  1. It was a quiet afternoon in the Dark World. Not that one could really notice since, well, there was no sun to tell day and night apart. Regardless, a certain prince of the dark was still careful to pay close attention to what hour it was. He looked at an old grandfather clock located in his bedroom. It read 16:03. He realized that he was falling behind schedule. Since the day he was born he had divided his day in a clearly defined routine which he would follow with the utmost precision and dedication. However, a week or so ago, due to an unexpected occurrence, he had to remake it from scratch. He was so used to the old one that he was having a hard time adapting, but he was sure that it wouldn’t take too long. And even if it took a lot of time, he was used to waiting.
  2.
  3. The prince navigated his dark corridors. He knew them like the back of his hand. After a lonely walk through his castle, he reached the balcony. There laid a small table, upon which were some books. Ralsei loved reading there. He could relax while the cold fresh wind caressed his skin and the sounds of nature from the forest below comforted him. He took a long breath, puffed some air and sat down to continue where he had left off.
  4.
  5. Ralsei about to finish his chapter, when something in the distance caught his eye: a white-blue speck was situated on the hill opposite to his castle. At first, he believed that it was just a trick of the light, but it bothered him so much so that he could not help, but to inspect it. Despite what one could infer, Ralsei actually had better eyesight than most people. He decided to wear glasses only because he had read they made him look more trustworthy and friendly. Immediately, he recognized Lancer, although he wasn’t sure what he was doing. He considered waving hi at him but was uncertain that he could even be seen by him.
  6.
  7. Ralsei resumed reading. Lancer’s figure distracted him a little, but he could put up with it. What he couldn’t put up with, was the thundering roar of a motorcycle. Ralsei looked again. Lancer was coming down the hill. His path left a trail of fire behind. Lancer gained more and more speed, until he hit a small ramp, sending him flying through the air. Ralsei squeaked a little, embracing for impact. But it never came. Lancer had made his calculations wrong. Instead of landing on the balcony, he crashed into the window of the floor below. Ralsei squeezed tight his fluffy hears, as the sound of the shattering glass reached him. He let out a long drawn out sigh.
  8.
  9. “Oh bother” he muttered to himself, before heading downstairs to meet his ‘guest’.
  10.
  11. He arrived and opened the door. A wheel rolled past him. When he looked back, he saw the mess that was now his bedroom. Several objects had fallen down onto the ground. Shards of glass were everywhere. And of course, Lancer was laying on top of the wreck of his bike looking dizzy from his landing.
  12.
  13. “Oh, hey Lancer, nice to see you,” Ralsei blurted out “if you wanted to see me you could have used the front door…”
  14.
  15. “Quiet, you sweet cinnamon roll, entering through the main door is for losers!”
  16.
  17. Lancer stuck his tongue out in a sign of mocking defiance.
  18.
  19. Ralsei ran his fingers through his face. He asked, “Why do you have a motorcycle, Lancer?”
  20.
  21. “Oh, it’s my dad’s. I don’t think he’ll be too happy that I broke it. But it doesn’t matter. I am the dad now! I can anything!”
  22.
  23. Ralsei bit his lip at that last phrase. It reminded him of a rather unpleasant encounter he had had with a jester.
  24.
  25. “Anyway, do you need anything? I can make some yummy cakes if you want!”
  26.
  27. “No thanks, I am full,” Lancer massaged his plump belly, “but I appreciate the thought, my faithful subject.”
  28.
  29. “Subject? what do you mean?”
  30.
  31. “Oh, right, I was almost forgetting” Lancer pointed his chubby finger at the prince of darkness “I am annexing your kingdom right now! You don’t stand a chance, nerd.”
  32.
  33. “W..What!?” Ralsei jumped back in surprise ”But why?”
  34.
  35. “Unfortunately, with my new powers come new responsibilities. I must care for the needs of my people, and my people demand that I expand my reign”
  36.
  37. “..Ok?…” Ralsei skeptically raised his eyebrow “and why do your people want that?”
  38.
  39. “Mmhh I don’t know. Isn’t this what kings are supposed to do? Anyway, I’ve got some conquering to get going. See you later, sugar cube”
  40.
  41. With that, Lancer made his way outside. While going past Ralsei accidentally hit him. Ralsei swirled around in circles until he fell down. He groaned and scratched his head, before trying to regain his balance. Once he was back on his feet, he readjusted his glasses and sighed. He cared for Lancer, so it hurt him to admit that at times he was a bit annoying. He was causing him to fall behind schedule. Right now he should downstairs, preparing some…
  42.
  43. Oh.
  44.
  45. Oh no.
  46.
  47. What previously was a slight sentiment of annoyance turned to dread. Ralsei usually had very good self-restraint, so it the fact that he was shaking made him even more worried.
  48.
  49. “Lancer shouldn’t be here,” he thought to himself, “I must convince him to get out immediately.”
  50.
  51. Ralsei sprinted in pursuit of his toddler friend. Finding him was easy, for Ralsei could hear his tiny footsteps through the immense walls of his dark castle. When he reached the kitchen, he saw Lancer admiring his tasty cakes.
  52.
  53. Ralsei spoke up “Lancer I’m sorry, I’ve just remembered that I have a very important business to attend to. We can meet another time, I promise.”
  54.
  55. With nonchalance, Lancer turned to his fluffy wizard friend “It’s no problem, you can go do your thing while I inspect by myself the surroundings.”
  56.
  57. Ralsei stepped forward “Look, I need to be alone. I don’t mean to sound rude, but you need to leave.”
  58.
  59. “I’m afraid you are in no position to send me away, you little peach. I’ve conquered your castle remember?”
