  1. >You slowly crack your front door open and peek inside.
  2. "Fluttershy?" you call out.
  3. >When you don't get a response, you step inside and search every room, softly calling her name every so often.
  4. >You check our bedroom.
  5. >Under the covers and in the closet.
  6. >She's nowhere to be found.
  7. >You go outside and walk around the house several times.
  8. >Still no sign of her.
  9. >Sitting down on the couch inside, you stop to think.
  10. >'Alright, just calm down,' you tell yourself.
  11. >'It's still early in the day.'
  12. >'She could just be off somewhere to cool down or something.'
  13. >'It's going to be fine.'
  14. >'I'll just explain to her it wasn't what it looked like.'
  15. >'Rarity's her best friend.'
  16. >'And I'm her husband.'
  17. >'It's just a misunderstanding.'
  18. >An idea.
  19. >You get off the couch and start cleaning the house.
  20. >It had been a mess recently, so it needs a good cleaning.
  21. >Maybe she won't be so angry if she comes back to a tidy home.
  22. --
  23. >It's early in the evening now.
  24. >You had finished pick up around the house and were waiting on the couch once again.
  25. >Fluttershy still hasn't come back.
  26. >You check the time and decide to make dinner.
  27. >You search the cupboards and pull out enough to throw something together for the two of you.
  28. >With the table set, you sit and wait.
  29. >The night moves on and your food gets cold.
  30. >You leave her a plate, but you throw yours away.
  31. >You're not that hungry right now anyways.
  32. >You decide to go sit on the couch and reflect.
  33. >The argument started when you made a joke about her taking a long time in the shower.
  34. >She took it seriously and began to berrate you about how long you take in the morning what with shaving, showering, and getting dressed.
  35. >You shrugged it off and took your morning shower and got ready for the day.
  36. >When you left your towel on the floor, Fluttershy decided to use that as a reason to complain some more.
  37. >You told her to just calm down, but she wasn't hearing it.
  38. >It got to the point where she just got so unlistenable you couldn't stand much more of it.
  39. >So this entire situation started over a poorly placed joke.
  40. >The door shakes a little, prompting you to call Fluttershy's name once more.
  41. >After listening to the whistle from outside, you determine that it's just the wind.
  42. >You pass out as you wait up for Fluttershy.
  43. --
  44. >You sit straight up and look around.
  45. >Everything is how it was when you fell asleep last night.
  46. >You go to the kitchen.
  47. >Her plate is still untouched.
  48. >You check the bedroom.
  49. >The covers are still neatly tucked.
  50. >She still hasn't come back.
  51. >You go back downstairs and open the front door.
  52. >You stand in the doorway, staring up at this grey sky morning.
  53. >You sigh deeply.
  54. >Maybe your friends have seen her?
  55. >Walking into Ponyville, you stop by Twilight's house first.
  56. >Upon answering the door, she quickly slams it in your face and throws a barrier spell around it.
  57. >You can still open it, but you take the hint and just leave.
  58. >Pinkie Pie's hair just deflates when you question her.
  59. >She asks you to leave and returns to work in the kitchen of Sugarcube Corner.
  60. >You decide to check with Applejack.
  61. >You are met with a swift pair of hooves to the stomach as you go to say 'Hi'.
  62. >"Ah don't want ya comin' 'round, ya hear?" shouts Applejack. "You're lucky Ah don't keep my promise about what would happen if ya hurt Fluttershy."
  63. "But... I didn't do anything."
  64. >"Get out," said Applejack as she flicked her tail at you and walked away.
  65. >So... Is that it?
  66. >Is all of this time gone to waste?
  67. >Is it really over so suddenly?
  68. --
  69. >That night, you sit on your couch and stare at the wall.
  70. >You searched everywhere she may go.
  71. >Any place she might be.
  72. >If anyone has seen her, they ain't saying.
  73. >Rarity refuses to answer her door.
  74. >And you haven't even seen Rainbow Dash to try and ask her.
  75. >You sink low in your seat.
  76. >You can't be in this house right now.
  77. >You rise to your feet and walk out, leaving the door unlocked for Fluttershy in case she comes back.
  78. >The air is foggy and still from the light rain this morning and the night before.
  79. >It's chilly outside, but you don't need a jacket.
  80. >You stuff your hands in your pockets and continue walking.
  81. >You can't believe this is really happening.
  82. >You really lost her, haven't you?
  83. >It wasn't that bad.
  84. >Rarity kissed you.
  85. >And only for a second or two.
  86. >It... You...
