  1. >You are Anonymous.
  2. >There are two things you will never do.
  3. >These things may seem harmless, but past experience has taught you otherwise.
  4. >First, you will never get involved, when you get involved things happen, and those things lead to other things that scare you.
  5. >Second, they are friends, never anything more.
  6. >How you got into this situation, you'll never know.
  7. >However, the decision to not do these two things came from an event that took place about a month ago.
  8. >You adapted quicker than you thought you would, given the situation.
  9. >A house and a job were rather easy to obtain, so easy that you're still slightly paranoid about some secret debt collector coming to your door and demanding a ridiculous amount of money.
  10. >All in all, you've become rather comfortable aside from the fact that you're surrounded by ponies.
  11. >Very intelligent ponies, but ponies nonetheless.
  12. >That's actually where your two rules come in.
  13. >When you follow these rules things are comfortable and there is usually nothing to worry about.
  14. >However, when you break these rules...
  15. >Well, things get out of hand.
  16. >Today you have plans to help out Fluttershy in taking care of her animals.
  17. >You get done with your morning routine and exit your home, taking a deep breath of fresh air as you close the door behind you.
  18. >Ponyville is only a minute's walk away.
  19. >"Heya, Anon!"
  20. >You look slightly down and see Rainbow Dash, your bro.
  21. "What's up?"
  22. >"I was just heading out to Canterlot."
  23. "Right, that two day thing with the Wonderbolts."
  24. >She grins, "Yep, figured I'd remind you so you wouldn't wonder where I was."
  25. "That's alright, I had plans today anyways."
  26. >"Right, Fluttershy," she says with a smirk.
  27. >There is a moment of silence.
  28. "Uh... is there a reason you said it like that?"
  29. >Her innocent look doesn't fool you. "Said it like what?"
  30. >You kick dirt at her.
  31. >"Hey!"
  32. "You're not as amusing as you think you are, Dash. You know the rules."
  33. >"Hey, just because YOU'RE uncomfortable doesn't change the way things are."
  34. >You frown.
  35. "Don't remind me."
  36. >"You know Anon, it'd be fine."
  37. >You sigh.
  38. "Tell that to my brain."
  39. >"Hah, putz. I'll see you in a few days."
  40. "Yeah yeah, get outta here."
  41. >Dash sticks her tongue out at you, turns around, and launches into the air with no warning. This sends a draft into your face and messes up your hair.
  42. >You sigh and shake your head, setting off towards the opposite side of town.
  43. >Fluttershy's cottage.
  44. --------
  45. >When you get to Fluttershy's place she's nowhere in sight.
  46. >Cats, birds, dogs, chickens... all manner of creatures are running around. What really baffles you is how clean it all is. Fluttershy is immaculate in keeping her home and the area around it spotless.
  47. >Even her chicken coop has barely a stench to it.
  48. >You wonder how she does it every time you drop by for a visit.
  49. >Since she's not in sight you figure she's in her house.
  50. >You continue down the path until you reach her door, and you knock on it.
  51. >After a few seconds of waiting the door flies open to reveal... nothing.
  52. >You raise an eyebrow in confusion, then look down and see Angel scowling up at you.
  53. "Oh... you."
  54. >You are not amused.
  55. >The bunny just keeps glaring at you. You're afraid if you try to call out for Fluttershy he'll attack you. It's not that he can do any serious harm, just that you don't feel like getting bit by an asshole rabbit today.
  56. >You sigh.
  57. "Is Fluttershy home?"
  58. >His eyes narrow.
  59. >The door pulls away from Angel, and there is Fluttershy, smiling at you, "Hello Anon. Don't worry about Angel-bunny, he's just moody because he didn't get what he wanted for breakfast."
  60. >You laugh and shake your head.
  61. "I still can't believe he actually has the guts to give you trouble."
  62. >She smiles and blushes, looking away, "Oh, it's not too much of an issue. Um... I know you wanted to help, but I've already done everything for the day. Do you uh... want to..." she trails off into silence.
  63. "What was that?"
  64. >She frowns and looks away.
  65. >Angel starts throwing a shit fit, stomping around on the ground. Eventually he hops off, leaving the two of you to the awkward silence.
  66. >Finally, you can't take it anymore.
  67. "Do I want to what?"
  68. >She scuffs the ground with her hoof and sighs, "Come in?"
  69. >There's the first red flag, but it's not like you can be an asshole and turn her down.
  70. "...Sure."
  71. >She gives you a soft smile.
  72. >What the fuck is this shit?
  73. >Why does your chest feel funny?
  74. >No, this is not acceptable.
  75. >She steps aside and you walk in, taking deep breaths and trying not to freak out.
  76. >"Are you alright, Anon?"
  77. >Exhale.
  78. >Inhale.
  79. "Yeah, totally fine, so... do you just... wanna hang out?"
  80. >She nods softly and smiles, "I know how you like to read, so I borrowed some books from the library. I um..." She falls silent. After a moment she takes a deep breath, "Would you like to read something? I have the new Daring Do."
  81. "So you're the one that checked that out."
  82. >Fluttershy closes the door behind you, still smiling, "Yes."
