43. Treasure hunter Nathan Drake embarks on a quest in search of the Atlantis of the Sands while battling an ancient, sinister organization.
 44. The Uncharted games are by far my favorite game series and I have played them many times through, because of this I was very much anticipating the release of Uncharted 3. Sadly, after a play through and a half, Uncharted 3 has not lived up to my expectations or the Uncharted series. Below are my reasons why I feel this. They are my personal opinions and I am not saying that all will hate this game, I am simply stating the facts as I see them. I also purchased the hard-copy walk through book. It is an amazing guide for this game and truly helped. One quick note is that the game gets much better as you play on. The first half is very slow, dull and boring. The second half is much more interesting and the levels and their design are great. Seems like they spent more time on the later levels than the beginning.

What they did Right:

+ Basically everything in Uncharted 2 has traveled over to Uncharted 3. The menus, options, trophies, statistics are all basically the same. Some of the bonuses are now downloadable content instead of being included in the game like usual. They just wanted more money out of it. + Great graphics which are a bit better than Uncharted 2. + There are no boss fights. This could be a good or bad thing depending on the player. I rather like not having a boss fight in the Uncharted games. God of War games, yes I want a boss. + Flashbacks, hallucinations, and blurred vision really made an interesting impression on the game play. Finding out a little of Drakes past boosted the story for a while. + Voice acting is fairly solid as usual, however the lack of jokes and little comedic relief was also a huge let down after Uncharted 2 did so well with that.

What they did Wrong:

Aiming is slightly off compared to the other Uncharted Games. - Story is lacking interest and depth. I lost track of what the mission even was due to just being bored. - To much gun play and hand to hand combat. I wanted more of an adventure game, not a shooter game. - The hand to hand combat gets really old very fast and it still not perfected. I just want to punch a guy out, not have to keep pushing the triangle or circle buttons. - Characters now have this annoying habit of touching walls when they are near them. Sort of like a balance thing if they are running or maneuvering though narrow areas. I find it distracting. - Treasures now lifelessly blink in a quick flash instead of the usual polished shine. I hate this new technique for making the treasures semi-visible. - There are to many cut scenes and times in the game which they disable your control or ability to run. Very distracting and takes you out of the game. I want complete control over the character at all times and much less cut scenes to interrupt the game play.

Over-all Uncharted 3, as well as the other Uncharted games are much better than any other game out there. The Uncharted series has perfectly combined action and adventure with breathtaking graphics and pristine control while still focusing on a story which keeps the player motivated. Most games lack most, if not all of these qualities which the Uncharted games have raised the bar in.

My idea as to why Uncharted 3 has not fulfilled what I expected it to is this; I feel like Uncharted 3 was rushed. They wanted this release by the end of this year due to preparations for Uncharted 4 as the main title release for Playstation 4 which is said to release holiday 2013. That is just an idea as to why UC3 seemed to be lacking in areas which the other games excelled in.

My 3 favorite parts of this game are most of the chase scenes, The cruise ship level (Cruisin' for a Brusin') is amazing, and the plane (The Stowaway) level where the plane falls apart and crashes in the desert. The cruise ship and the plane are amazing levels and truly impressed me in this otherwise dull game. Those scenes seem to have had the most time spent on them, as they were flawless. Unlike the rest of the game which I spent most of my time searching for treasure and figuring out what I need to do next.

Like my review title suggests, this game is very good in the sea of games. However it is by far the lesser of the 3 Uncharted games. The story, game play, control, combat, and exploration simply do not impress after such amazing titles like Uncharted 1 & 2. It is a great game, and I will probably play it again on crushing, however I will not come near to enjoying it as much as the other Uncharted games. Hopefully they take their time on Uncharted 4, which will be the first big title for the Playstation 4.

PSN Name: adrielaugust
 45. I was so excited for Uncharted 3 that I held off buying any games with it because I knew all my time would be invested in it. I loved the first two, and I was sure I would be loving this experience. I did, however, there are so many flaws with this one that I can't seem to wrap my head around it. Best game of the year? I don't know about that.