  87. >You shiver and hug your arms.
  88. >It wasn't your fault... but...
  89. >You can't help but feel sick to your stomach.
  90. >Not because of Fluttershy or Rarity.
  91. >Not because of the cold.
  92. >But because you didn't exactly dislike Rarity's kiss.
  93. >You actually found it rather enjoyable.
  94. --
  95. >You shake the thoughts from your head.
  96. >It's not like you slept with her or something.
  97. >It was a quick kiss.
  98. >You walk by patches of red flowers on the roadside.
  99. >Huh...
  100. >You remember when you used to pick them for Fluttershy for no reason.
  101. >She would find them on the counter and have a delightful snack.
  102. >You close your eyes and smile.
  103. >You could have done that once or twice since the return of spring.
  104. >You know, you also remember the sunset.
  105. >Oh how she loved to sit and watch with you.
  106. >You could have done that more as you aren't currently working your days away.
  107. >You pick your head up and stare off into an open field at the horizon.
  108. >You spot that old oak tree where you first met Fluttershy standing tall on that hill.
  109. >Curiosity gets the better of you and you start through the wet grass towards it.
  110. >You've met Fluttershy here several times in the past during times of grief and strife.
  111. >The place must be magical or something.
  112. >You decide to take a seat in the sheltered grass beneath the thick leaves.
  113. >You hum to yourself.
  114. "Don't cry my love, don't cry no more."
  115. >You sit and wait.
  116. >She should come around any minute now.
  117. >She always does.
  118. "A crashing sky, a rolling screen."
  119. --
  120. >The chirping of birds rouses you from your sleep.
  121. >You find yourself curled into a ball beneath the tree.
  122. >Wow...
  123. >You're lucky you didn't get a cold or hypothermia or something.
  124. >You feel fine and stand and stretch.
  125. >So this lead was a bust as well.
  126. >Maybe she went back home during the night.
  127. >She could have stayed when you were gone.
  128. >You make your way back home.
  129. >Perhaps you can actually explain to her what happened.
  130. >Arriving at your house, you once again find it void of any life other than your own.
  131. >You check the rooms.
  132. >She still hasn't come back.
  133. >You fall back onto the couch and stare at the ceiling.
  134. >You grab the couch pillow and force it over your face.
  135. "Damn it!" you shout into the pillow.
  136. >You're not mad at anyone but yourself.
  137. >You saw the signs from Rarity, sure.
  138. >But you thought it was just playful flirting.
  139. >You really are an idiot.
  140. >Now you can only pray that it isn't too late to fix this.
  141. >You need to find her and beg her forgiveness.
  142. >But you've tried to find her.
  143. >None of your friends will tell you where she is.
  144. >And you've checked everywhere you can possibly think of.
  145. >The only thing you can think to do now is wait.
  146. >You walk into the kitchen and open the cupboard.
  147. >A full bottle of apple whiskey sits untouched.
  148. >You shrug.
  149. "I guess now is a better time than ever."
  150. --
  151. >You haven't had a decent drink in months.
  152. >Not to mention you haven't eaten all day.
  153. >A few shots got you more than a little drunk.
  154. >You lie on your couch and wait.
  155. >You wait for hours.
  156. >Hours turn to days.
  157. >You never left your house.
  158. >You've rummaged the cupboards for snacks, but you haven't had a real meal yet.
  159. >You've closed the curtains to keep the sun out and off of your face.
  160. >The lights stay off except for the kitchen.
  161. >The pictures of you and her on the walls around you seem to make it hurt worse.
  162. >You've never been the kind to let your feelings show, but tonight...
  163. >You set your bottle down and squeeze your eyes shut as hard as you can.
  164. >The feeling of a cold tear runs down your cheek and drips onto your shirt.
  165. >You prayed that someone would stop by to check in with you.
  166. >You could really use the boost knowing someone still cares about you.
  167. >Too bad everyone loathes you now.
  168. >You've taken to writing letters to Fluttershy.
  169. >Each one only being a line or two.
  170. >'Please come home,'
  171. >'I love you.'
  172. >You would send them had you known where she was.
  173. >But you can't help but feel how cold and flat your words are.
  174. >You don't know what to do.
  175. >Your friends have abandoned you.
  176. >The one pony who can help avoids you like the plague.
  177. >You're going insane just trying to figure everything out.
  178. >You decide to write one long letter that you will just leave for her.
  179. --
  180. >'If anyone asks,'
  181. >'Tell them I went to Las Pegasus.'
  182. >'Tell them I'm living out on the coast like a hermit.'
