9.
10. This is Kayn, the Shadow Reaper.
11.
12. He's not alone. The scythe he wields is possessed by a Darkin, named Rhaast. Each time Kayn steps onto the stage, he has to fight Rhaast for control. Inevitably, one will consume the other...you choose the victor.

18.
19. Even before we get to the statistics, we must discuss Kayn's unique mechanic, which permiates his entire set and playstyle quite handily: The internal battle for Kayn's body and his transformation. Just like in the game, one must consume the other, and you will be the one to choose.
20.
21. All of Kayn's attacks are marked in one of three ways: An Assassin attack, a Darkin attack, or Both. Every time Kayn lands one of the attacks of the appropriate type, he gets closer to transforming to the appropriate type, either the Shadow Assassin Kayn, or the Darkin Rhaast. Hitting 8 "Assassin" attacks or hitting 8 "Darkin" attacks allows Kayn to transform into the appropriate form using his Shield Special. After hitting 4 more attacks of any type (Meaning at least 12 total), Kayn can transform into the other form and choose, although this comes with some downsides. Attacks labelled as "both" fill up both meters, sometimes depending on where the attack hits. If both bars fill up at the same time, Kayn can transform into either at will and with no penalty. Kayn's portrait shows his Transformations are permanant per stock, only resetting when Kayn dies.

25. "Rage inside me will not be contained!"
26. "The spade does not dictate the architect's vision."
27.
28. Kayn's Shield Special is his transformation, available only when he has filled at least one of his bars. Tap the B button to transform into Shadow Kayn and hold it to transform into Darkin Rhaast. If you only have one form available, the button press doesn't matter. Kayn's transformation involves starting lag divided into two part: A brief vulnerable period only slightly longer than a roll, followed by Kayn being COMPLETELY INVINCIBLE during the actual transformation. The actual transformation does not take long either: Invincibility begins, animation-wise, the moment Kayn either becomes cloaked in shadows or the moment that Rhaast impales Kayn. Being interrupted does not make Kayn lose his ability to transform in absolutely any way.
29.
30. Kayn completes his transformation with a wide hitting attack that depends on the form that he takes: Shadow Kayn's attack comes out faster and is a weak slash around himself, hitting in a circular area for 8% damage that has weak knockback but decent hitstun: In other words, Shadow Kayn can combo off his transformation move on hit! Darkin Rhaast, on the other hand, takes a moment longer for his actual attack, but instead unleashes a huge blast of Darkin energy that not only clobbers foes for 16% damage, but has pretty high knockback that KOs at 120%: In other words, Darkin Rhaast has a potential kill move on his transformation. Rhaast's move takes slightly longer to end, but is slightly faster to start up.
31.
32. Both of these attacks have special properties if they are the first one to have their meter filled, giving even further incentive to try and hit the transformation you want first. Shadow Kayn will create a field of shadow-y mist around himself at the end of his slash, which lasts for 4 seconds, and which masks which attack Kayn is using inside of it, with Kayn just showing a generic "attack" animation during the starting lag, duration and ending lag: Kayn's movement and so on is shown as normally, although Kayn appears "shadowed out" visually. This field is about 1.5 Battlefield Platforms wide, and a bit higher than the distance between the ground of Battlefield and the bottommost platforms of it. Rhaast, on the other hand, will heal for half of the damage that his transformation attack deals, allowing Rhaast to get a leg up on his new life. Neither of these effects will proc if they were not the first transformation attained.
33.
34. Your new form grants you a unique Shield Special to that form and multiple other unique buffs, in addition to stat changes and move changes/replacements. Stat changes will be detailed in the statistics section and move changes during each move...but, we do have more to talk about before that, so let us get into each transformation.

37.
38. "The child is gone. The killer remains."
39.
40. Shadow Kayn is the more combo-based, speed-based of Kayn's two transformations: More difficult to play, but sometimes more rewarding, and less in the way of kill moves. His damage potential is high, but he has less killing potential than Rhaast. Rage can mess with Shadow Kayn's combos, while Rhaast gains benefits at high damage, so Shadow Kayn is usually a more ideal choice if you are lower on damage.
