- p. 36 - What do you know about the Titanic?
- part 1 - Read the article and match the questions (a-e) with the paragraphs (1-3) that answer them.
- 1 b
- 2 a
- 3 d
- come about = happen
- part 2 - Find the answers to these questions in the article.
- 1 His mission was to find US nuclear submarines that had disappeared in the 1960s.
- 2 At first they jumped for joy, and then they felt solemn.
- 3 He felt disappointed by how people had treated Titanic.
- ---
- Why do we use past perfect in sentences 1 and 3?
- 1 - His mission was in 1985. The submarines disappeared in the 1960s.
- -> The disappearance happened in the past before another past time, so we use past perfect.
- 3 - He felt disappointed in 2004. People treated Titanic like a freak show between 1985 and 2004.
- -> We focus on a past time (2004) and talk about things that happened before that, so past perfect.
- One of the most common uses of past perfect is to tell “stories” like this. We’re focused on events in the past, and want to tell about events that happened earlier.

- When Greg arrived, class started. (First Greg arrived, then class started.)
- When Nazlican arrived, class had already started. (First class started, then she arrived.)
- When Fernanda arrived, class was starting. (She arrived in the middle of getting started with class.)

- p. 37 part 5 - which events happened first?
- 1 He went to the Titanic nineteen years later to see how it had changed.
- 2 Then we realized we were celebrating at a place where people had died.
- 3 Nearby I saw a pair of smaller shoes that had perhaps belonged to a child.
- ---

- 1 had been (“at sea” = traveling in the water)
- 2 sank
- 3 was (“be too late” was still true at the time the alarm sounded)
- 4 had disappeared
- 5 hadn’t located
- 6 had visited
- By the time he got to the hospital, he had died. (“die” happened before “get to the hospital”)
- By the time he got to the hospital, he was dead. (“be dead” was true at the same time as “get to the hospital”)
- ---
- morbid = related to death or disease or other “dark” topics
- ---
- Ask yes/no questions to try to figure out the explanations for the situations on your paper. (These are called lateral thinking puzzles, because you have to think “sideways” to figure them out.)
- Clue: All of the answers have something to do with water. (This is helpful for 2 and 3.)
- ---
- BREAK
- ---
- Finish the lateral thinking puzzles.
- ---
- p. 37 part 9 - complete the paragraph with the simple past or past perfect
