  1. CONTEXT FOR THIS ADVENTURE
  2. This adventure takes place at a temple on the border of Eastland and Westland, and the player will be going back and forth between these two countries a lot. The countries used to work together and be allies a long time ago. But there's been a drought going on for a while, and both countries' water supplies have run out. Paranoia and rumours are spreading, and each country is accusing the other of hoarding water, worsening the drought.
  3. The countries share a guardian spirit/deity/god, Two-Headed King Rex.
  4. The map layout is basically this:
  5.
  6. Last Oasis
  7. (Legendary water supply)
  8. |
  9. North Gate
  10. (Third great watergate)
  11. |
  12. Rex Ruins

  16. | |
  17. West Gate East Gate
  18. (One great watergate) (One great watergate)
  19. | |
  20. Westland ========== Borderlands ========== Eastland
  21.
  22. So to end the drought, the player needs to open all three watergates - opening the North Gate allows water to flow from the Last Oasis, and opening the East Gate and West Gate allows that water to flow to the kingdoms.
  23. But during a recent earthquake, the path from Eastland to East Gate was blocked by a giant boulder, and the path from Westland to West Gate was blocked by a giant ravine/fissure. To progress beyond them, the player needs to go back and forth between the countries to recruit Bom the demolitions expert and Billy the bridge builder.
  24.
  25. Also, some NPC's will comment on their hatred for the other nation hoarding water, and that, even if the water were to be restored, it wouldn't solve all of their problems. The nations are on the brink of war, and while the drought ending would pause the conflict, it wouldn't actually bring the two countries together in harmony again. So the goal is to both end the water shortage *AND* bring the two countries back together.

  94. Yugi, you are a Monster World adventurer.
  95. You take monsters with you on your aimless wandering.
  96. [TN: These first lines are used at the start of *EVERY* single RPG world introduction. We should be consistent with them]
  97.
  98. There are two sibling countries in the middle of the vast Gypti continent
  99. [TN: Probably based on the word "Egyptian". Also "sibling countries" could be "brother countries" or "sister countries"... Don't think we really have a word for this in English?]
  100.
  101. Their names are "Eastland" to the east, and "Westland" to the west.
  102. If these two countries combined their power, they would at least rival any powerful country [TN: Two points on this: I'm not sure how clear it is with my wording, "at least rival...", but the point the Japanese text is making is "Working together, they are as strong as (if not stronger than) any other country". Could probably word this to get that connotation in the translation]
  103. [Secondly, the Japanese text ends with "...If they were to". As in like, "They would be the strongest... if they were to <combine their powers, which they won't>". English doesn't conjugate the same way, so we can't really just move the "if only" to the end of the sentence like that. Might need to rewrite it to include that connotation, or else remove it entirely?]
  104.
  105. This strength is their guardian deity, "Two-Headed King Rex". [TN: This was hell to translate, and is missing the emphasis in the Japanese text that King Rex's power is incredible. Might read clearer with "This strength comes from..." instead of "is". The important notes are that they share a guardian deity, that deity is Two-Headed King Rex, and he is very powerful.]
  106.
  107. But lately, even that prosperity seems to be in decline, and there are many rumors... [TN: It's not really explicit here, but I think the implication is that, once we soon see the kings start accusing each other of hoarding water, THOSE are the rumors that are spreading]
  108.
  109. The adventurer steps foot onto the guardian temple on the borderlands.
  110.
  111.
  112. [Yugi climbs the staircase. The temple is at the top, with a priest in front of it. In front of him, the two kings are staring each other down, with a couple of guards positioned behind each king]
  113. [East King speaks to the West King]
  124. Hrfm... Anyway, there's no water anymore in my country of "Eastland". [TN: These are kings speaking, using kind of old and antiquated pronouns... Do we want them to use "our/we/etc"?. Also note, the "hrfm" is just a grunting noise this character does periodically as a verbal tic, literally 'ununu'. Feel free to omit.]
  125. [Also, the people in this adventure say like "My country of Eastland" or "This Westland", that kind of thing. That reads weird in English - we should probably just condense it to "Eastland" and "Westland" in those cases]
  126.
  127. It hasn't rained here for several years...
  128. Because of the long drought, no one has any strength left to work. [TN: This is kind of literal but reads very awkwardly to me in English]
  129. We need water, no matter what!
  130. Will you share your country's water with my country?
  131.
  132. [West King speaks]