41.
42. Shadow Kayn has a passive ability, Shadow Assassin, which activates every 8 seconds. Specifically, every 8 seconds, Shadow Kayn's next attack gains 50% bonus damage: So, if an attack deals 8% damage, it will instead deal 12% damage. Importantly, this extra damage is not added to knockback calculations, but is to hitstun calculations...in other words, Shadow Kayn does more damage which can even increase his combo potential without needing to worry about hitting opponents out of his normal combos! This is a big bonus for Shadow Kayn's sheer damage potential, especially when combined with another move we'll get too later. This is a major selling point to abuse of Shadow Kayn.
43.
44. Shadow Kayn's Shield Special is Shadow's Student: Thrusting the handle of his scythe into the ground, Shadow Kayn expels a cloud of darkness around him which is identical to the mist that he expels when he transforms into Shadow Kayn. This cloud has the same stats, such as sixe and duration, as the transformation cloud, and there is a cooldown of 8 seconds between uses. The attack is very quick both to start and end, although it deals no damage as there is no slash, making it very hard to keep Shadow Kayn from setting this up if he wants, allowing him to create little zones of pure danger for the foe to worry about. This move begins on a 16 second cooldown if Kayn transforms into Shadow Kayn without it being the first form's meter he filled.
45.
46. Some of Shadow Kayn's moves will allow him to create Living Shadows to perform moves for him: Universally, these Living Shadows have 1/3rd the lag to create as the starting lag of whatever move it uses, after which the shadow performs the move with all of its normal stats, leaving Kayn without any lag: This opens up a lot of outplay potential and the ability to combo moves which Kayn normallu couldn't. Only certain moves can do this and will do so automatically: There is an 8 second on-move cooldown for each Shadow, during which Kayn will have to perform the move himself, but this is on a PER MOVE basis. In other words, you can have multiple Living Shadows performing DIFFERENT moves for you at once, although each one will also go on a seperate 8 second cooldown before it can be done again.
47.
48. Living Shadows can be dispelled by hitting them with any attack which deals hitstun, which also stops them from using their move. This causes hitlag for the character hitting the same as if they hit a normal character, so Kayn can sometimes use this as an opening to attack as well. Be very careful when dealing with Kayn's Living Shadows!

53.
54. When Rhaast takes over Kayn, on the other hand, it is a totally different story. Rhaast is a big, beastily and tanky character who loves to be at high damage and makes great use of Rage and damage percent in a lot of ways. Rhaast's passive benefits a very long, protracted game, meaning Rhaast is very ideal to pick when you are higher percentages and wish to survive, or when you feel you can beat the opponent in a game of attrition. Rhaast has less mobility than Shadow Kayn, but he makes up for it in a lot of ways, and he doesn't necessarily lose frame data compared to BASE Kayn. Like both of Kayn's transformations, you don't need the IDEAL situation to choose one.
55.
56. Rhaast's Passive ability is named after himself, Rhaast: The Darkin Scythe, and triggers when Rhaast hits an attack with an 8 second cooldown, just like Shadow Kayn's. When Rhaast hits an enemy, he will heal for 50% of the damage dealt: An 8% hit heals Rhaast for 4% damage. This might sound pretty low, but you need to remember that Rhaast is going to be getting this effect every 8 seconds, and can potentially get higher damage attacks as well, so it heals more than you would think.
57.
58. Rhaast's Shield Special is Darkin Blast, which is essentially his Transformation Attack: A bellowing roar, a dramatic pose and an explosion of blood red energy emanating from Rhaast. This has the rather large blast radius (half of a Smart Bomb's) and deals 16% damage that KOs at 120%, essentially, the same as the Transformation Attack. It's large range and surprisingly low starting lag make it an amazing GTFO too, although it has moderate ending lag. Rhaast will heal for half of the damage this attack deals regardless of his passive, meaning that Rhaast can get some pretty big HP swings (24%!) if it hits. This move has an 8 second cooldown, like Shadow Kayn's Shield Special, and begins on a 16 second cooldown if Rhaast is not the first form unlocked and transformed into.
