- Ellis Parsons: A Normal Life - Issue #5
- FADE IN:
- CAIT (O.S.)
- No, watch where you're putting your
- hand... Not there Ellis! There! Oh
- yeah, there.
- INT. CAIT'S CAR - DAY
- Ellis gets the bluetooth setup and looks at his phone.
- ELLIS
- This button?
- CAIT
- Yeah, genius!
- Ellis opens up Spotify.
- ELLIS
- Tell me if you know this one.
- CAIT
- Try me.
- The radio plays The Supremes - You Can't Hurry Love.
- ELLIS
- Come on don't tell me you don't
- know this.
- Cait puts up one finger.
- ELLIS (CONT'D)
- I need love, love to ease my mind!
- I need to find, find, someone to
- call my mine- But mama said-
- CAIT
- You can't hurry love!
- ELLIS
- ...No, you'll just have to wait!
- The two carry ecstatic looks.
- CAIT
- She said love don't come
- easy!
- ELLIS (CONT'D)
- She said love don't come
- easy!
- Ellis points to her.
- CAIT (CONT'D)
- It's a game of give and take, you
- can't hurry love!
- Cait puts her hand out to Ellis.
- CAIT (CONT'D)
- You gotta trust good times!
- ELLIS
- No, you'll-
- The two start to laugh as the song continues to play. They
- pass by a street fair.
- CAIT (CONT'D)
- Holy shit, I haven't been to this
- place in a long time, Ellis! You
- want to step out?
- ELLIS
- Yeah, why not? Come on, let's go.
- EXT. PARKING LOT - DAY
- Across the street from the fair, the two pull into a parking
- lot.
- INT. CAIT'S CAR - DAY
- The two hold hands and look into each other's eyes.
- ELLIS
- Uh...
- CAIT
- Yeah?
- ELLIS
- You're really cute. I never
- actually bothered to compliment you
- on it.
- CAIT
- Well you did admit to wanting to
- fuck me.
- ELLIS
- And...
- Ellis takes a moment to choose his words.
- ELLIS (CONT'D)
- That went well, right?
- CAIT
- Yes, Ellis. That went well.
- ELLIS
- So, can I make out with you?
- CAIT
- Yes, jesus christ. Where are you
- from that makes you so damn nervous
- making the first move?
- ELLIS
- California. I don't know if you
- come with a consent form either.
- CAIT
- That explains a lot.
- ELLIS
- Next to the autism diagnosis, yeah.
- CAIT
- Bullshit.
- The two step out of the car.
- EXT. STREET FAIR - DAY
- The two cross the street and head to the street.
- CAIT
- You are not autistic Ellis.
- ELLIS
- Oh I sure as hell am.
- CAIT
- Prove it.
- ELLIS
- What, you don't notice? The extreme
- focus on things, the social
- awkwardness, and struggles to fit
- in with other people?
- CAIT
- Come on, you talk to people great.
- ELLIS
- Uh-huh.
- The two pause.
- CAIT
- Alright, fine. Maybe you're a
- little awkward, but that doesn't
- mean anything.
- The two walk through the market.
- ELLIS
- It means a lot. Doesn't define me,
- but it means a significant amount.
- You want anything to eat or drink?
- CAIT
- No, yourself? I'll buy.
- ELLIS
- Ah, fuck you. I ain't that poor.
- CAIT
- I'm paying Ellis.
- ELLIS
- We'll settle that one when we can.
- Cait walks over to some rubber ducks.
- CAIT
- I got so many of these in tub.
- ELLIS
- No shit?
- CAIT
- Yeah!
- ELLIS
- Why's that?
- Cait shrugs.
- CAIT
- I just always thought they were
- comfy. Being a kid was a different
- deal, you know?
- Ellis's expression goes blank.
- ELLIS
- Yeah. It was.
- CAIT
- Ellis?
- Ellis shakes his head.
- ELLIS
- Yeah. I'm good.
- CAIT
- You alright?
- Ellis shoots her a grin.
- ELLIS
- Don't worry about it. Flashbacks to
- when I did gay shit.
- CAIT
- Hey, at least you didn't deal with
- it for four years.
- ELLIS
- Yeah, one night of it and I'm
- genuinely surprised you didn't blow
- your brains out.
- CAIT
- Hey.
- (laughs)
- Easy, Ellis. Same goes for you.
- How'd you manage to be friends with
- him for that long?
- The two hold hands and walk back to Cait's car.
- ELLIS
- It seemed like a good idea at the
- time.
- CAIT
- Yeah, I know what that's like.
- The two get into
- CAIT'S CAR
- They sit there and hold hands.
- CAIT
- You want to grab some food next?
- ELLIS
- Yeah, sure.
- They drive through Payson.
- ELLIS (CONT'D)
- So, what was he like to you?
- CAIT
- Who, Ronnie?
- ELLIS
- Yeah, Ronnie.
- CAIT
- He was a fucking dick. There was
- this one time where he fucking
- slapped me and said, "I could beat
- you in front of Ellis and he'd be
- too scared to do shit!"
- Ellis laughs.
- ELLIS
- HAHAHAHA... Hoo man, he actually
- believed that I wouldn't have done
- shit?
- CAIT
- Pretty much. The thing is, about
- that. I told him off after. I said,
- "I'll call Ellis then, see what he
- says."
- ELLIS
- Jesus fuck, Cait. What did he say?
- Cait grins.
- CAIT
- He got nervous and said, "I'd
- rather not, Ellis is fucking
- crazy." Didn't bring it up or slap
- me around again.
- Ellis smiles at that. Cait parks the car and holds Ellis's
- hand.