  143. Stop talking nonsense!
  144. My country of Westland has such a terrible water shortage, we're on the brink of death!
  145. You have have that oasis there, right!?
  146. Please share that water with my country!
  147.
  148. [East King speaks]

  155. Hrfm! What are you saying... Our oasis dried up a long time ago!
  156. You're hiding some water over there, aren't you? [TN: "Over there", like, "somewhere in Westland"]
  157. Give your water here!
  158.
  159. [West King speaks]
  164. W-what!?
  165. Our country doesn't even have a drop of water!
  166. Give your water to us! [TN: Literally "Give the water from over there <in Eastland>"]
  167.
  168. [East King speaks]
  170. Give your water to us! [TN: Literally "Give the water from over there <in Westland>"]
  171.
  172. [West King speaks]
  174. Give it!
  175.
  176. [East King speaks]
  178. Give it!
  179.
  180. [West King speaks]
  183. Eh! There's no point in talking about this! [TN: Might mean more like "you're not worth talking to". The "Eh" is just the West King's verbal tic, and can be omitted if needed - literally "eei"]
  184. I'll remember this, East King!
  185.
  186. [East King speaks]
  189. I'll remember this!
  190. West King!
  191.
  192. [DM speaks]

  203. Apparently the terrible water shortage these two countries are facing is the cause of their fighting.
  204. The citizens are also in trouble! [TN: As in they are suffering from the drought, not that they are responsible for the conflict]
  205. At this rate, the two countries will go to war.
  206. Help the two countries make up and save the citizens.
  207. That's the goal of this adventure!
  208.
  209. ===================================================

  217. You've come to the Frontier Wasteland borderlands. [TN: As before, the word "wasteland" here could also be "wilderness", "desert", "plains", "steppes", ... Same with the Eastern/Western/Northern Wasteland below]
  218. Here, every 6 steps, there's a 40% chance of monsters appearing by dice roll.
  219.
  220. [Speaking to the Priest at the temple]

  236. This is the Guardian Temple.
  237. The guardian deity for two countries is enshrined here.
  238. Eastland and Westland's guardian deity "Two-Headed King Rex".
  239. A long time ago, Eastland and Westland combined their power to overcome many hardships...
  240. Now, the water shortage is the origin of these two countries not getting along.
  241. I expect their guardian deity, "Two-Headed King Rex", is surely lamenting this...
  242.
  243. [Priest after opening one gate]
  248. East Gate and West Gate...
  249. Even if either watergate opens, conflict will be inevitable... [TN: I think the point he's making here is "even if, say, the East Gate opened and Eastland had access to water, that wouldn't solve the problem. The people of Westland would still be clambering for war, and the people of Eastland would still hate their neighbors". i.e., just getting them water won't be enough to solve the root cause of the conflict, the mistrust and animosity between the two kingdoms. So if we can find a way to put all of that subtext into two textboxes, that'd be swell]
  250.
  251. ===================================================
  252.
  253. [Talking to the Priest after opening both gates. This causes this cutscene to play in sequence]

  259. East Gate and West Gate have opened...

  275. It is said that the guardian deity lives in ruins in the legendary Northern Wasteland
  276. I wish that the guardian deity will always want to watch over these countries [TN: I think the implication is that, the way things are going now, God will forsake these countries because of their feud, and the priest is praying that that won't be the case]
  277. An underground passage was made from this temple to the Northern Wasteland.
  278. From here, you can go to the "North Gate" at the Northern Wasteland
  279.
  280. ===================================================
  281.

