ran away.

- Sometimes the adjective clause is separated from the noun by a prepositional phrase:
- You should read the book on the table, which I told you about yesterday.
- - I told you about the book yesterday, not the table.
- (We can think of “on the table” as identifying (necessary) information about the book, so it comes before the extra information “which I told you about yesterday.)
- Strange: You should read the book, which I told you about yesterday, on the table.
- ---
- Sometimes “which” means an entire sentence or situation, not just a noun:
- I grew up with seven siblings, which made the house very noisy at times.
- - “which” = “growing up with seven siblings”
- Because I was the oldest, I had to do most of the chores, which I hated.
- - “which” could be “chores” or “having to do most of the chores”, it’s unclear