Okay, it started off pretty good. That battle in the bar was pretty intense. Then I started to notice that most battles are pretty much the same. You fight, tap the circle button when the enemy grabs you, push the triangle and you can hit back, and it's really the same fight over and over again, especially the brutes. There were also parts that felt like they dragged, like the searching for clues and puzzle segments. I ended up begging for the action. But then the action came and towards the end it was like the game can't go one minute without an ambush happening and it's really the same group of guys attacking (like the snipers, armored shotgun guys and sometimes someone with a bazooka). Also, get used to people lobbing grenades at you all the time (an Uncharted stable).

Then there's the story, or lack thereof. You get introduced to Nathan when he's a kid and I thought they were going to develop on this but there's only one scene in the beginning and that's it. I actually really enjoyed that and wouldn't mind maybe a spin-off of when Nathan was a kid because he was really interesting. I'm sure they can think up all kinds of adventures of Sully and Nathan in their younger years. I actually really enjoyed that but it was pretty much abrupt. Then we got the villains, and.... what was their motivations again? What is everyone after? I was left scratching my head at the end because it didn't make any sense of what they were trying to find. They show it, but it doesn't make sense and it's hardly explained.

Then there's the characters in game (some returning, some new) but they are very brief and they literally get pushed aside and disappear and no one ever speaks of them ever again. There's this Cutter guy that is new to this game, reminds me of Jason Statham, and at some point of the game I realized he was gone, and that was it. He had one purpose to serve in the game, and then he disappears. We also have Chloe returning to the series, and she doesn't serve much of a purpose at all only to appease the fans. Elena also returns and the storyline between her and Drake is rather disappointing considering how everything ends in the last game. They better not repeat this for the fourth.

But after all that criticism, I still liked the game. The graphics and environments are phenomenal, and the action that is present in the game is very good and even made me laugh at some points. And as monotonous as some of the action gets, there were some good moments. My favorite was when I was swimming in the water and there's this guard above, and I hit the action button to make Drake punch him in the balls, punch his face and he falls in the water.

Overall, it was an enjoyable experience, but they need to work on storytelling and character development more on the next one. The voice acting is still very good, but it didn't feel as strong as the last one. Even Nolan North as Nathan Drake felt a little tired this time, and not that sparkling personality we come to know and love from the last two games. I really hope they learn from this and try harder for the next one, and that's something I hate saying because they got just about everything right in the last installment.

 47. The UK (London), Colombia (Cartagena), France, Syria, Yemen and Saudi Arabia Drake claimed that it required months to sail through the East Indies during his famous circumnavigation, when it should have needed no more than a few weeks. Records of his voyage were declared classified by Elizabeth on his return to England. Official documents were falsified, and the surviving sailors compelled on pain of death to stay their tongues, to prevent sensitive informtion from falling into the hands of the rival Spanish.

Some believe that the discrepancy occurred because Drake actually attempted to find and navigate the Northwest Passage, the Arctic Ocean sea route linking the Atlantic and Pacific. Drake's Deception, however, implies that Sir Francis Drake was charged by Elizabeth and her advisors to make a stop in Arabia to find Iram of the Pillars, a lost city. They hoped that he might at least return with plunder and, if legends were true, a source of great power. On reaching a temple in Yemen, though, the explorer was deeply alarmed by the warnings he found there; abandoning his search, he lied to Elizabeth on his return to England. This event is the origin of Uncharted 3's subtitle. Marlowe is the head of a secret society that dates back to Elizabethan England. Sir Francis Walsingham, Principle Secretary to Queen Elizabeth, was a pioneer of modern espionage techniques; it was he who created the spy network of remarkable reach and sophistication. Among his many innovations, he is believed to have recruited agents to operate in numerous foreign courts to gather intelligence and distribute misinformation. There is a famous portrait that shows the monarch wearing a dress where, if you look closely, you can see that it is covered with symbols of eyes and ears; a far from subtle warning to those who might conspire against the Crown's interest.

This spy network is the basis of Marlowe's order, with Walsingham, John Dee and even Elizabeth herself among its founding members. It has operated in secret throughout history, manipulating individuals and world events through the use of deception, drugs and "magic". In its post-Elizabethan form, it should not be regarded as an explicitly political organisation; think of it more as a secret cult with clandestine motivations, in the style of the Illuminati. Marlowe harboured an ambition to restore the organisation's power and, in a dream passed down through 400 years, sought to exploit the secret of the Atlantis of the Sands...an aspiration long frustrated by Nate's theft of Sir Francis Drake's ring in Cartagena Whether affection or biological fact, there is no doubt that Nate is insistent on the authenticity of his lineage...no matter how cynical others may be. We see the truth behind his explanation of how he came to possess his ring in Drake's Fortune - "I kind of inherited it," he told Elena, obliquely admitting to the theft - in the Cartagena flashback early in Drake's Deception.

