  1. >You are Octavia Melody
  2. >Personal maid of Empress Nightmare Moon
  3. >…
  4. >You are making your way to the Royal Chambers to deliver the Empress her usual evening cup of coffee.
  5. >A cold sweat finds it’s way onto your forehead as you think about what you are about to attempt.
  6. >As you arrive the at Empress’ chamber, the doors automatically open; inviting you in.
  7. >Quickly, you make your way to her sitting room, where you find the Empress reading one of her many ancient books.
  8. >Noticing your presence, she looks up from her book, and motions toward the small table beside her.
  9. >”You may place our drink there, and take your leave.”
  10. >You swallow, and do as instructed.
  11. >Placing the cup on the table, you retreat a few steps, and bow.
  12. >Your mind races as you reconsider your question.
  13. >Should you ask?
  14. >Will she punish you?
  15. >…
  16. “E-Empess?”
  17. >She looks at you again.
  18. >”Yes maid? Is there a problem?”
  19. >You shake your head.
  20. “N-No. There’s no problem…”
  21. >”Then you may leave, your duties are done.”
  22. >You swallow.
  23. “We- we would like to ask you a question…”
  24. ---------------
  25. >There is a pause in the air, before Nightmare Moon gently closes her book.
  26. >”What troubles you now maid?”
  27. >You notice just how dry your throat feels.
  28. >Her icy, deep eyes offer no trace of comfort.
  29. >Yet, you speak.
  30. “We… we could like to ask if- if we could see our daughter…”
  31. >As the words leave your mouth, you feel a crippling amount of dread come crashing onto your shoulders.
  32. >The last time you asked this question was thirteen months ago.
  33. >The last time you saw your foal was sixteen months months ago.
  34. “Please… it’s her fifth birthday tommorrow… I- I would just like to see her. That’s all. I won’t even talk if you don’t-
  35. >”You know that We’ve told you not to ask this question before…”
  36. >You panic, knowing the mistake you’ve just made.
  37. >Her tone isn’t particularly angry, or even very emotional.
  38. >It’s cold.
  39. >That’s what scares you the most.
  40. “I know Empress… I tried to wait but- but she’s my foal! I- I missing her grow up! I-“
  41. >You force your mouth shut, before you say something you’ll regret.
  42. >Instead, you take a moment to compose yourself.
  43. “I- I’ve been a good, loyal maid Empress. I know my place, and I’ve serve you and Sire Anonymous faithfully… please…”
  44. >”You’ve done your duty; nothing more. Do you think you should be rewarded for doing only what it asked of you?”
  45. “No! That’s not it at all! I-… I…”
  46. >You realize only now that you have nothing true argument.
  47. “I just miss my daughter… she means everything to me… please…”
  48. ---------------
  49. >You feel the Empress familiar mane brush your cheek.
  50. >”We suppose that, on the eve of her birth celebration, we shall permit you to see her…”
  51. >You feel an immense weight lift off of your whiters.
  52. “Thank you Empress! Thank you so much! You don’t understand how-“
  53. >Seemingly unconcerned with your excitement, she speaks.
  54. >”She will be returning from schooling soon. You may wait here for her arrival.”
  55. >You feel tears crest your eyes.
  56. >Sixteen months.
  57. >She’ll be five years old tomorrow.
  58. >…
  59. >She’ll be getting her cutie mark soon.
  60. >Your heart races at the idea.
  61. >What will her special talent be?
  62. >You wonder if she will-
  63. >”Auntie Moon!”
  64. >Instantly, you turn toward the voice.
  65. >”Auntie Moon! I’m back!”
  66. >Your daughter.
  67. >Midnight Melancholy.
  68. >…
  69. >She’s just as beautiful as you remember.
  70. >Her mane and coat are similar colors to yours, although slightly darker.
  71. >Her eyes are a beautiful, deep blue.
  72. >…
  73. >Before you can even react, the filly gallops past you, and toward the Empress.
  74. >In turn, Nightmare Moon smiles, and lifts the filly into her mane.
  75. >Melancholy breaks out into a fit of laughter.
  76. >”Put me down auntie! It tickles! haha! Stop!”
  77. >In a bizarrely playful tone, Nightmare Moon replies.
  78. >”We told you not to run little one! We must punish you severely!”
  79. >Melancholy’s giggling only increases, unable to resist Nightmare Moon’s mane.
  80. >”S-stop! haha! Stop I sorry! stop!!! haha!”
  81. >It’s a strange scene before you.
  82. >The all powerful Nightmare Moon, gently playing with a foal.
  83. >Had you not seen it with your own eyes, you wouldn’t have believed it.
  84. >A few moments pass, before Nightmare Moon stops her assault, and places the filly across her front legs.
