  1. "HUFFLEPUFF!"
  2. Jane Knew it in her heart of hearts that she would be a Hufflepuff, she valued all the traits that made the house great. kindness and loyalty. But hearing the words from the sorting hat nevertheless made her sigh in relief.
  3. She walked to the hufflepuff table and sat down on a free chair. She got a warm welcome from her new housemates and she couldn't help but to smile radiantly.
  4. After the applause died down a bit she turned to look at the rest of the sorting, there were only a few students left and when the last boy sat on the chair the sorting hat went quiet for a while. The pause caused people to start whispering for a while and Jane heard some older Hufflepuff say something about a hatstall or something.
  5. After a while the hat finally shouted Slytherin, and the boy left the hat to join the others in the snake house of silver and green. Jane turned back and listened the older student explain that she'd never seen the hat be that indecisive during a sorting.
  6. She stopped her explanation of what a 'hatstall' was when Dumbledore started his speech.
  7. Jane listened to Dumbledore explain some of the rules to the first year students, like how the forest was forbidden for a reason and to avoid the giant willow that attacked people who got too close to it.
  8. After the speech the plates arranged on the tables magically filled up with food and the students at the hufflepuff table started talking again.
  9. "So, you're Jane... I forgot your last name already, sorry." A smiling girl next to Jane said, while filling her plate with mashed potatoes.
  10. "Jane Court, nice to meet you."
  11. "My name is Ashley Honeywell, I will try to remember your name from now on." The girl smiled. "It's part of my duty as a prefect."
  12. The girl displayed her badge with a P infront of the Hufflepuff crest proudly.
  13. "Oh, what do the prefects do then?" Jane asked while pouring gravy on her mashed potatoes.
  14. "Well, our duty is to help all the students in the school, we assist the faculty and the head boy and girl with different tasks aswell. For example, it is up to us to take you first year students to your dorms and make sure you don't get lost."
  15. "That sounds important."
  16. "Oh, it is..." Ashley said while watching Jane eat, while neglecting her own food. "It's a shame not all prefects take their duties seriously..."
  17. Jane was about to ask what Ashley meant when she heard another first year student scream as a ghost floated near them.
  18. "There's no need to be scared." Ashley assured Jane while starting on her dinner. "That's just the fat friar, The house ghost of Hufflepuff. He's kind and helpful, like all hufflepuffs should."
  19. Jane relaxed a bit, she had never seen a ghost before, she knew Hogwarts had a few of them, but they were pretty rare otherwise. She turned back to her dinner and enjoyed the food, she had heard descriptions from her grandmother over how the kitchens in the Hogwarts worked, but seeing it with her own eyes was different.
  20. After a while the food on the table vanished and were replaced by different wonderful looking dessers, Jane was excited to see all the different choices and decided to sample a little bit of everything.
  21. She was contently eating her dessert when she remembered what she was about to ask the Prefect.
  22. "Uhh, Ashley..?"
  23. "Yes, Jane?" The prefect asked with custard on her nose.
  24. Jane stiffled a giggle at the sight.
  25. "You mentioned that not all prefects take their duties seriously, what did you mean by that?"
  26. Ashley finished her custard pie and turned to look at Jane with a more serious face.
  27. "The other house's prefects are very unhelpful towards other houses, Slytherins are the most guilty of favouritism, but even gryffindor prefects rarely go out of their way to help the other houses. It's sad to see... "
  28. Ashley was quiet for a while but then smiled at Jane "but we Hufflepuffs are famed by our kindness and all the other houses know they can rely on us to help them."
  29. Jane smiled back and thought about how nice it was to be sorted in the friendliest house in the school.
  30. Jane was finishing her dessert when she started noticing older students leave the tables, leaving behind the first year students and the prefects. She also caught in the corner of her eye the Slytherin boy walk out of the great hall alone, and found it strange the first year student would leave the hall without being escorted to his common room.s
  31. Ashley told Jane she had to go see to her duties as a new prefect and stood up along with the other prefects of Hufflepuff.
  32. "Alright, first year students, your attention please. The prefects will now show you to your new common room, try to not get lost. And try to pay attention to where we're going, you need to memorize the way to your common room, so you won't get lost."
  33. Jane followed Ashley and looked in wonder about all the sights in the castle, she saw two other ghosts and was creeped slightly at one of them showing a party trick to his house's first years by nearly pulling his head off just outside the great hall.
  34. "Our common rooms is in the dungeons, it's called the Hufflepuff basement, and I know you all think dungeons are damp and uncomfortable, but be prepared to be amazed." Ashley explained excitedly to the first year students who followed her and the other prefects down deeper into the castle.
  35. Jane was a bit uncomfortable in the dungeons, but she noticed the slytherin boy skulk around the dungeons, being scolded by his prefect for leaving without the group and forcing one of them to look for him. The boy didn't look appologetic at all.
  36. "Oho, I see you got a troublemaker this year, Vincent." Ashley smiled at the slytherin prefect.
  37. "Just focus on your own house's useless first years, Honeywell..." The slytherin replied while glaring at the nervous hufflepuff first year students.
  38. One of the male hufflepuff prefects walked forward, but was stopped by Ahsley who just smiled and shook her head.
  39. The prefects ignored the rude slytherin and lead their first years to the most comfortable room imaginable, the hufflepuff basement was underground, but somehow there was natural light in the central room. All the furniture in the room looked wonderfully comfortable the room had no corners and there was a large fireplace with the yellow-and-black badger crest of Hufflepuff over it. The whole room had a yellow and black colourscheme and a friendly rounded look. There were a lot of shelves around the room with potted plants of all sorts.
  40. Jane looked around in wonderment at the different flora in the room, it really gave the room a natural look, and it was impressive how the moonlight lit the room, there were enchanted lanterns around that lit up the room aswell, but seeing natural light so far underground filled the first year students with awe.
  41. "This here is the common room, the most comfortable in the castle. As you can see, our very own head of the house, Professor Sprout, the herbology teacher has filled the room with different exotic plants that thrive here, thanks to the natural sunlight we get trough our magical windows."
  42. Jane listened to Ashley explain the rules of the house and was lead to her dormroom that had her trunk waiting for her. She felt the warm kindness of Ashley slightly contagious and was impressed at her sense of duty as a prefect. Even the other prefects seemed to show her respect for her taking things so seriously, while still being so courteous and friendly. Jane decided that night that she wanted to be a prefect too one day.
