- I'm not somebody who follows Dragon Ball Doujinshi since 2008 or so. Before that the popularity of Dragon Ball was still strong despite GT ending at the time and so it was no wonder that artist could get a lot of attention before Youtube was as big as it's today.
- People usually talk about Dragon Ball Multiverse and Dragon Ball Toyble AF, and now since animation became a lot more accessable, Dragon Ball Delivarence and Absolon.
- Young Jijii was popular for his own AF aka Dragon Ball After the Future which is in his 4th story arc apparently.
- Non of those fanfiction really stood out to me. The former 2 were fun reads and they did have interesting spins on the franchise which explains their popularity.
- Multiverse, while having boring special chapters and a generic stackless story, did a really good job in characterizing characters Toriyama never bothered to make interesting or flash out like Raditz or Super Buu.
- Toyotaro, who got a job as current writer of the Dragon Ball Super manga, while never finishing his story, did have some great interactions and action scenes (I know, its shocking when you read how boring the fights in the Super manga are). Small bits like Goten becoming the Great Saiyaman #3 make you appreciate reading through the story if you remember certain bits of the story.
- Young Jijii's stories never striked me in those ways. After the Future is honestly boring and non of the villains stood out. The action was servicable and transformations were impactful at times. Similar problems I find in his other works like Bardock After, Super Dragon Ball AF, and Gohan x Trunks after which are victims of being "omages" or recreations most at the time like Bardock's first SSJ transformation and his fight against Chilled (yes, he wrote his own version of Episode of Bardock but without a shitty time travel plot).
- Dragon Ball VS Dream Match, however, is something I have never seen before. Certainly there were other fanfiction that tell a great story, but this is just a simple mini-manga about 2 guys fighting each other. So I expected some generic stuff you see in What If fights on Youtube with everyone going through all transformation, wasting all their moves and one gets owned at the end.
- Well, technically speaking, it still has some of those elements. It's actually takes place after Goku Black returned to the future fighting with SSJ2 Goku from Super and before confronting SSJB Vegeta. Black was impressed how his body developted fighting Goku, that he desired to fight him even more, to awaken his full potential. So he used his Time Ring to travel to another timeline where there is a Goku which happened to be GT Goku.
- Both immediately start of in SSJ2 since Black managed to tap into that form after fighting Goku from Super.
- This part is what I consider well-done fan service since it makes sense for Black to go SSJ2 after fighting himself in SSJ2 and GT Goku answering with the same form. Something a lot of Super's fan service lack: Substance. There is no reason for that to happen except because its "cool" like Roshi being in a tournament where the fate of the universe is at stake and there are at least 10 other characters that are stronger.
- With each additional transformation, GT Goku pushes Black to another form. Normally this is what would bother me too. There should be no reason either would need to go SSJ3 at this point when they could control a far stronger form better, but since GT Goku is interested in what Black is looking for while Black is just discovering his potencial slowly, it works out well.
- And since GT Goku doesn't know the true intention of Black, there is no reason to directly one shot him from his view point.
- After both have been pushed to their final form, this is where shit has to be worth it. So far the fight was very one sided based on which transformation was used. Now that 2 completely different forms from each other are used, it is time play the cards correctly.
- To my surprise, it was pretty intense. While a lot of signature attacks were used, they weren't used just for the sake of seeing it used.
- The authors really got GT Goku's mindset when making those fight scenes and how he moved accordingly. Black also adapting to Goku's body and fighting style felt natural when seeing the fight.
- So far I pretty much enjoyed both chapters of the fight. It isn't over because there is at least one more chapter that will decide how this fight will end. I want to avoid spoiling an interesting turn around to you and highly suggest you check it out yourself.
- It is not amazing but even for a fan creation it is something I would consider worth being animated into a movie. It kinda fixes the plothole of the immense power-up Black got, which could be a Zenkai (but an illogically big one), when he fought Vegeta in Super the first time, and the fight is well choreographed and flowed well.
- The ending to Chapter 2 is a mixed back and I'm still not sure if I consider it a good or bad thing. It makes sense that it happens based on what we saw the earlier chapters and is a great cliffhanger in itself, but it is something I dislike a lot in modern Dragon Ball and seems to confirm the direction the fight is heading.
- If you haven't read DBVS Dream Match, I highly suggest checking it out (links are in the description). It's a blast for What If fans and takes an interesting spin to people that care about the storytelling and characterization in Dragon Ball.
- I hope Young Jijii, and whoever is working with him on the chapter next, will blow my mind in a positive sense.