  297. W-water...
  298. Anyone coming by, I don't care who, please, water... [TN: A bit rough of a translation, might not be exactly 100% accurate, but it's that idea. Dying of thirst, and is desperate to take anything anyone has to offer]
  299.
  300. [Spoken by a villager - a young woman]

  331. This moat was a waterway a long time ago.
  332. Now that the oasis has dried up, the water has stopped flowing. [TN: The waterway is now just a dried-up ditch because the oasis has dried up]
  333.

  338. [TN: Audio cue plays here]
  339. Billy the bridge-building craftsman lives in this house! [TN: This is wordy - we could condense it to just "bridge builder". Something like "engineer" or just "craftsman" probably is too subtle, since the player is supposed to immediately think of Billy when they later learn they need to build a bridge]
  340.
  341. [Spoken by the guard standing in front of the path leading to the Eastern Wasteland, which is currently blocked by a boulder]

  350. One of the 3 watergates, "East Gate", lies beyond this point.
  351. But the other day, an earthquake destroyed the cliff, and a boulder blocked the road.
  352. [TN: Audio cue plays here]
  353. If we had a bomb, we could destroy the boulder.
  354.
  355. [Spoken by the same guard, after blowing up the boulder]
  359. One of the 3 watergates, "East Gate", lies beyond this point.

  374. ...I want to meet up with Mary!
  375.
  376. [Spoken by Billy if you talk to him when you have Mary's Letter. After this point, he will follow you and help you build a bridge to reach the Western Wasteland]

  385. Hm, what's that? That letter...?
  386. What!
  387. Mary wants me to assist you? [TN: Literally "To give you my power"]
  388. ...Okay, I got it! For Mary, I will cooperate with you!
  389. [TN: If Bom is currently following you, the line labelled <Billy> near the bottom of this document plays after this line, so that should be translated to make sense in context with this line]
  390.
  391. [Spoken by Billy if you come talk to him again after you've fixed the bridge]
  394. It would be nice if Eastland and Westland would get along...

  416. Hrfm! Those darn stingy Westlanders...
  417. It makes me so mad!
  418. They're surely hiding water!
  419. Hrf... This is bad.
  420. If the water shortage continues like this, this country will perish...
  421. "Last Oasis"... If we could draw water from there, things would be fine... [TN: Recall, "Last Oasis" is the name of the legendary water spring behind the lost North Gate. If the North Gate were open, water would flow from the Last Oasis to the East Gate and West Gate]
  422.
  423. [Spoken by East King if you talk to him after opening the East Gate]
  424. なに?
  432. What? You already opened East Gate?
  433. Hrfm... But if you don't open the "North Gate" near the water source, no water will flow to Eastland... [TN: Refer to the diagram at the top of the document -- the water in Last Oasis is behind the North Gate, so opening the barren East Gate alone solves nothing]
  434.
  435. [Spoken by the jester in Eastland Castle]

  447. Do you know the story of "Last Oasis"?
  448. At the far end of the Northern Wasteland, there seems to be a last water source.
  449. To draw water from this oasis, you must open three watergates.
  450. But because scary monsters have taken up residence by the watergates, we can't even approach them.
  451.
  452. [Spoken by the jester in Eastland Castle if you talk to him after opening the East Gate]

  466. There's some bright grass growing on the roadside.
  467. This country calls it "Moemoesou". [TN: "Sou" is just a suffix that's common in plant/grass names, kinda like how we can use "weed" in English (milkweed, snakeweed, skunkweed, etc). "Moemoe" is onomatopoeia for burning (and also a pun, since "moe" also means "to sprout"). I don't really like either of these options, but "Wickweed" or "Waxweed" are the best English names I can think of to preserve this...]

  515.
  516. [Recruiting Billy after leaving Bom]
  517. [TN: The game only lets one of Billy and Bom follow you at a time - if Bom is following you when you give Billy the letter, Billy will tell you to come back later. Once you finish Bom's quest and he leaves, this is what Billy will say when you talk to him again]
  521. Finished with your other tasks?