  183. >'Tell them I decided to go back on the road and live like a gypsy.'
  184. >'But the truth is that I've gone crazy.'
  185. >'I'm missing you and I can't stand life without you.'
  186. >'I know I've said it before, and I know I don't say it often enough,'
  187. >'But I love you.'
  188. >'If you need me, and if you find this note, you can find me at Ghastly Gorge.'
  189. >You wake up several hours later.
  190. >You fell asleep mid-penstroke.
  191. >You set your pen down and re-read your letter several times.
  192. >'You are a selfish son of a bitch,' you tell yourself.
  193. >You leave the letter on the kitchen table with a small bouquet of those roadside flowers.
  194. >You go outside and take the first steps of a long, long walk.
  195. >It must have been around 4 am.
  196. >The moon was shining bright as the street lamps in Ponyville.
  197. >You constantly ask yourself what you're doing.
  198. >Life can't always be perfect.
  199. >But when hard times hit, you would prefer to have someone there with you.
  200. >You always thought that if it ever came to this, you would be able to carry on without a problem.
  201. >But as it turns out, you never really know until it actually happens.
  202. >And damned if you ever thought it would really happen.
  203. >As much as you question it, you feel you already know how this will end.
  204. --
  205. >You stand at the bottom of a steady hill.
  206. >At the top stands a dead, withered tree.
  207. >Your slow ascent up the hill frightens you.
  208. >Coming up to the tree, you now stand at the edge of a very deep gorge.
  209. >The roots of the tree hang halfway off.
  210. >Anymore erosion and that tree is going to topple deep into the ravine below.
  211. >You dangle your toes over the ledge.
  212. >You only wish she was here.
  213. >She always knows the perfect thing to say.
  214. >She could save you from yourself.
  215. >She is literally an angel in every way, shape, or form.
  216. >Finally taking a seat, you dangle your legs over the ledge.
  217. >You don't know what to do.
  218. >You close your eyes and take a deep breath in.
  219. --
  220. >"What do you think you're doing?"
  221. >You open your eyes.
  222. "Rainbow Dash?"
  223. >The cyan pegasus was floating in front of you, both front legs extended as if to catch you should you fall.
  224. >"I said, what do you think you're doing?" asked Rainbow Dash.
  225. "I, uh... What are... you doing?" you stutter.
  226. >Rainbow Dash's angry glare causes you to feel so much shame from what you were seriously just contemplating.
  227. >You stand up and step away from the ledge.
  228. >Rainbow Dash spins and bucks oh so very hard into your chest.
  229. >You fall backwards to the ground, shouting in pain and clutching your torso.
  230. >"Are you out of your mind?!" shouted Rainbow.
  231. >You slowly rise to your feet.
  232. "Was that for kissing Rarity as well?"
  233. >"That's for being a idiot!" she shouted.
  234. "Right. If it makes you feel any better, I wasn't gonna do anything."
  235. >"Hmph. Coulda fooled me," scoffed Rainbow.
  236. --
  237. >Several awkward seconds tick by.
  238. "So... Is it by sheer coincidence you're here or what?"
  239. >Rainbow Dash reaches back and holds your letter in her mouth.
  240. "Oh... Right."
  241. >Rainbow dropped it at her hooves.
  242. >"I came to talk to you. It's important."
  243. "Is it about Rarity? It wasn't my fault."
  244. >"It's not about Rarity. And I already know."
  245. "Know what? That it she kissed me?"
  246. >"Yeah."
  247. >You blink twice.
  248. "Then where were you a week ago!" you shout.
  249. >"Hey, Fluttershy told me when she left. I saw her crying and asked her. I would have marched into the boutique, but Fluttershy needed me more than you and Rarity needed a kick in the flank."
  250. "Wait a minute. So where did Fluttershy go?"
  251. >"Her parents' home in Cloudsdale."
  252. >You stand there with a dumbfound look on your face.
  253. >Then you facepalm.
  254. >You shake your head.
  255. "How do we get to Cloudsdale?"
  256. >"Sorry dude. Pegasi only. And besides, she's not in Cloudsdale anymore."
  257. "Then where is she if she's not at her parents'?"
  258. >"She's at the-"
  259. >Rainbow's eyes widen and her ears fall flat.
  260. >"Gah! I forgot! Anon! We gotta get to the hospital!"
  261. >Her shouting causes you a slight panic.
  262. "What? Why? Is it Fluttershy? What happened!"
  263. >"The foal's coming!"
  264. --
  265. >You calm down immediately and stare at her with an unamused expression.