  60.
  61. “Lancer…” Ralsei gritted his teeth. He was getting impatient.
  62.
  63. “– but I suppose that if you put a fight it will be more fun. Don’t you think?” Lancer grabbed a cake with a rich dark chocolate coating “FOOD FIGHT!”
  64.
  65. Before Ralsei could express any objection, the cake landed on his face. When he brushed off all of the chocolate cream, another landed on the same spot. Lancer was throwing all the food he could find at the table with various degrees of accuracy. Ralsei, raised his mantle to protect himself. He briefly considered casting a spell, but quickly discarded that idea as he did not intend to hurt him by mistake. After some minutes of intense warfare, a single cake with special frosting and sprinkles remained. Lancer was about to throw that too when he changed his mind.
  66.
  67. “I am keeping this one,” He grinned mockingly, “see you later!”
  68.
  69. Lancer rushed away. Ralsei went right behind him. Mid-chase he began feeling tired. He huffed and puffed and finally came to a halt. He took some moments to breathe, before resuming running. He had lost track of his tiny friend, but thankfully a trail of crumbs showed him the right path. It led to the library. Lancer was browsing through one of his book with his chocolate stained hand while holding what was left of the delicious baking good on the other.
  70.
  71. “Wow, this looks very interesting. Too bad I can’t read.” Lancer licked his fingers before turning page.
  72.
  73. Ralsei physically cringed. There was, however, a more pressing matter to attend to than telling Lancer to get his dirty hands off his books.
  74.
  75. “Lancer, stop! I told you, you must go! GET OUT!”
  76.
  77. Ralsei squeezed his mouth shut. He didn’t mean to yell. As a prince, he should know to contain himself.
  78.
  79. Lancer tossed the book aside “Alright, but only if you catch me!” and ran in between the many bookshelves.
  80.
  81. Once again, Ralsei went after him. Lancer turned left. Lancer turned right. Lancer made a U-turn. Lancer turned sideways. Lancer made a barrel roll. Both were lost into the great maze. They played cat and mouse for a while until finally, they caught a glimpse of the exit. Ralsei picked up his speed. He was on the verge of grabbing the tiny delinquent when a book that was hanging on the edge of one of the shelves fell down. It landed right onto his face and he tumbled down into the ground. By the time he threw it aside, Lancer had already gotten outside his vision. Ralsei had no time to lose. He got up on his feet and resumed the chase.
  82.
  83. “Where is he?” He thought to himself while worryingly pacing in a random direction.
  84.
  85. Soon he found his answer. Lancer was standing in front of a large door. Ralsei shivered. This was exactly the one spot he couldn’t afford to let him roam.
  86.
  87. “Lancer, No!” Ralsei moved forward. He, however, stepped on Lancer’s discarded cake and promptly slipped and fell face first into the ground. His nose hurt.
  88.
  89. Meanwhile, Lancer, not paying attention to the misfortunes of his beloved gote companion, went inside. A tight staircase went down and down. It was dark, even compared to the rest of the castle. If he wasn’t trained, he wouldn’t have been able to see anything. The walls were no longer smooth and polished, but rather made out of some kind of cobblestone. It felt uncomfortable, claustrophobic even. But that didn’t impede Lancer for going deeper and deeper into its depths.
  90.
  91. “This is so much cooler than my dungeon! Let’s see what’s at the bottom of this.” Lancer spoke out loud.
  92.
  93. He was beginning to think that it was an endless staircase when he finally met up with another smaller door. An unlit candle stood upright in a small cavity. Lancer decided to pick it up and light it with some of his magic.
  94.
  95. “Oh boy! I can’t imagine what’s in there” Lancer giggled before gently pushing the door.
  96.
  97. The excitement with which he went through the entrance is comparable in intensity only to the creeps he got when he saw what was on the other side. His knees felt weak. He wanted to cry.
  98.
  99. “Kk..kris? Is that you?”
  100.
  101. Lancer approached him. All his four limbs were chained to the walls. Slowly, he raised his gaze. He didn’t look malnourished, but there was something very ill about him. His eyes were those of a ghost.
  102.
  103. “Don’t worry, I’ll get you out of here!” cried Lancer.
  104.
  105. In vain he attempted to break the chains with his pathetic magic. After just a couple of tries, he was already exhausted. He didn’t give up hope though.
  106.
  107. “Stay where you are! I’ll go get Susie. She will know what to do, will she?”
  108.
  109. Kris gulped in distress. Lancer started sweating.
  110.
  111. “…will she…?”
  112.
  113. Kris looked at the ground. Lancer took a step backward. He wanted to ask Kris if the horrible implication that popped in his mind was true or not when he heard something behind him. Startled, he turned back. Ralsei was at the door.
  114.
  115. “So, you’ve discovered my secret.”
  116.
  117. Ralsei looked menacingly at Lancer. His glasses were broken. Nonchalantly, he picked them and tossed them away.
  118.
  119. “I swear, I didn’t mean it to end like this. It was all an accident. But I cannot let you go. I have waited so long to have a friend. I can’t lose Kris.”
  120.
  121. Ralsei was mutating. His became taller. His muzzle grew longer exposing plenty of sharp red teeth. Tentacles emerged from under his robe, each oozing with a strange black liquid. Lancer was crouched against the wall. In a desperate attempt to defend himself, he threw the candle at the horrid creature. Ralsei easily dodged. It landed outside on the stairs.
  122.
  123. “But you aren’t my friend, Lancer. So why don’t you stay in?”
  124.
  125. One of Ralsei’s tentacles reached the door and slowly closed it.
  126.
  127. The room was completely dark.
