  1. Pokemon Yellow Any% Glitchless FAQ
  2.
  3. Rules:
  4.
  5. *Timing is by the in-game timer, as it shows after the Hall of Fame sequence before the credits.
  6. *Runs must be single segment (no save+quit), as otherwise the in-game timer is not accurate.
  7. *Runs must be done on English version.
  8. *Using Pokédoll on Marowak is allowed.
  9. *Digging from within buildings is allowed.
  10. *Other glitches (trainer-fly, old man, etc) are not allowed.
  11. * Having a save file present on the cart/emulator when you start the run is not allowed. This rule is in place to prevent carrying over certain parts of save data from the old file, such as the glitched "fastest" text speed. You can use Up+B+Select on the title screen to clear your save data.
  12. * All variants of VBA are banned from all GB/GBC games. The only allowed emulators are Gambatte and BGB.
  13.
  14. Q: What are you trying to accomplish?
  15. A: I am trying to defeat the Elite Four as fast as possible.
  16.
  17. Q: What does "Any% Glitchless" mean?
  18. A: "Any% Glitchless" is the name of the category I am running. The goal is to complete the game as fast as possible without any glitches. Sequence breaks (such as the Poké Doll) are allowed, however.
  19.
  20. Q: What is the World Record (WR) for Pokémon Yellow?
  21. A: 1:55 according to the in-game timer, by Gunnermaniac3.
  22.
  23. Q: Why do you name everything "A"?
  24. A: Naming commonly seen names one character saves frames throughout the entirety of the run. A is just the fastest character to select.
  25.
  26. Q: Do you use Pikachu to complete the run?
  27. A: Do you want to watch me lose?
  28.
  29. Q: Which Pokémon is used to complete this run?
  30. A: Nidoking. Nidoking has a nice overall set of stats and learns valuable moves to beat the game quickly.
  31.
  32. Q: Why do you keep resetting the game?
  33. A: Speedruns are very optimized. Starting off with proper stats is the difference between a successful and a failed run. I will reset after failing to capture a Nidoran, or if Nidoran has terrible stats after the Bug Catcher fight.
  34.
  35. Q: Why are you walking in and out of the grass/standing around while looking for Nidoran?
  36. A: I am trying to manipulate the next encounter by using a method called "DSum". The following link is a DSum chart: http://i.imgur.com/lI9EuQE.png
  37.
  38. Q: What are the stats you want for Nidoran?
  39. A: At level 8, Nidoran needs at least 15 Attack and 14 Speed. Attack can be anywhere from 14-16, Speed 13-15, and Special 11-13.
  40.
  41. Q: What does your team look like?
  42. A: Here is the list of all Pokémon I obtain at one point or another:
  43. > Pikachu - Helps catch Nidoran. Deposited shortly after.
  44. > Nidoran/Nidorino/Nidoking - Main Pokémon.
  45. > Pidgey/Spearow - Fly slave.
  46. > Sandshrew/Charmander - Cut and Dig slave.
  47. > Lapras - Strength and Surf slave.
  48.
  49. Q: Why do you purposely take damage?/What is "redbar"?
  50. A: Redbar is when you are at less than 21% health; a warning jingle plays which overwrites level-up jingles, saving chunks of time throughout a run. While it is a risky strat, it pays dividends when it is successful.
  51.
  52. Q: What are the hardest fights in Yellow?
  53. A: Shorts guy. His Ekans can Wrap you for an incredibly long time. Misty can end your run with a critical Bubblebeam. Giovanni's Dugtrio has a 1 in 5 chance to end the run. Everybody in the Elite Four besides Bruno can cause a problem of some sort.