  85. ---------------
  86. >”What did you do today in school little one?”
  87. >She smiles, her tone ever up-beat and cheerful.
  88. >”We did math! Mr. Theory even gave me a blue ribbon!”
  89. >Nightmare Moon smiles, and nuzzles the your foal.
  90. >”That’s my Melancholy. I knew you would pass those exams…”
  91. >Melancholy returns her embrace for a moment, before Nightmare Moon raises her head.
  92. >”Melancholy?”
  93. >Your foal looks up.
  94. >”Yes auntie?”
  95. >Nightmare Moon uses her mane to point toward you.
  96. >”Do you know who that is?”
  97. >Your heart races, and you can’t help but break into a smile.
  98. >Your foal turns to face you, with a confusion on her face.
  99. >Tears are now all too apparent in your eyes, as they escape your cheek.
  100. >Melancholy raises her eyebrow, clearly in thought.
  101. >”She looks familiar…”
  102. >Than, she gets it.
  103. >”It’s Ms. Octavia! Octavia Melody!”
  104. >You nod, and smile wide.
  105. “That’s right…”
  106. >While it hurts not to hear “mom” leave her mouth, you know now rare these encounters are.
  107. >Being able to see her at all is a gift.
  108. >”Why don’t you go say hello Melancholy, don’t be rude to Ms. Octavia.”
  109. >Nodding, the filly jumps from Nightmare Moon’s hooves, and come over toward you.
  110. >You both nuzzle each other for a moment.
  111. >It seems like all of eternity.
  112. ---------------
  113. >Then, it ends.
  114. >”Now why don’t you go get washed up for bedtime? We’ll come tuck you in when you’re done.”
  115. >Melancholy breaks the nuzzle.
  116. >”I’m sorry Ms. Octavia, but Auntie says I need to get ready for bed time…”
  117. >You nod, clears in your eyes.
  118. “It’s ok, you’re a- you’re a growing filly. You need your sleep.”
  119. >She nods.
  120. >”Goodnight Ms. Octavia!”
  121. >You open your mouth to reply, but before you can, she turns, and nuzzles Nightmare Moon.
  122. >”Goodnight Auntie!”
  123. >She turns the nuzzle.
  124. >’Goodnight little one, now hurry, and we might even read you a bedtime story…”
  125. >The filly’s ears perk up at the word “story,” and almost instantly, she gallops from the room, toward some other section of the apartments.
  126. >…
  127. >There is a moment of silence.
  128. >A cold, lonely feeling begins to sink in.
  129. >…
  130. >That might be the last time you see your foal for more than a year.
  131. >...
  132. >She… she might have her cutie mark next time you see her.
  133. >…
  134. >”Was that satisfactory Octavia?”
  135. >You nod, and wipe your eyes.
  136. >”Ye-yes Empress… thank you…”
  137. >She nods.
  138. >”In truth Octavia, we know this time is difficult for you.”
  139. >”We trust you understand that we are much more capable of providing for her than you ever could.”
  140. >You nod.
  141. “I… I know Empress… I- thank you… so much for doing this for her…”
  142. ---------------
  143. >The words pain you as the leave your mouth.
  144. >In some small part, because they are true.
  145. >Nightmare Moon as the resources of an entire Empire at her disposal.
  146. >The best tutors.
  147. >The best opportunities to explore her talent.
  148. >The best… everything.
  149. >She can provide Melancholy so much more than you ever could…
  150. >”She will be earning her mark soon. You know that, correct?”
  151. >You nod.
  152. ”I know…”
  153. >”We suppose that, as the time nears, we should allow the filly to know more about her lineage.”
  154. >Your ears stand up.
  155. “You mean-“
  156. >”Yes Octavia, we feel the time is nearing where she may learn you are her mother…”
  157. >The tears return.
  158. ”Thank you Empress… thank you so much… you don’t know what this means to me...”
  159. >She brushes your mane with her own.
  160. >”We are glad to see you are pleased…”
  161. >Just as quickly, her mane retracts.
  162. >”Although you would do well to remember that, if you displease us, we might be forced to reconsider.”
  163. >You nod heavily, her reminder being all to clear.
  164. ”I understand- I-I’ll do my best Empress; I promise.”
  165. >She looks at you, before nodding, and re-openig her book.
  166. >”Than you are dismissed. You may return to your chambers for the evening.”
  167. >You stand, and bow slightly, before turning to exist the room.
  168. >...
  169. >As the doors of the Royal Apartments close behind you, for some odd reason, you turn around.
  170. >You never got to say goodnight to her, did you?
  171. >You take a deep breathe, before speaking in an almost inaudible voice.
  172. “Good Night…”
  173. >”My Melancholy…”
  174. >Satisfied, you turn around, and make your way down the hall.
