- verb + infinitive can fit three different patterns (just like verb + gerund):
- ---
- Pattern 1: verb immediately followed by infinitive: appear to be, waiting to see, promise to pay
- (You can’t say “waiting him to see”, but you can say “waiting for him to see”. This makes it more of a pattern 3 verb, according to the book’s explanation.)
- - p. 95
- I promised to pay (you). (*I promised you to pay. - incorrect, no object + infinitive with “promise”)
- I promised you money. (promise + object + noun)
- I promised you that I would pay you. (promise + object + that-clause)
- Most pattern 1 verbs are about things I can only do for myself. (I can’t offer another person’s actions. I can’t decide another person’s actions. etc.)
- ---
- Pattern 2: verb always followed by an object and then infinitive: tell him to go, hire them to work
- - p. 97
- Pattern 2 verbs are usually about things you want from someone else. If you want it from yourself, you need a reflexive pronoun (myself, ourselves, yourself, etc.)
- They forced me to study for another hour.
- I forced myself to study for another hour.
- *I forced to study for another hour. (doesn’t make sense)
- (You can use these verbs in the passive, and then the object becomes the subject: I was forced to study for another hour. I was taught to ride a bike by my sister.)
- ---
- Pattern 3: verb + (maybe object) + infinitive: expect to do / expect you to do
- - p. 98
- I expect to pass your classes. = I expect that I will pass your classes.
- I expect you to pass your classes. = I expect that you will pass your classes.
- If you use an object, these verbs can be passive:
- I expect you to pass your classes. = You are expected (by me) to pass your classes.
- Someone expected me to pass your classes. = I was expected to pass your classes.
- Some pattern 3 verbs need “for” if there’s an object:
- I arranged to rent a car. / I arranged for my boss to rent a car.
- I waited to get the mail. / I waited for you to get the mail.
- (These verbs cannot be passive.)