  266. "Whatever."
  267. >"Whatever? How can you say that about your own family?"
  268. "Because you're lying. The foal's not due for another 6 weeks or so."
  269. >"That's why this is so urgent! We need to get to the hospital now!"
  270. >You take a seat on the grass.
  271. "Don't they have hospitals in Cloudsdale? Why would she be in Ponyville?"
  272. >"She asked them to fly her by chariot to Ponyville. She wants you to be there."
  273. >You suppose that makes sense.
  274. "But why would she after what she saw with Rarity? Why would she just-"
  275. >Rainbow Dash grabs you by the shirt and gets face-to-face.
  276. >"Anonymous... MOVE!"
  277. >She shoves you back and you scramble to your feet.
  278. >She's really determined to get you moving.
  279. >Maybe there's some truth to this after all.
  280. >You start walking towards Ponyville.
  281. >Rainbow Dash prods you to go faster by repeatedly giving you a swift kick to the ass.
  282. >By the time you hit Ponyville, she's got you near sprinting.
  283. >She flies next to you and directs you to the hospital.
  284. >By the time you walk through the doors, you fully believe what Rainbow Dash was telling you.
  285. --
  286. >Your friends and Fluttershy's parents are sitting in the waiting area.
  287. >Their heads turn to you as you enter.
  288. >"Anon?" they ask in surprise.
  289. "Which room?" you ask.
  290. >"Anon," said Twilight. "You can't just-"
  291. "Which room!" you demand.
  292. >"I got it," called Rainbow.
  293. >She flew from the secretary's desk and down the halls with you on her tail.
  294. >"There!" pointed Rainbow at a door down the hall
  295. >Several nurses ran into the room.
  296. >Rainbow stayed back as you sprinted down the hall.
  297. >You almost slipped and fell on your face as you stopped to turn into the emergency room.
  298. >And wouldn't you know it?
  299. >Fluttershy lies in the bed, two nurses tend to her while other doctors prepare.
  300. "Thanks for waiting," you say with a smile.
  301. >Fluttershy sees you at the door and a feeling of deep relief washes over her.
  302. >A nurse moves over as you take a knee beside Fluttershy.
  303. >"Our foal can't come without his daddy," whispered Fluttershy.
  304. >Fluttershy's smile vanishes and she lets out a siren's scream.
  305. >She reaches for your hand with a wing and squeezes.
  306. >You didn't even know pegasi had this much strength in their wings.
  307. >It kind of hurts.
  308. >One doctor positions himself at the foot of the bed.
  309. >He tells a nurse something and she runs to Fluttershy's side and speaks into her ear.
  310. >Fluttershy's screams get louder.
  311. >Suddenly, quiet.
  312. --
  313. >The doctor looks into his hooves, his expression that of deep worry.
  314. >Then the soft cry of a baby.
  315. >"Aha!" cheers the doctor.
  316. >The nurse walks over with a blanket and wraps the foal up.
  317. >"Congratulations," said the doctor. "It's a girl."
  318. >He cradles the blanketed foal in one leg and gives her to you.
  319. "She's so small."
  320. >You tickle her cheek with a finger.
  321. >The foal fell asleep in your arms.
  322. >You place the quiet bundle on the bed for Fluttershy to see.
  323. >Fluttershy takes the foal and cradles her, nuzzling her snout.
  324. >The doctor mentions how they want to take her for testing.
  325. >Being born so early, they want to make sure she's healthy before you take her home.
  326. Fluttershy reluctantly gives up the foal and a nurse wheels her away.
  327. >"I think I'm going to take a nap..." mumbled Fluttershy.
  328. >You think she just fell asleep mid-thought.
  329. >You pull up a chair and sit next to her, softly stroking her hair.
  330. >Rainbow Dash pokes her head in the door.
  331. >"Hey! I saw them wheel the foal out and-"
  332. "Ssh!"
  333. >You point to the slumbering pegasus next to you.
  334. >"Sorry," Rainbow whispered. "Is everything alright?"
  335. >You nod.
  336. >"I'm gonna go tell everypony the news," she says as her head disappears from view.
  337. >You watch Fluttershy's chest slowly rise and fall.
  338. --
  339. >For several hours, you sit there in silence.
  340. >Finally, a soft knock at the door.
  341. >You find Steelwing standing in the doorway.
  342. >He motions for you to follow.
  343. >You kiss Fluttershy softly on the forehead and follow Steelwing out.
  344. "What's the word?" you ask as you walk.
