- Homework: p. 3 “On Your Own” - Watch people talking to each other this afternoon and tomorrow morning. What do you notice about their communication style, gestures, and word choices. Write three things you noticed.
- When they talk, people always make hand gestures and facial expressions with their eyes.
- People nod a lot when they accept something.
- People always talk loudly.
- People have a lot of intonation (not monotone).
- Some people don’t look at the eyes of the other person. (They don’t make eye contact.)
- People speak softly when they are near each other.
- People say “hmm” and “uh-huh” a lot.
- People sometimes say hello to strangers.
- People usually don’t make physical contact when they greet each other.
- ---
- p. 4 - in groups of 3, choose three questions from the list to ask your partners.
- ---
- In a conversation, what can you do, without saying sentences, to encourage your partner to continue talking? (= to make them feel good about continuing)
- - nod, make eye contact, smile, “uh huh”, “wow”, “really?” (these words are interjections)
- What are things we can say or ask to encourage our partners?
- - And then? And what next? So what happened? Can you continue? That’s good. That’s interesting. What? Are you crazy?
- You can also ask specific follow-up questions, which are questions you ask for more information after someone tells you something.
- ---
- What if you are in a hurry and you don’t want the other person to keep talking?
- - Don’t ask follow-up questions, and give short answers to questions people ask you.
- - Use falling intonation with words like “okay” or “interesting”.
- ---
- Look at the proverbs on p. 5. Do you understand what they mean?
- ---
- Homework: Make sure you understand the sayings on p. 8, and choose your favorite one.
