  72. Background
  73. Lionel is the youngest child of the Misteltein family, having three older brothers and two older sisters. The Misteltein family is one of the several merchant families that organize, transport, and profit off of the trade routes that go through/around the Silvail plateau, a large heavily forested landscape with sheer cliffs to the south, east, and north, the only accessible route for wagons and horses being the slope to the west. While most of the settlements around Silvail forest are centered around the cliffs for privacy, with supplies either taking the long route or being brought up by pulleys and lifts set into the cliffs. The Misteltein family is based around the town of Levin, and Lionel's older siblings have been brought up with the expectation that one of them will take over the business. However, with there being so many children in the family, Lionel's necessity was rather limited, and he was often left to his own devices, receiving the same small amount of formal education as his other siblings, but not being as rigidly educated as his other siblings. Without having any specific guidance, he chose that which entertained him, which tended to mean he did a lot of wandering around the woods, learning how to survive in the wilderness, or reading romantic books of chivalry and adventure.
  74. Eventually he decided to take his leave from his family at an early age, knowing that he was not needed and had no real place in the family business, but deciding that while the family might have some wealth, what it did not really have was status. Taking a cue from his stories, he decided that if he became famous enough throughout the world as a noble adventurer, he might be able to earn a knighthood, raising his family from the status of commoners to that of nobility. Of course, the sleepy towns of the Silvail plateau would have no grand adventures happening around them, so he traveled north and west, towards the plateau's ruling keep, Nodion. From there he decided it would be easiest to begin his story by joining a small mercenary company that was often given jobs by the local liege lord. Joining as a squire, he received valuable tutelage as well as his first real 'paycheck' under the Bewolven Lancers, but he soon became disillusioned with their operations, as they were most often hired to extort traveling caravans during the calm months, under the guise of keeping the roads safe. The nobility actually sanctioned the missions, calling it 'unofficial tariffs,' so long as they received their cut. Lionel left the mercenary company and was forced to give up much of what he had earned, including his new sword and most of his pay, since he was technically breaking contract by leaving before his allotted time was up.
  75. From there he headed south down the plateau to the greater Silensian plains, slightly saddened by his experiences thus far but still hoping to make his mark and become one of the storybook heroes he had read about.