59.
60. Finally, like Shadow Kayn, Rhaast has a mechanic which specifically occurs only on some of his moves, which is that some of Rhaast's moves deal bonus damage based on the amount of damage Rhaast has taken, kind of like an alternate Lucario mechanic. Unless otherwise stated in a move, the move deals 1% more damage per 10% damage Rhaast has taken, which IS included into knockback factors..AND is taken into account when Rhaast's passive is active, which can mean even more healing than you would expect. A Rhaast at high damage might not be on the ropes: Instead, he might be EXACTLY where he wants to be. Sometimes, it might be best to take out Rhaast at mid percentages with a gimp or a spike instead...

66.
67. Base Kayn is a rather unremarkable character statistically, with his size being a humanoid similiar to Lucina, but slightly shorter. His weight is on par with Robin and Roy ay 95, putting him pretty much right in the middle of the pack. His ground speed is unimpressive, tied with Pit and Dark Pit for 25th in Dash Speed and also tied with them in Walk Speed for 17th/18th. His traction fits in with Lucina, Marth, Robin and Cloud for 28th-33rd.
68.
69. Aerially, Kayn is once again pretty meh, being at Samus level for 28th in air speed and roughly average gravity (Robin, 30th) and fall speed (Marth/Lucina, 28th/29th). His jumps are slightly above average, which is a nice plus for base Kayn, but are not especially noticeable. Base Kayn can wall jump decently.
70.
71. "Kill the body. Build the mind. Free the mind..."
72.
73. Shadow Kayn, naturally, trades reliability for speed. Most noticeably, Shadow Kayn is easier to kill than normal Kayn, due to his much lower weight (83, just above Falco and Little Mac, but below Bayonetta for 46th) and significantly lower fall speed (Ness, 48th) and gravity (Lucario, 37th). Semi-uniquely, Shadow Kayn has a different fast fall speed in the vein of Ryu and Link, allowing Shadow Kayn to fast fall with a 75% increase instead of a 60% increase (Link's is 90%): This allows Shadow Kayn to do some combos only a fastfaller could...but doesn't help him much with the survival aspect. Shadow Kayn's run speed is increased to Sheik's (8th) and walk speed to Greninja's (4th). Air Speed is increased to Greninja's (8th). His jumps remain the same: Shadow Kayn can wall cling in addition to wall jump.
74.
75. "Ooooh! These legs will take some getting used to..."
76.
77. Rhaast instead gets bulky and beefy, gaining a size very similiar to Ganondorf compared to the shrimpy Kayn. His weight gets a massive buff, bringing him to 115, 1 point below Charizard and 2 above Ganondorf for 5th. In addition, Rhaast has Bowser's "Tough Guy" armor, which can allow him to power through weak attacks. Although a heavyweight, Rhaast is NOT slower than base Kayn, so don't worry about him moving like a slug. He DOES have a lot more traction, though, tied with Little Mac, Wario and Zero Suit Samus for 3rd-5th. He does, however, fall significantly faster, tied with Lucario/Cloud for 14th in Fall Speed and Ganondorf for 13th in Gravity. He has a small boost to air speed, boosted to 20th with Lucario. Rhaast actually gains a significant bonus to his jumps, being in the top 5 for both first and second jumps, which helps a lot for recovery, in addition to allowing Rhaast some different movement options compared to Kayn. While Rhaast can't wall cling like Shadow Kayn, his wall jump goes a SIGNIFICANT distance more than base Kayn, and is the highest wall jump in the game.

90.
91.
Meter Build: Both
92.