  83. >Okay, there's the second red flag.
  84. >You've told Fluttershy you really like the Daring Do series, and it's pretty obvious that she checked it out for this.
  85. "Alright, yeah... yeah that sounds good."
  86. >You're not even sure what you're getting into, here.
  87. >With a bounce in her step she turns and walks into the center of her main room, where there is a couch with two books on the cushion.
  88. >You take a deep breath through your nose and follow.
  89. >Fluttershy hops up onto the couch and you sit down next to her.
  90. >She grabs one book, leaving you with the Daring Do title. You set it in your lap and try to assure yourself that this is just two friends hanging out.
  91. >Both of you sit there in silence reading for what feels like hours.
  92. >It's not a comfortable silence, either. You want to say something, but can't think of anything to talk about. Judging by Fluttershy fidgeting around and sighing every once in a while you figure that she's in much the same state.
  93. >You're about thirty pages in, and you're barely able to concentrate enough to realize that Daring barely escaped a trap set by her archnemesis.
  94. >Finally, Fluttershy clears her throat, garnering your attention. "Anon, can I... ask you something?"
  95. >You set your thumb on the page you're on and turn to her.
  96. "Hm? What's up?"
  97. >She falls silent for a moment and looks away. She stares at the wall across from the both of you.
  98. >No... more like stares past it.
  99. >You can tell by the look on her face that she's in deep thought about something.
  100. >This is the third red flag, and you're pretty sure you know where this is headed.
  101. >She turns back to you, and without a single stutter or muttered word, asks, "Why haven't you been coming to see me as often lately?"
  102. >This is the question you've been dreading.
  103. >For the past month you've been afraid of answering this.
  104. >Just like the scenario you played countless times in your head, you open your mouth to say something, but you can't find the words.
  105. >Seeing that you're not responding, her face falls and her confidence deflates, "Oh... I don't mean to pry, of course. I'm sorry if I sounded rude, it's just..."
  106. "No... no it's okay."
  107. >You'll have to swallow your fears for this.
  108. "You have a right to know."
  109. >It's going to take every ounce of willpower you have for this.
  110. "I was... afraid."
  111. >Fluttershy's eyes widen, "I'm so sorry, I didn't realize that I was scaring you. Was it because of how strict I've been with Angel Bunny?"
  112. >You can't help but laugh at that.
  113. "No, no Flutters."
  114. >She smiles whenever you say her little nickname, and this time is no different. "Then... what is it?"
  115. "Okay, I'm gonna be straight with you."
  116. >You shift on the couch and turn your position towards her.
  117. "I was afraid... that this would become more than friendship."
  118. >If the silence during the reading had been awkward, this is a whole different level.
  119. >Fluttershy's face turns red, and she let's out what can best be described as a little squeak of embarrassment. She takes a few deep breaths, trying to recover herself, "Wh... why would you um... be afraid of that?"
  120. >You gesture to yourself.
  121. "Well, I mean, look at me. We're not the same species Fluttershy."
  122. >Fluttershy frowns, and looks down at the floor, "It's..."
  123. "What?"
  124. >"It's alright, Anon. Unless... you don't want to, that is. I remember you telling me about horses, and... and the other animals. Isn't it different, though?"
  125. "I don't know if I'm comfortable with that, Fluttershy."
  126. >"Oh..."
  127. >Her face falls, and she looks at the ground with a frown.
  128. "I'm sorry."
  129. >"You don't have to apologize," she says, giving you a soft smile. "I understand it doesn't feel right for you."
  130. >You sigh and pinch the bridge of your nose.
  131. >You would really like to have a beer or two right about now. Maybe a cigarette, something to relieve this stress.
  132. >Fuck it.
  133. "Listen... Flutters."
  134. >This is going to be hard.
  135. "The main reason I was afraid was because I was already... getting close to you."
  136. >"Oh." Her blush deepens, and she covers her face with her hooves.
  137. "When I realized it was happening I tried to back off, and I guess you didn't like that. I'm sorry if I hurt you."
  138. >"It's alright, Anon."
  139. "No, no it's not. You're not an animal, Flutters. I just... it's hard to accept something like that."
  140. >"You don't have to force yourself."
  141. "I wasn't forcing myself, that's the whole issue. Listen, if you're willing to give this a shot I can't just up and say no."
  142. >Her eyes lock with yours, "What are you..."
  143. "I mean that I could try. It's not like it'd kill me."
  144. >In the time you've known Fluttershy you've come to expect certain behaviors from her.
  145. >Among these behaviors, wrapping her forehooves around you and kissing you had not been included.
  146. >It's not as weird as you presumed it would be.
  147. >She pulls away, her blush returns, and she starts stuttering, "Oh... I'm sorry... I didn't... It's... I..."
  148. "Flutters, Flutters."
  149. >You grab her hooves and smile.
  150. "It's okay."
  151. >"Oh."
  152. >She looks down, letting her hair fall over her eye.
  153. >She looks really cute whenever she does that.
  154. >Sitting here with Fluttershy, you can't help but wonder what you've just gotten yourself into.