No matter his precise heritage, there is at very least a thematic relationship between Nate and Sir Francis. They can each be said to have lived in accordance with Drake's motto of sic parvis magna, "greatness from small beginnings". Both are remarkable men of action who are as moths to the flames of noteworthy experiences and wondrous sights, despite their humble origins: Nate as an orphan, Sir Francis Drake as a commoner eventually knighted by his Queen. In Uncharted 4: A Thieve's End, it is revealed that Nathan and his brother Sam changed their identities and adopted the last name of Drake. Because their mother was a brilliant historian who researched Sir Francis. Known under many names throughout history - Ubar, the City of Brass, Iram of the Pillars - the "Atlantis of the Sands" is a mythical lost city located in the Rub' al Khali desert. It was constructed over an underground spring that made it a miraculous, verdant settlement in the middle of a desiccated wasteland. Salim tells Nate that the city became a "place of evil" when Solomon imprisoned malevolent Djinn ("genies" of supernatural origin and made of pure fire) inside a brass vessel and cast it into the aquifer that fed the oasis.

We clearly see Marlowe's cultists attempting to retrieve a vessel from beneath the waters of Iram. Whether this vessel actually contains legendary Djinn or a natural psychotropic substance is left to the player's interpretation. Thirsty and exhaused on arrival at the Atlantis of the Sands, Nate drinks the city's water and is - to paraphrase Chloe's appraisal of Cutter's state earlier in the adventure - "tripping balls" when he fights the fiery creatures. This was almost certainly inspired by his earlier conversation with Salim. In his highly suggestible state, Nate interprets his opponents as being Djinn, or at least an approximation conjured up by his addled mind.

As an orphan, abandoned at the tender age of five, Nate's foremost fear is to be left alone...which, almost paradoxically, has made it almost impossible for him to form lasting relationships. Being his mentor, closest friend and essentially a surrogate father, Sully's death is the most traumatic event Nate can imagine. Though Marlowe argues earlier in the story that Sully perceived the young Nate as an opportunity, a "long con" of greater value than the commission she offered, Nate's most cruel hallucination shows that he sees no abiding truth in her unsentimental appraisal. They actually got married after the events of Among Thieves. The revelation is perhaps a little subtle, but it's there: when Nate says "You're still wearing it," (referring to her ring), Elena's blunt response to Nate's observation ("It helps in this part of the world. Seriously, don't flatter yourself.") makes it clear that it is a wedding band, which she uses to deter aspirant suitors.

Though wealth eludes him at the conclusion of Drake's Fortune and Among Thieves, Nate on both occasions gains a treasure of great value in Elena...and, on both occasions, he blows it, walking out when his phobia of commitment drives the couple apart. Elena perhaps best understands Nate's existential fear: he's afraid of admitting who he really is, and almost obsessively takes refuge in an identity that doesn't truly belong to him.

The motto on Drake's ring has defined Nate's entire life; there's a sense that he has always walked backwards into his future, defined by his troubled childhood. In the closing cinematics, however, his reaction to his wedding band when Sully produces it - so much like the one belonging to Sir Francis, but lacking the motto; a blank slate - perhaps suggests that it might finally be "Nate", not "Drake", who accompanies his closest friend and wife to the plane before the closing credits roll. In one level of the game, Nate manages to climb aboard a cargo plane heading out into the desert. However, he is soon discovered by a guard on board who attempts to throw him out the back of the plane. Nate manages to defeat the guard by releasing the chute of a container, sending the guard and the planes cargo out the back. This causes the plane to lose control and catch fire as a result of the ensuing gunfight. Nate and all the people on board are sucked out into the sky as the plane plummets to the ground. Luckily, Nate manages to manoeuvre himself to a crate with an attached parachute midair. He pulls the cord and floats safely down into the desert. a5c7b9f00b