93. Excepting Kayn's mechanically tied Shield Special, his most important move likely lies in his Down Special, Umbral Trespass: It is his primary "outplay" tool in both forms with a huge variety of uses. But Kayn can't use Umbral Trespass at any time. First, Kayn must damage a foe: Whenever Kayn hits an enemy, they are marked by Umbral Trespass for 3.5 seconds, a vortex swirl of energy around them, refreshed by subsequent attacks. This shows that the foe can have Umbral Trespass used on them if they are within range, which is about half of a Smart Bomb blast radius. Upon using his Down Special, Kayn laughs as he transforms into wispy shadows and enters the nearest foe marked by Umbral Trespass (hold down B to select further away foes marked by Umbral Trespass), becoming intangible and invincible as if dodging on the same starting frame as a roll, allowing Kayn to dodge a plethora of attacks with this move...Kayn's wispy form then enters the foe, the scythe of Rhaast levitating above the foe. This deals no damage, hitstun or anything, allowing Kayn to use this without hitting the foe out of moves or end lag. Kayn travels towards the foe at 2x Sonic's dash speed.
94.
95. Once inside the foe, press B + a direction to have Kayn burst out of the foe, slashing the enemy as he does so. The direction is the knockback Kayn will hit the foe in, able to choose any of the 8 cardinal directions, with Kayn himself appearing on the opposite side of the foe: So if he hits the foe up, he will slash the foe from below, and if he hits them down, he'll slash them from above. If you press B without a direction, then Kayn will by default slash the foe in the direction he was facing when he used Umbral Trespass. Kayn can remain inside the foe for 2.5 seconds, after which he will automatically slash out of the foe, either in the direction the control stick was held when time is up, or in the direction Kayn was facing when first using the move if not. The ending lag is a bit difficult to combo and it CAN be punished if the foe shields or dodges it, but otherwise it won't be punishable. Starting lag as mentioned is short, and the move cannot be stopped when Kayn starts it: Shielding, dodging, counters, even invincibility is irrelevant, Kayn will enter the foe no matter what, although if he tries to attack someone countering, invincible etc, it will trigger counters and so on. You can't keep him out, but you can mess with him when he tries to COME out. Umbral Trespass gets more and more difficult to do with each use: While the first use only requires one hit, the next Umbral Trespass requires two hits, continuing with each Umbral Trespass in this fashion. 20 seconds after the first Umbral Trespass, this increasing penalty is reset, allowing Kayn to once again use it with a single hit: The primary purpose of this is to keep Kayn from stalling forever, to prevent infinites and to allow more power downtime for him.
96.
97. The slash itself deals 10% damage and moderate knockback: It can be a combo starter at early damage percentages and kills at 200%. The angle is pretty important, for example, you can use it as a spike in the air, and hitting someone from above on the ground can send up different combos. I'll go over move uses of the hitbox in other forms, but one thing to note is base Kayn does not take the best use of the move's hitbox, a sacrifice for its other utility. Nothing personal. Umbral Trespass grants 1 stack of both Shadow Assassin and Darkin meter, allowing Kayn to build towards either effectively.
98.
99. This move is incredibly important to Kayn, allowing him to punish moves which other characters cannot, slip behind enemy defenses, and even be a combo tool: Kayn can hitch a ride off someone he has hit away if the move has low enough ending lag, then pop out and hit them again, potentially using it as a combo extender or even a KO helping tool by popping at them towards the end of their knockback. Kayn can use it to phase through projectiles if enemies try to camp him, he can even potentially use it as a recovery if he has hit an enemy soon enough, hitching a ride off of them to get back to the stage. When Umbral Trespass is down, Kayn is at a significantly larger disadvantage against aggression, so choose when and how to use this resource wisely.

103. "You let me in...so foolish."
104.
105. Shadow Kayn's Umbral Trespass comes with a few buffs, and a new use. First off, the cooldown on Shadow Kayn's Umbral Trespass penalty reset is only 15 seconds, giving it more uptime. The range on Shadow Kayn's Umbral Trespass usage range is increased to around the size of a full Smart Bomb blast radius, enabling Shadow Kayn to use it from longer distances. The damage for Shadow Kayn's Umbral Trespass remains 10%, but the knockback is reduced, although not the hitstun: This means Shadow Kayn's Umbral Trespass is a much better combo tool, retaining its ability to combo to higher percentages. The ending lag on Shadow Kayn's Umbral Trespass is also reduced.
