Blew through Gensokyo's wind quite frequently prior to DDC.

A wind and sound youkai who recently acquired a humanoid form.
Known for playing much faster melodies than a real harpsichord could.

Ability: Able to produce sawtooth waves without an instrument

A wind and sound youkai employed at Studio Canvas Co., alongside all the other bosses.
She isn't heard in Gensokyo all that often, so she's stationed just outside SD Co. as a security guard.
If you want to communicate with the world of sound, you need to go through the MIDI Interface!

SD Co.'s receptionists, and the two self-professed big names who ANY Eastern-style composer should know.
...Though they're not very famous at all outside of SD Co.
Mazari is slightly more well-known for her work in games such as UFO.

Merlin doesn't have an appointment with SD Co. (*isn't using a SysEx message), so she enters the company's circuitry via MIDI-IN.

S5 Boss: Green Artifical Trumet Sound, Reedia Romance Green
Species: Tone color
Ability: Able to produce a reed instrument's sound without an instrument

It's her! Reed Romance! One of the most famous synths in the Studio Canvas repertoire. THE Touhou synth... according to some people.
None of the tone colors are actually in charge of each other, but she certainly acts like she's the boss.
Recruited the Stage 6 boss to fill Gensokyo's skies with the nostalgic sound of the mid-00's, to prove to everyone that Studio Canvas soundfont is still pretty cool.

Merlin doesn't believe in any sort of hierarchy of sounds, though. If it's exciting, it's valid. QED.

S6 Boss: The Tone Closest to Being Colorless, Douraku (D.L.A.) Kazane
Species: Tone color
Ability: Able to produce a delay system pad's sound without an instrument

The very first Special Sound instrument in the SD-80, which plays when no further LSB, MSB or PC commands have been input.
With the help of those commands, her tone can be bent and colored into any other Special instrument on the list, so she's quietly sitting underneath most Eastern-style music even if Gensokyo's never heard her.

After Merlin beats all of the tone colors in a fight, the tone colors start freeloading at the Prismriver Mansion in order to study Merlin's real, physical brass-band sound. Hooray(?)

EX Boss: A Font of Free Sound, Sugumi Otomoji
Species: Soundfont
Ability: Able to produce tone colors without an instrument

The youkai embodiment of SGM-V2.01, a freely-distributed MIDI soundfont from Shan's Soundfont Homepage.
Frequently looked down upon by official brand-name soundfonts (such as Studio Canvas Co.'s non-humanoid ocean), but she's a scrappy little freelancer who's desperate to prove her worth.
She's hardly ever heard in Gensokyo, but you might've run into her in a fan composition here or there. If it's exciting, it's valid. QED.
(...Although some of her IRL sounds are apparently stolen? Oops.)