  546. Rumor has it, those Eastland jerks are drinking water in secret, alone... [TN: Alone as in, without the people of Westland. Not literally without anyone - all of the Eastlanders are living it up and basically holding huge water celebrations in secret while the Westlanders die of thirst, according to this rumor]
  547. Shit! Those damned Eastland jerks!
  548. ...I want to drink too...
  549.
  550. [Spoken by a villager - an old man]

  557. This Westland and the neighboring Eastland are taking measures towards the water shortage, but talking isn't getting them anywhere, and every day is just more fighting. [TN: It's the kings that are taking the measures - they're having the meetings regularly with each other to negotiate a solution, but the rumours and suspicion mean that their discussions just turn to fighting]
  558. ...It's a problem.
  559.
  560. [Spoken by a villager - a young man. This man is standing right in front of a huge ditch in the ground.]

  567. It's been a long time since water flowed through this waterway...
  568. Ugh...
  569. Looking at the waterway makes me thirsty... [TN: This is followed by the onomatopoeia for clenching your fists, but can't really naturally add this to the English translation]
  570.

  578. Because the country's under these circumstances, Bom's fireworks festival is cancelled this year...
  579. Aaaaa...
  580. I look forward to it every year...

  614. Now, I just spend my time making explosives for road repairs.

  627. Wha? [TN: Bom has a bit of an accent, he says "Nanu" here instead of "Nani"]
  628. You need me to make a bomb to destroy the rock blocking the road?
  629. However, the king decreed no one could go to Eastland... Hmm...
  630. Okay, I understand! We're going west!
  631. I can't ignore people in trouble. [TN: Maybe "people in need" works better?]
  632. But I have a condition.
  633.
  634. [Continued from above. This dialogue also plays if you talk to Bom again before finding Moemoesou, so it needs to make sense in isolation]

  655. There! My special "road repair bomb"!
  656. [TN: If Billy is currently following you, the line labelled <Bom> near the bottom of this document plays after this line, so that should be translated to make sense in context with this line]
  657.
  658. [Continued from above. This dialogue also plays if you were unable to recruit Bom earlier (because Billy was already with you), and you try recruiting Bom again after Billy leaves. So it needs to make sense in isolation]
  662. Okay, let's go!

  897. There's are snakes that I really hate!
  898. I hate snakes, reptiles, anything with a smooth surface! [TN: A bit of a non-sequitur. There's no reference to him having a fear of snakes in the manga or anything, so I'm pretty sure this is just him whining about being in the barren wasteland - Wasteland has no water, wasteland has yes snakes.]
  899. ...N-no! I came here to cheer you on...
  900. I won't just become a burden for you! [TN: And here, him resolving to stop whining about the whole barren wasteland thing]
  901. Yugi, take this!

  916.
  917. [Trying to re-enter the Northern Wasteland at the end of the chapter once you've already opened all three watergates]
  919. You don't need to go back.
  920.
  921. [NOTE: All of the below happens in one continuous cutscene]
  922.
  923. [Returning to the temple after opening the North Gate. This is the final scene, just before the boss fight. The kings and their soldiers are facing off against each other. Spoken by East King]

  940. If that happens, my country will use all of its power to smash your country!
  941. I'll take every drop of your hidden water!
  942.
  943. [East King responds]
  946. Hrfm, what the hell! You've got guts, huh!?

  952. Eh! I'm at my limit! This is war! Prepare for war! [TN: Literally in Japanese it's "war's preparations are..." and he gets cut off by Yugi's sudden appearance. We can tweak this translation a bit so there's still a cut off at the end]
  953.
  954. [Yugi exits the secret passage from the temple. West King responds in shock at the sudden appearance]
  956. W-what the...?
  957.
  958. [Two-Headed King Rex appears behind Yugi]
  961. ROAR! ROAR!
  962.
  963. [East King responds]
  965. Eeeee! [TN: Scream noises, literally "hieeeeeee!"]
  966.
  967. [West King responds]
  969. Aaaah! [TN: Different scream noises, literally "dowaaaaaaaa!"]