106.
107. The most important part of Shadow Kayn's Umbral Trespass, however, is the fact it resets his Shadow Assassin passive's cooldown. This is rather large, allowing Kayn to potentially "cheat" two uses of it into a combo. Lets take one of Shadow Kayn's most basic combos, using moves you don't know about yet admittedly: Up Tilt -> Umbral Trespass -> Up Aerial. Leaving aside any other combo uses, moves or follow-ups, Up Tilt deals 8% damage and Up Aerial deals 10% damage, for a total of 18% damage. If you just did Up Tilt -> Up Aerial (which can combo), that's all you'd get. But by weaving in Umbral Trespass and your passive, Shadow Kayn gets a bonus 9% damage, bringing this simple 3 move conmbo to 27% damage before adding Umbral Trespass' 10% damage to it!
108.
109. This is before you get to Shadow Kayn using it for stronger moves, or intricate combos: Shadow Kayn's Living Shadows can make interesting combo fodder here, with a starting combo move into a Living Shadow, Umbral Trespass, hit them INTO the Living Shadow attack, and then potentially follow-up again! This does require a move with sufficiently large hitstun to start with, an appropriate Living Shadow attack ready, and generally risky setup, but has very high potential reward.
110.
111. Shadow Kayn should also consider using this move as a defensive tool, given his low weight: Starting a combo off of a psuedo "counter" is pretty strong on a lightweight combo-er like Shadow Kayn...
112.
113.
114.
115. "Walk it off..."
116.
117. Rhaast's Umbral Trespass retains the same buff to a 15 second reset as Shadow Kayn, but it has vastly different applications, beginning with the damage and knockback it does: 10% damage + 1% more damage for every 10% that the enemy has on them, without a cap (If they're at 300%, does it really matter?). KO percentage is reduced by 5% for every 10% the foe has, starting with the base of 200% KO power, meaning it KOs at 150%, although one needs to consider the reliably of Umbral Trespass and some other tricks we'll get to that make this a lot scarier than it seems.
118.
119. Just like in the game, Rhaast gets a large heal off of this, in this case equal to half of the damage dealt, like his passive. This means 5% = 0.5% per 10% damage the foe has, which can be a pretty meaty heal, and lead to large damage swings in Rhaast's favor. Now, normally, you can't combine this with Rhaast's passive, since Rhaast needs to hit the foe before he can use Umbral Trespass, which uses up the passive buff...however, if you hit the foe with 3.5 seconds or less on the move, you can Umbral Trespass into the foe and then attack when the passive comes off cooldown, allowing Rhaast to pair the passive with Umbral Trespass, which WILL stack for FULL HEALING of the damage! So even with a 15% damage Umbral Trespass (the foe being at 50%), that's an effective 30% damage swing! (15% damage, 15% healing)
120.
121. This is pretty massive, but it requires specific timing, and the more time left until the passive becomes active, the less time you have to use Umbral Trespass properly, since if the hit runs out, you'll need to hit them again to Trespass into them, which will use up your passive. You can, however, potentially use this as a mindgame: Trespass into them before the passive is up and make them decide if you will wait out for the healing or rip into them sooner.
122.
123. While Shadow Kayn likes to use Umbral Trespass as a combo extender, Rhaast can use it as a KO extender. See, Rhaast can hit the foe away, and then hitch a ride onto them with Umbral Trespass as they fly away...then, before their hitstun ends, but as late into their knockback as possible, rip out of them so that they get hit closer to the blast zone! You'll be using Umbral Trespass in prime position for an earlier kill, allowing Rhaast to actually take some pretty early kills with this "mediocre kill move"...just be careful and make sure you can actually recover, idiot. Rhaast can also go for a spike with this, leaving himself above the foe for a prime edgeguard position, which Rhaast may want to do by slipping himself inside the foe as they recover instead of when they are knocked away, making recovery options very risky indeed.