- The two smile and get out.
- INT. MEXICAN RESTAURANT - DAY
- The two sit there and eat their food.
- CAIT
- Now, Ellis. Please don't act
- autistic here.
- ELLIS
- What, you worried I can't fight
- back against a lynch mob or some
- shit?
- CAIT
- No, Ellis. It's a small town.
- People talk.
- Ellis shrugs.
- ELLIS
- Aaand?
- CAIT
- I'd rather not deal with that.
- ELLIS
- Alright, fair. But you know I can
- be generally civilized, it's just
- that Ronnie was a fucking dick to
- me. Of course I'm going to be
- depressed out of my god damn mind,
- he's gotta constantly inflate his
- god damn ego, he's gotta constantly
- play the dick measuring contest
- game, he's gotta constantly act
- like he's better than me at
- everything. He's gotta act like
- just because he plays fucking
- League that he's better than
- everyone else because he's "better
- at games than them".
- Ellis shuts his mouth. Cait looks at this, wide eyed.
- ELLIS (CONT'D)
- I'm sorry. I shouldn't have gone
- off like that, this is our date. Oh
- god, I'm sorry.
- CAIT
- Jesus christ Ellis, how long were
- you keeping that in?
- Ellis sighs.
- ELLIS
- Longer than I'd like to admit. Can
- I admit another thing?
- CAIT
- Yeah?
- ELLIS
- Sometimes I wish I had a range
- accident around that retard.
- CAIT
- Jesus, Ellis. I wouldn't fault you
- if you did. How bad was he?
- EXT. SHOOTING RANGE - DAY
- Ellis holds a 1911. His hair is longer.
- RONNIE
- You know, Ellis unlike you I can
- actually shoot.
- Ellis winces. His shots go low left and the red in his face
- begins to show.
- ELLIS (V.O.)
- I always kept myself from getting
- angry around him.
- CAIT (V.O.)
- Wouldn't knock it if you did lose
- your fucking mind him, jesus
- christ.
- ELLIS (V.O.)
- I did at one point.
- INT. RESTAURANT - DAY
- Ellis takes a sip from his coke.
- ELLIS
- He was blaming me for why you broke
- up with him. He said that it was
- "my negativity that caused it" then
- shut me out of his life.
- Ellis looks down.
- ELLIS (CONT'D)
- You know I bought him a fucking
- rice cooker? I beat myself up over
- it, and was lonely and depressed
- because of it. He said that Helen
- left me because of "my negativity".
- CAIT
- You know that's not true, Ellis.
- ELLIS
- I left Helen because it was long
- distance, she was depressed, I was
- fucked up, and I couldn't take care
- of her. We'd broken up three times
- prior. I had to end it. I also did
- shit that I can never take back.
- And I gotta live with that mistake.
- I'm a shitty person.
- CAIT
- Give me your hand Ellis.
- Ellis gives Cait his hand.
- Cait holds it and smiles at Ellis.
- CAIT (CONT'D)
- That's not you, Ellis Parsons. What
- kind of shitty person admits to
- their mistakes?
- ELLIS
- One that's sociopathic and acting
- like they have to come around.
- Cait holds Ellis's hand.
- CAIT
- It's sociopathic if you say you're
- going to change something and never
- do to get people on your side, and
- Ellis. That's what Ronnie did. You
- being you, people don't normally
- take your side because you call
- them out on their shit.
- The bill is put on their table.
- IND WAITRESS
- Here's your bill, pay for this up
- front when y'all are ready. Who's
- this, Cait?
- CAIT
- It's a friend of mine out of
- Phoenix, Ellis.
- She grins at Ellis.
- IND WAITRESS
- He looks nice in comparison to your
- last.
- Ellis just smiles.
- ELLIS
- Yeah, I guess.
- CAIT
- I'm paying.
- ELLIS
- Keep your fucking money, I'll pay.
- Cait glares at Ellis. Ellis just gives her a smile.
- ELLIS (CONT'D)
- You're paying later, anyway.
- Ellis shoots her a wink.
- CAIT
- Fine.
- She smiles at this.
- CUT TO:
- CAIT'S CAR
- The two overlook a park and hold hands.
- ELLIS
- Hey Cait?
- CAIT
- Yeah?
- ELLIS
- Don't take this the wrong way- Are
- you autistic?
- CAIT
- Excuse me?
- Ellis's eyes widen.
- ELLIS
- Wait, wait. I'm saying that because
- I am.
- CAIT
- Wait. What? You? I still don't
- believe it.
- ELLIS
- Yeah. High functioning.
- CAIT
- Shit. I didn't know that. I thought
- you were just awkward and
- depressed.
- ELLIS
- Me too. I got diagnosed halfway
- through middle school.
- CAIT
- Yeah, I am. About the same as you.
- ELLIS
- Well, shit.
- CAIT
- You want to go for a walk?
- ELLIS
- Yeah, sure not like I'm able to at
- work anyway.
- MONTAGE - VARIOUS
- EXT. PARK - DAY
- The two walk through the park. They look happy as they hold
- hands.
- They come back to
- CAIT'S CAR
- The two get inside.
- ELLIS
- Hey Cait?
- CAIT
- Yeah, Ellis?
- ELLIS
- I appreciate this.
- Ellis holds her hand again and the two pull in for a kiss.
- CAIT
- Why don't we go take this somewhere
- else?
- Cait moves her hand down Ellis's pants and grins at him.
- Ellis's eyes widen.
- ELLIS
- Y-Yeah. We could do that.
- Cait kisses Ellis on the lips, gets her hand out of Ellis's
- pants, and starts the car.
- FADE TO BLACK.
