- Dear {Minister},
- We in Ireland have an issue with spiraling unregulated insurance costs in this country. Insurers are unwilling to cover certain businesses due to perceived risks in spite of them never having a claim made against them. Of late this has begun to affect local businesses across the Ireland. This year two family run facilities I regularly used have either been closed, or are threatened with closure because public insurance companies are not willing to cover Limited Liability for their businesses.
- In Tipperary a company called Bike Park Ireland (https://www.bikeparkireland.ie/) have been forced to close their doors indefinitely as they cannot be quoted. This is in spite of never having a claim against them.
- More close to home, SUAS climbing center (http://suasclimbing.ie/), a brilliant facility in the greater Limerick region is facing potential closure due to being unable to receive a quote for limited liability insurance. This has come at great loss to the Limerick community.
- In both cases we are dealing with small family run businesses. They are providing local jobs as well as a service to both adults and children, giving them an opportunity to be active and social in a healthy and safe manner. This is a benefit to everyone as activity is known to improve ones mental health and well-being. It provides a social outlet for people and an activity to do when the weather is poor.
- These businesses, and businesses like them, have not had any claims against them but are still refused insurance due to the perceived risks involved. We currently have a national climbing team for the 2024 Olympics. Are they to have nowhere to train? If businesses like these close due to unregulated insurance we as a nation will have lost. We are finally progressing and encouraging healthy living through sports and activities. Are we to return to a nation of alcoholics and anti-social behavior?
- I eagerly await your response and hope you join in the fight to save activity based businesses in Ireland.
- Kind regards,
- {Your Name}