124.
125. Rhaast normally has only the same range as base Kayn on his Umbral Trespass, which limits his ability to do this. However, as you will see, Rhaast has the ability to make enemies bleed, a damage over time effect. Bleeding foes can be Umbral Trespassed into foes at any distance, making it a supremely scary technique if the foe is trying to avoid a knockout. Bleeding foes do not trigger Rhaast's passive and the bleed DoT does NOT count as a "hit" to turn on Umbral Trespass, so you still need to smack some sense into them, though. Rhaast's Umbral Trespass has slightly more ending lag than Kayn or Shadow Kayn's, but the same starting lag.

136. Kayn's next ability is his Shadow Step, a strong mobility option that works in a somewhat R.O.B. esque fashion. Tap B to enter your "Shadow Step" mode or to exit it, a process which has low lag (although no hitbox, so still somewhat risky) as Kayn cloaks himself in shadows. Holding down B is how you use this move more than just entering/exiting it. So, then, what does Shadow Step DO?
137.
138. Well, first off, Kayn becomes like a ghost, able to move through solid objects freely: Kayn can occupy the same space as other characters without "pushing" them, and can walk through solid objects or even hide in them effortlessly. This is more important when combined with the other feature of Shadow Step, which is levitation: By holding down B and moving the control stick, Kayn can move in absolutely any direction at half of his dash speed, which combined with his shadow ghostly nature, means that Kayn can also go right into the stage, if he so chooses. He doesn't have to submerge himself fully and, importantly, he can still attack during this time...you could submerge your hurtboc entirely and try to poke through the stage with an Up Tilt, for example, to poke through the stage...however, do note that not only is this going to mean the move has quite little lag, but it is very predictable, and on any stage with platforms, they can casually stand on one to punk this strategy entirely.
139.
140. Shadow Step works on a R.O.B. fuel system, where Kayn can stay in his Shadow Step "form" for up to 6 seconds, taking 3x as long as it was used to get back: So 1 second of use requires 3 seconds of recharge to get back and if you use it all up, it takes 18 seconds to fully recharge, although you can of course use it partially charged. If Kayn cancels the move or runs out of time while inside of terrain, he is instantly transported outside of it at the nearest available location: Note that, if you're near or under ledges, this can perfectly mean below the stage in some capacity, and considering Neutral Special is important for his recovery...yeah, just chilling under the stage is pretty ineffectual. While Kayn can entirely submerge himself in the stage, a swirl of darkness will appear over the top of any terrain he is on that follows his location so that both players can track him, and he will appear transparently overladen over whatever he is going through at the time.
141.
142. Kayn can use his free flight and ability to pass through objects to pull off feats that other characters can only dream of, like avoiding edgeguard chances by phasing through the stage, or dodging attacks by quite literally lowering your hurtbox. Using it like this removes valuable recovery ability, however, MUCH MORESO in base Kayn form than either upgraded form, so you need to be pretty aware of this. In addition, your "intangibility" does not wear off when struck. While this can be a bonus at some times, like being hit through a wall and making it hard for them to follow-up, it has a severe weakness in the form of spikes especially: Ever wanted to see what it felt like to be spiked THROUGH a ledge from ABOVE without spaghetti code? Well, Kayn has you covered! He needs to be hyper-aware of his circumstances when this is an option, and probably avoid Ganondorf Down Aerials. Also, you can do some sick aerial chases with it, so remember that.

147.
148. Shadow Kayn's benefits for Shadow Step come heavily from mobility, most noticeably a SIGNIFICANT increase in how fast Shadow Kayn can move, being able to move through the air at Captain Falcon's Dash Speed, including through terrain. Needless to say, Captain Falcon dash speed is incredibly fast for a levitation movement option, and alone adds a huge range of options available for him right away, from combos to escapes and general mobility...although do be careful using it for combos and the like, given Shadow Kayn is frail, and Shadow Step being down or into a poor position can be quite bad.
