With the Ancients&#39; city of Atlantis discovered in the Pegasus Galaxy by Stargate Command, Dr. Elizabeth Weir and Major Sheppard lead a scientific expedition to the ancient abandoned city. When Sci-Fi announced they were going to premiere, the new Stargate show Atlantis I was very excited. I found the premiere to be an excellent portrayal of what the Stargate franchise is all about; saving the galaxy form diabolical aliens and being witty while you do it. <br/><br/>For seven years Stargate, fans have followed SG-1 with loyalty and passion. We have enjoyed the team relationships and unique worlds that the creators and writers have brought into our living rooms. When another Stargate Show was announced fans hoped it would be as good, if not better, than its predecessor SG-1 is. <br/><br/>I have to say I was not disappointed during the two-hour premiere of the episodes that followed in later weeks. I found the characters to be unique individuals that captured my attention and heart. I fell in love with the characters in the pilot and have not been disappointed yet.<br/><br/>Atlantis is located in the dwarf galaxy Pegasus a galaxy near the Andromeda galaxy. After the expedition of military personnel and scientists arrive, they are stranded in the undersea city and when the shield holding back the ocean collapses the city serviced to protect the inhabitants of the once dormant city.<br/><br/>The enemy is a race called the Wraith. They are life suckers and practically immortal. They have a hive mentality and when the main caretaker was killed, her death triggered the awakening of the full hive. The Wraiths fought a war with the Ancients and beat them back to Earth. <br/><br/>The main character John Sheppard is an Air Force Major who was banished to the U.S. Antarctic base McMurdo after disobeying a direct order in an attempt to rescue three service men. He has little respect for authority until they prove themselves. After the pilot episode, he becomes commander of the military forces assigned to the Atlantis expedition. On a personal note he is extremely sexy, especially his eyebrows.<br/><br/>Dr. Elizabeth Wier is the leader of the Atlantis expedition. She is a former treaty negotiator for the U.S. who speaks five languages fluently. She is a competent head of Atlantis although she is still trying to get her feet under her when it comes to the military aspect of her command. She is beautiful and stubborn, but also cares deeply for all of those under her command.<br/><br/>The much beloved character Dr. Rodney McKay returns to the Stargate franchise as a main character in Atlantis. His character in SG-1 was funny in his arrogance and he brings the same comedy to Atlantis. He is the chief scientific adviser on the Atlantis expedition and must finally prove his worth by expanding his practical knowledge quickly or the entire expedition is doomed.<br/><br/>Second-in-command of the military in Atlantis is Lt. Aiden Ford. He is young and inexperienced but his intuition and courage more than makes up for the lack of experience. He admires Sheppard and looks up to him. Ford was assigned to the Antarctic base from the beginning of the research teams involvement. He has a wacky sense of humor and often spars comedic wits with Sheppard.<br/><br/>The final character is Teyla Emmagan. She is the leader of a people that was once very technologically advanced but have been reduced to primitives by the Wraith. She saves as the alien liaison between the Atlantis team and the natives of the Pegasus galaxy. She is gorgeous, physically strong, and incredibly agile.<br/><br/>This show is amazing and fun. I love to watch it and have downloaded all of the episodes so I can watch it as many times and as often as I want.
I&#39;m a big fan of Stargate and really liked the premise of this show - that Atlantis was actually not a lost continent but a lost planet far from Earth where our ancestors are from.<br/><br/>An exploratory group of U.N. scientists and civilian-types go through along with military units whose job is to keep the place secure and the scientists safe. This of course leads to some head butting between the military&#39;s leader and the head of the civilians/scientists over who is in charge of the mission at any given time. It&#39;s supposed to be her but the military takes over sometimes when they are under threat, and the threat is always there that the guys with the guns could take over at any time, which some of them want to do.<br/><br/>The effects on the show are good, with an interesting enemy and decent writing.<br/><br/>The real failing of the show was the casting. I just couldn&#39;t make myself keep watching since the show was confined to a very limited number of characters and I couldn&#39;t stand one of them.<br/><br/>Hewlett and Higginson are both very good, in this and in other shows/films I have seen. Flannigan I find just OK but he is good enough. The one character I couldn&#39;t stand watching at all was Rainbow Sun Francks, his acting was just 100% terrible, it&#39;s as if he only got his job by being the producer&#39;s son or something, but I checked and he actually had done some acting before, which surprises me.<br/><br/>Unfortunately when a show has such a small cast just one character can be enough to ruin it and that is what happened here. Too bad.
