    >find Ashes
    >took a while to find her so I'm relieved
    >bend down and open my arms and call to her
    >she comes running, since she's been out for a while and is hungry
    >while we're walking back to the vault, I cradle her in my arms and give her a mutfruit from my backpack to nibble on
    >it's laying on it's back in my arms, and has the mutfruit on its tummy like otters do, super cute
    >finally get to the vault
    >Erin is sitting on the top of the vault door like a lookout, turns out she was anxiously waiting this whole time
    >we're about 30 meters out still, but when she makes out the cat in my arms, her face lights up and a giant smile forms across her cheeks
    >I put Ashes down and Ashes starts running to the Vault to return to its family
    >but then, it all went awry
    >Cait, coming in from my left, steps in front of Ashes to intercept her path
    >the cat reacts and darts to the left, but cait is too good a cat catcher. She's done this too many times for Ashes to escape
    >Ashes is scooped up in the redhead's arms, and is visibly confused
    >I know what Cait does to cats, so I call out to my companion, "Please, no! Not this one! Just not this one! We'll go find more you can have!"
    >it's no use. her bloodlust at the sight of a kitty is too great for words to overcome
    >before I can say more, a sharp twist of muscles separates Ashes from her body, and the lifeless form hangs limp in the rain, plain for Erin to see
    >the look of horror on the young girl's face haunts me to this day, despite all the other violence I've seen