  981.
  982. [NOTE: All of the below happens in one continuous cutscene]
  983.

  988. As if from nowhere, a solemn voice is heard, resounding in everyone's hearts...
  989.
  990. [Mysterious voice responds - implied to be the voice of the guardian god, Two-Headed King Rex]

1000. You should not wallow in your own country's affairs, but instead extend a hand to strangers in need. [TN: This line is a mess that I'm not 100% confident on, but the general idea seems to be "I am judging you for fighting and focusing on your own needs instead of each other". Could definitely be touched up]
1001. You should combine your powers together to face this. [TN: "To face this challenge/drought/etc"]
1002. That is the way of life for you humans. [TN: He speaks antiquatedly here, like the English equivalent of using "ye" and "thou", etc. Dunno if that's valid to keep the godlike speech. But the important connotation is "Humans live by supporting each other, not by fighting alone"]
1003. Keep in mind, I am always watching over you...
  1004.
1005. [Two-Headed King Rex disappears. Priest responds]
  1006. ...おお

1014. ...Oh! This is surely the voice of heaven!
1015. Two-Headed King Rex, guardian deity of these two countries, must have came to give us this commandment, unable to look at the evil inside of these countries. [TN: This is a mouthful. What he's saying overall is "God couldn't stand to see how much badness (evil, spite, hatred, conflict, etc) was in these two countries, so this voice was his commandment telling us to stop"]
  1016.
  1017. [East King responds]

1032. Just fighting solves nothing... Foolish... [TN: Could be reworded. It's supposed to be self-admonishment, calling himself foolish for doing nothing but fighting instead of working together during the crisis]
  1033.
1034. [The earth shakes. East King responds]

1054. I have a report for you! [TN: I have news, I have something to tell you...]
1055. Water is flowing into our country of Westland too!
  1056.
  1057. [West King responds]

1075. ...This king should be a guide and leader for his people, but instead he's been saying such selfish things... I am ashamed of him. [TN: I'm not 100% on these lines at all, but I'm confident about the general idea. East King is trying to be humble, he's talking about himself when he says "this king", and he's acknowledging how immature he's been, that his doubts and selfish acts have stoked the fires of animosity among his kingdom when he should have been thinking of the people and doing whatever it took to work together with Westland]
1076. I hear it's Westland that opened the path to the East Gate [TN: A bit unclear on this translation, so this line reads very weird. I think the point of it is that he's giving credit to Westland for solving their crisis by opening the East Gate? Like, they aren't aware that the adventurer is the one who did it, so he's just saying "I didn't solve my problems, so it must have been Westland. Thank you for helping me despite my foolish selfish actions"]
1077. ...Sorry. And thank you. After all, we need your help, West King!
  1078.
  1079. [West King responds]

1092. Likewise, isn't it Eastland that opened the path to the West Gate?
1093. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, East King!
1094. It seems I was a fool, doubting people and unable to see anything...
1095. I hope you can forgive me.
1096. From now on, we will help each other and not leave... [TN: "Not leave" is weird, maybe it means something like "not abandon each other"?]
  1097.
  1098. [DM responds]

1113. Due to the adventurer's great efforts, the two countries' water shortage crisis was averted.
1114. In addition, he was able to settle their fighting.
1115. Afterwards, Eastland of the east and Westland of the west combined their strengths, and became the superpower of the Gypti continent.
1116. It's said that the once-called "Two-Headed King Rex" continued to bless them forever [TN: The "once-called" bit confuses me here... Perhaps because you beat him in the boss fight just before this cutscene, it's like, he's still a God but he doesn't take that form anymore? Or that he has no reason to come onto earth in that form any longer, now that the kingdoms are working together?]
  1117.

1179. The large fissure prevents crossing the road. [TN: I don't really like "crossing the road" here because that reads to me like going from one edge of the road to the other. This context means that it prevents you from traveling down the road. Can we find a better way to word this?]
