Merchant: Of course, Lord Siegbert. We’ll have word back within the week.

Siegbert: [sweat, closed eyes] Phew.
Kaze: You did well as always, son.
Siegbert: [surprised] Ack! H-how long have you been here, Father?
Kaze: [smile] For the entire conversation. I heard you were selected to make a resupplying agreement with the local traders.
Siegbert: [sweat] I didn’t see hide nor hair of you.
Kaze: [smile, closed eyes] I am still a ninja, after all.
Siegbert: [sweat] Of course.
Siegbert: [injured] Was I really okay? I worried I came across too weakly.
Kaze: You were fine. Your approach was perfectly suited to dealing with commonfolk.
Kaze: Just follow through on that in the next meeting and you’ll do perfectly.
Siegbert: [smile, sweat] I’ll do my best, Father.

Siegbert: [sweat, blush, injured] And that’s why- it would be good if, um…
Merchant: Are you okay, Lord Siegbert? Do we need to reschedule?
Siegbert: No! No, I’m fine! Well, in fact!
Merchant: Er…
Siegbert: I just, um-
Siegbert: [eyes closed, blush, injured] (This cannot be happening.)
Siegbert: D-do you mind if we take a brief break? I’m feeling a bit unwell.
Merchant: Of course, milord.
[Merchant leaves]
Siegbert: [eyes closed] Gods… I’m a failure.
Kaze: [worried] Siegbert? Are you alright?
Siegbert: [surprised] Father?! Have you been here the whole time?
Kaze: Yes. Are you feeling unwell?
Siegbert: I- not exactly?
Siegbert: [closed eyes] My heart won’t stop pounding, and I feel dizzy. But this only started a few minutes ago.
Kaze: [worried] I see. Do you want me to fetch a healer?
Siegbert: No – we need this supply deal, after all.
Siegbert: [eyes closed] I’ll battle through somehow.
Kaze: [worried] If you’re certain.
Kaze: (I wonder…)
Kaze: I’m going to go and double-check our list of trading requests is up to date.
Kaze: Will you be fine alone?
Siegbert: [sweat] I’ll- I’ll try and manage.
Kaze: [smile] I believe in you, son.

Siegbert: I’m very pleased to hear that. We’ll expect the first supply to arrive next week, then.
Merchant: A pleasure doing business with you, milord.
[Merchant leaves]
Siegbert: [smile] That went well…
Kaze: [appears] My thoughts precisely.
Siegbert: Ack!
Kaze: Your negotiation was top-notch. You’ll be a diplomat to rival Lord/Lady Avatar at this rate.
Siegbert: [surprised] Really? Wait- you were watching me then, too?
Siegbert: I thought you had to do inventory…
Kaze: The truth is, I’ve been keeping watch for the last few negotiations. I’m sorry for telling you differently.
Kaze: I wanted to confirm a theory of mine.
Kaze: [smile] You only became self-conscious when you learned I was watching you.
Siegbert: [blush] Truly? I’m sorry.
Kaze: You needn’t apologise. I was similar as a child.
Kaze: I’d master elements of ninja training in private, only to make elementary fumbles as soon as my teachers were watching.
Kaze: I cared so deeply about their opinions that I couldn’t focus on anything.
Siegbert: [sad] I understand that feeling.
Kaze: [sad] The truth is… my brother and I grew up in a small village, Igasato, dedicated to training our ninja clan.
Kaze: There were only two ways out of the village: become accepted as a ninja, or fail and be exiled.
Kaze: The prospect of failure was terrifying, but even more frightening was carrying on every day in my training.
Kaze: I knew I was being judged, but not what they thought of me. Was I a promising candidate, or was I a mere shade from exile?
Siegbert: [sad] Father…
Kaze: Siegbert, please listen to me when I say this – you have nothing to prove to Xander or myself.
Kaze: We respect your skills and hard work, but our love for you isn’t contingent on them.
Kaze: [injured] I hate to think I could’ve engendered that fear of failure in you.
Siegbert: It’s not like that, Father. I’m afraid of disappointing you, yes, but…
Siegbert: [smile] It’s because I respect you so very much.
Siegbert: I have so much to live up to. You both deserve the best son in the world.
Kaze: [smile] We already have him. You’ve grown into such a mature young man.
Siegbert: [blush, closed eyes] I have a great role model.