  345. >"The doctors can't find any obvious complications," said Steelwing. "They just rolled her into the nursery."
  346. >You walk into the viewing area and find all your friends pressing their faces against the glass.
  347. >They move so you can have the best view.
  348. >You crouch at the window and rest your head on your arms against the window sill.
  349. >Your little girl lies in her little wheeled bed, sleeping like a rock.
  350. >She's wearing tiny pink socks and a band around her ankle with your name on it.
  351. >The coat was a deep yellow.
  352. >A tint of orange made it look gold.
  353. >The hair was like orange sherbert.
  354. >A single pink lock fell in front of her eyes.
  355. >She looks like her mother, but took her grandfather's colors.
  356. >As you stare through the glass, your mind goes to the stallion standing next to you.
  357. >The trouble you went through with Steelwing and the bonding moments you've had.
  358. >You were after his daughter.
  359. >Now it's your turn to be the defensive father.
  360. >Steelwing's got a hoof resting on your shoulder, staring at his new grand daughter.
  361. >"She's a real miracle, isn't she?" he asked.
  362. >You nod.
  363. "All things considering, she's easily the greatest miracle in the world today."
  364. >"I believe it. She's going to grow up to do amazing things."
  365. "There's not a doubt in my mind."
  366. --
  367. >A nurse trots up and tugs on your shirt sleeve.
  368. >"Anonymous?" she asks.
  369. >You turn to face her.
  370. "Yes?"
  371. >"Mrs. Fluttershy is awake and wishes to speak with you."
  372. >You nod.
  373. "I'll be back in a few," you say as you stand and start walking out.
  374. >You feel a tug on your pant leg.
  375. >You look down to see Rarity looking up at you with guilt-filled eyes.
  376. >"Anonymous..." she whispers. "I just want to say... I'm really, truly sorry about-"
  377. >You crouch and press a finger softly to her lips, shushing her.
  378. "I don't think it's me you should be apologizing to," you whisper back.
  379. >You look up and see the rest of your friends are still occupied with watching the foal.
  380. >You motion for Rarity to follow and you walk to Fluttershy's room.
  381. >You knock twice as you enter, Rarity nervously follows behind.
  382. "Evening, sleepy head. I hope you had a good nap."
  383. >Fluttershy smiled and nodded.
  384. >"Where's our little filly?" she asked.
  385. >You gave her a kiss on the forehead.
  386. "The nursery. Despite being born way early, they can't seem to find and obvious problems. Talk about lucky, right?"
  387. >Fluttershy laid her head back.
  388. >"Wonderful."
  389. --
  390. >"Fluttershy? Darling?"
  391. >Rarity stepped forward and Fluttershy turned her head towards her.
  392. >"Hello Rarity," she greeted with a smile.
  393. >Rarity looked away, not daring to look Fluttershy in the eyes.
  394. >"Fluttershy, I... I just want you to know how sorry I am."
  395. >Fluttershy looked at you and you quickly put a finger to your lips.
  396. >A few tears started to well up in Rarity's eyes.
  397. >"I was being selfish and inconsiderate of your feelings," continued Rarity. "I betrayed you and your trust. Anon's as well."
  398. >She finally looked at Fluttershy.
  399. >"Will you ever forgive me? I'm so sorry! It won't happen again! Promise!"
  400. >You and Fluttershy exchange glances before laughing amongst yourselves.
  401. >Rarity's face was one of complete dumbfoundment.
  402. >"I, uh... What's happening?" she asked.
  403. "Rarity, relax. We know it was... Well I can't say innocent, but it was just a kiss. It just so happens everyone over reacted."
  404. >You rub the back of your head ashamedly and look at your feet.
  405. "Some more than others..."
  406. >"So... you're not mad?" asked Rarity.
  407. "Not mad. Just disappointed. Not just you, but ourselves."
  408. >"You gotta understand," said Rarity. "You're the only stallion who's ever been so kind to me and I feel we really connect."
  409. >Did you not just explain this to her?
  410. "I'm married," you tell her flat out.
  411. >Wow, that was harsh.
  412. >"Yes, yes I know..." said Rarity. "That's what seemed to make it more... exciting."
  413. >You look to Fluttershy.
  414. >You have no idea what to say.
  415. >Fluttershy is covering her mouth with a hoof to surpress a laugh.
  416. >Eh, whatever.
  417. "Hey Fluttershy, guess what?"
  418. >"Hm?"
  419. >You crouch next to her bed and plant one on her lips.
  420. "Our little bundle of joy is coming home tomorrow afternoon," you say when you part.
