Nakagawa Maki was born on perhaps, the coldest day of the year, despite it being halfway through June in Osaka. The assumption was for the girl's personality to be the complete opposite of the conditions under which she was born, meaning she was to be a bright, outgoing, and optimistic child.

It's safe to say that weather-based predictions aren't always the most accurate.

Maki was born in Osaka, Japan to a Canadian-born English language teacher, and an unsuspecting florist. The love story of Maki's parents was fairly typical; boy met girl at her quaint little flower shop, girl liked boy, boy liked girl, and the rest was history... Or, the next few paragraphs of this section.

The cliche couple eventually married, moving to Toronto with a child on the way, both parents agreeing that starting a life in Canada would be much better for their newest addition. And they provided to be right, if you disregard the whole cultural disconnect. Negative aspects aside, Maki's childhood was fairly normal. She grew up as the only Nakagawa child, her mother being unable to produce more children than the one she had already given life to. Though this was the case, Maki hardly felt lonely without having siblings. In fact, after hearing horrid tales of annoying siblings from her friends, being an only child felt like a blessing to the girl.

In school, Maki was average at most. She barely managed to pass most of her classes, earning extra credit points based on good behavior. As a student, she wasn't necessarily unintelligent, but simply unmotivated and confused. Her motivation was a fixed part of her personality that hardly could've been changed at the time. However, her confusion was an ultimate result of her timidness. Maki often refrained from asking too many questions in fear of being seen as unintelligent, and suffered when exams came around. So, it proved to be an unexpected surprise to both her parents and herself that she had gained acceptance into a well-known Korean high school after beginning her training period at YG Entertainment.

Maki took place in a global audition for YG Entertainment at the age of 14, believing that debuting as an idol would be the easiest way to showcase her dancing abilities. At this point, she had studied ballet and jazz for the majority of her life; dancing was her passion, and no one could stop her from pursuing a career that allowed her to do so. Upon auditioning, she was told that she had potential, but if she were to be an idol, she couldn't be a "one-trick pony," meaning that she had to hone other performance skills before attempting to become a trainee. With this, Maki became motivated for what seemed like the first time in her life. She had a fierce determination to enter the company, and began to further shape her vocal and rap ability. After taking up several classes, and practicing until her vocal chords were sore, Maki gained enough confidence to audition again two years later. Her talents were received with great approval, and she was quickly accepted into YG Entertainment. Little did she know, the trainee life wouldn't be as easy as she expected...

Maki was met with disappointment after joining the entertainment company. Life as a trainee was extremely tiring, difficult, and lonely for the teenager. She quickly became out of touch with the outside world, losing the time to speak with her friends and family back home. To make matters worse, she was alone in a foreign land, with little to no knowledge of its customs and language. She felt hopeless, and as if this whole idol fantasy was simply a path she should've never stepped foot on. There was usually a disconnect between Maki and the other trainees, as she often struggled with Korean. Although, she did identify with other foreign trainees. Despite the languages they spoke, she was aware of the frustration that came with having difficulty communicating with the masses, and quickly befriended them out of empathy.

As far as popularity went, Maki was generally liked, as she lacked a personality to negatively judge. She was usually remembered throughout the company by her dance skills, and the excessive length of her training period. Though, this general opinion quickly changed as aspects of her questionable past were uncovered. Most of her friends remained by her side as her offenses were revealed, believing that they were fabricated by netizens. But after the rumors were confirmed to be true, Maki's fellow trainees hardly wanted to be associated with someone possessing such a reputation. She was ultimately left with a loyal few, and it was then that Maki came to the realization that the entertainment industry wasn't as genuine as she liked to believe...

ELECTRIC SHOCK ;

There is only one word that perfectly describes Nakagawa Maki's onstage personality: impactful. Nobody seems to know how she does it, or more importantly, why it happens, but every time Maki steps onto a stage, attention is immediately drawn to the young woman. She is alluring in every sense of the word. From her cheeky facial expressions, to the devilish sway of her hips, she is a natural born performer. When Maki dances, she is flirtatious and sexy. Though, she can produce a classy and graceful aura when required of her. As dancing is her strongest suit, she always appears to be having fun when doing so onstage, and is aware of how to make her mistakes seem minuscule to the public eye. With rapping, she is somewhat skilled, but has room for improvement. On occasion, she has to have extreme focus on rap lyrics in order to refrain from making mistakes. Her pronunciation often proves to be an issue when rapping in Korean. However, rapping in English seems to be an easy feat for her. Maki's vocal ability is by far her weakest skill. She prefers to not have large vocal parts, as her range is not very impressive. Her voice is light and airy; it is pleasant to listen to, but is far from lead/main vocal material.

Offstage, Maki is an entirely different person. She is reserved, cold, and seemingly unsure of herself. This is an extreme contrast from her outgoing attitude onstage. One may assume that this shy personality spawns from her inability to speak well in a foreign environment, but it's quite the opposite. Maki has always kept to herself, preferring to listen rather than to contribute. She usually lets others do the talking for her, and doesn't speak unless spoken to. Her outside appearance makes her seem closed off and judgemental, giving her an unapproachable aura at times. Though, on the inside, her mind is active with many thoughts. Maki is a bit of a dreamer, in a way. She doesn't believe in limitations; for her, working hard allows one to achieve anything. Determination seeps through her veins in many tasks that she undertakes. But people usually don't see inside of Maki at first glance, and all that can be noticed is a sheepish young girl.

The newfound language barrier that she has encountered has only made this worse; now, her opinions are completely silenced due to her inability to speak out upon them. This is somewhat painful for Maki, as she has always been one to speak out against wrongdoings towards others. Although, when injustice is being done towards herself, she is often mute — or rather, afraid. She has difficulty defending herself in fear that she'll end up being in the wrong. Maki simply allows herself to appear pathetic and pitiful in these situations. Though, she'd be lying if she said she didn't enjoy the comfort that comes with being pitied. Of course, this is extremely selfish, and Maki is well aware of the fact.

During her first performance, Maki danced to Heize's Shut Up & Groove (Feat. DEAN) with a self-made choreography. As she began, she was somewhat hesitant and did not go "all out." However, Maki surprisingly fell into tune, completely changing her attitude and becoming one with her stage persona. She finished off the dance with an impactful and strong move, hoping that it would make up for her previous mistakes.

• Was accused of having a criminal past after netizens found her named linked to a shoplifting case in 2010, which was a year before her acceptance into YG Entertainment. This is true, as Maki was caught stealing from a clothing store with a small group of friends at the age of 15. The incident was confirmed by YG representatives in 2016, and a video apology was issued by Maki herself via YouTube.


• Rumored to be dating Kim Jinwoo of WINNER after the two were spotted leaving a restaurant together. This is false, and was responded to by YG representatives soon after the rumor was spread in 2015.
