- Peace Protest/March to Oppose Obama War Speech
- 6 PM, Tuesday, September 10 (shortly before Obama TV address)
- Tribune Tower, 435 N. Michigan Ave
- Chicagoans To Answer Obama War Speech: Listen to Americans – Don’t Bomb Syria
- Activists to counter pro-bombing spin from "experts", war hawks with demand that Congress follow Americans’ wishes by voting against war.
- To counter the Obama administration's media blitz advocating the bombing of Syria, peace activists will give voice to the overwhelming majority of Americans who oppose U.S. military intervention with an action shortly before President Obama's Tuesday night national address. The action will begin at 6 PM, Tuesday, September 10 at the Tribune Tower, followed by a march to – and creative actions at – a number of downtown media outlets.
- Peace activists note that politicians and commentators who’ve historically offered deeply flawed “analysis” about Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya remain regular sources in press venues, while pro-peace policy experts are rarely positioned to balance the pro-war claims of the Obama administration and war hawks.
- Polls show an unprecedented number of Americans oppose a U.S. attack on Syria compared to previous wars, along with widespread skepticism of government claims in the wake of false evidence used to justify previous wars. Peace activists hope to use Tuesday’s protest to balance another round of spin and distortions from pro-war advocates on national television Tuesday night.
- And activists plan to use creative action to urge Obama, who ran as an opponent of senseless war, to live up to his promise, and to urge Congress to actually represent voters – who’ve been bombarding elected officials with anti-war messages -- by voting against this war.
- Tuesday’s action is sponsored by CAMI-Committee Against the Militarization of Youth/Comite anti-militarizacion, the Gay Liberation Network, La Voz de Los de Abajo, Neighbors for Peace, Northwest Indiana Veterans for Peace, The Anti-War Committee, and World Can't Wait Chicago (list in formation).
