  1. ===START===
  2. syntheticPsychopomp [SP] has begun pestering enamoredLightningrod [EL]!
  3. [11:05 PM] SP: Heya, Sandra!
  4. [11:06 PM] EL: Huh? Yes hi! Trav, right? Nice hearing from you again.
  5. [11:07 PM] SP: Nice to hear it's nice hearing from me, lol.
  6. [11:07 PM] EL: Hear in the figurative sense, that is. Text to speech isn't enabled on this one.
  7. [11:08 PM] SP: Yeah, I got that.
  8. [11:08 PM] SP: I think it's a pretty common expression, right?
  9. [11:08 PM] SP: Even on purely text mediums.
  10. [11:09 PM] EL: I know, I just enjoy the poking :P
  11. [11:10 PM] SP: Ah, OK.
  12. [11:10 PM] SP: Was wondering if maybe that was some sort of cultural disconnect, right?
  13. [11:11 PM] EL: It probably is, but I've been brushing up on that!
  14. [11:12 PM] EL: Actually, the pass/fail mark for the course is determined by how cringy we find the course afterwards.
  15. [11:12 PM] SP: Really?
  16. [11:13 PM] EL: Okay I'm exaggerating, but I'm the heiress, I could probably ask them to make it the rubric.
  17. [11:13 PM] EL: It'd be irresponsible as all goes out, but I could. Heh.
  18. [11:14 PM] SP: That would probably be an abuse of power, but it might also be a just one. XD
  19. [11:16 PM] EL: If it works, it works. Easy to do those things when I can define what just is. Sort of. Power is a hard thing to have or figure out.
  20. [11:17 PM] SP: I swear, that almost reads like you're trying to bait me into more philosophical discussions, though I did sort of bring up just abuses of power, so maybe that's on me, lol.
  21. [11:19 PM] EL: Alright, alright, none of that today! We can have a decent conversation without it evolving into a musing on life, the universe, and everything.
  22. [11:20 PM] SP: Evolving, I like that word for it.
  23. [11:22 PM] EL: Evolution's true, by the way. Don't know what some humans are thinking. We caused it with some of the things we have on the colony.
  24. [11:23 PM] SP: I can't tell if you're fucking with me or not.
  25. [11:24 PM] SP: I'm almost positive you are...
  26. [11:25 PM] EL: You've met Malini before, right? I'll send you her handle when I get the chance. She works down in the tunnels to keep the colony's mechanisms going.
  27. [11:26 PM] EL: Lots of technical details, which involves a lot of biological knowledge than engineering since we use organic tech.
  28. [11:26 PM] SP: Oh, thanks, I was gonna ask for her handle actually.
  29. [11:27 PM] SP: How old are you two again?
  30. [11:27 PM] SP: Sorry, that's a bit of a random question, but I'm curious.
  31. [11:29 PM] EL: Malini looks older than she is. Troll eyes don't color in till adulthood, which is about.... I want to say nineteen human years or so? We still use the old Alternian time system, though our businesses are adopting human times.
  32. [11:30 PM] EL: I actually don't know how old she is. I'm about fifteen in human years. Give or take a few weeks.
  33. [11:31 PM] SP: Huh, guess that's my human-centric perception of the universe, but hearing about a teenager working in tunnels is weird.
  34. [11:32 PM] SP: Humans generally think teenagers should focus on going to school with maybe a part time job on the side.
  35. [11:34 PM] SP: Oh, right, I'm about, uh, I think 7 Sweeps is right?
  36. [11:34 PM] EL: I did some reading on human history. That's a modern day conceit, used to be humans apprenticed from a young age. Helped out their social units, err families.
  37. [11:34 PM] EL: And yes actually, you're right!
  38. [11:35 PM] SP: Awesome! Was worried I was gonna accidentally say I was 40 or something.
  39. [11:35 PM] EL: It's mostly necessity. We can say that learning from a young age is crucial, but comparing it with historical records and human education models, it's not so much better as it is different.
  40. [11:36 PM] EL: We're not that old a colony. We need everyone we can get. Plus, she's really good at it, so she might've come to what she's doing now naturally.
  41. [11:37 PM] EL: Also thank you for not saying 40.
  42. [11:38 PM] SP: You're welcome, lol.
  43. [11:39 PM] SP: It's an interesting cultural difference there.
  44. [11:40 PM] SP: I might ask her about her job when I talk to her, then. I'm no amateur child psychologist, but it could be interesting to compare her experience of growing up with a human's.
  45. [11:41 PM] SP: Oh, I should totally ask you about that too!
  46. [11:42 PM] SP: Trying to Google about what it's like to be the heiress brings up mostly tabloids.
  47. [11:44 PM] EL: I already gave you clearance for telling you about the transference machines, I'll tell you a bit about what it's like.
  48. [11:45 PM] EL: There's the social acclimatization program for easing hemospectral tensions. That's how I met Malini. I do that once a lunar week to get familiar with the rest of the hemospectrum.
  49. [11:47 PM] EL: There's sitting in on the legislative meetings, where I don't say much unless it's very crucial, and it's recently been the other seadwellers discussing this and that about human-troll interaction.
  50. [11:48 PM] EL: There's the intensive amounts of studying, both what my tutors arranged for me and I arranged for myself. I have two worlds' worth to study, and a third world to make up. Writing thesis papers on troll-human interactions, actually! Submitting them to plenty of human universities.
  51. [11:49 PM] EL: And there's the swimming and leisure time, since I have to keep in shape. I don't think in all of history there was ever a fat empress.
  52. [11:50 PM] SP: I'm surprised you have any leisure time with all of that...
  53. [11:50 PM] SP: Thesis papers wasn't a typo, was it?
  54. [11:52 PM] EL: Multiple incomplete papers. It started as one, then I realized there's so much to explore, had a bit of a spaced out experience not unlike human narcotics when I realized I could help define what there is to explore.
  55. [11:52 PM] EL: I'm getting there. It'll make a splash with the intellectuals, who're a group I want to win over.
  56. [11:53 PM] SP: You're so ambitious.
  57. [11:54 PM] SP: I mean that in a good way, in case that wasn't clear. I'm sort of in awe.
  58. [11:57 PM] EL: I only got one shot, I am not throwing away my shot. I have to start off on the right foot, after all!
  59. October 18, 2018
  60. [12:00 AM] SP: Only one shot, huh, I guess your first impression would be pretty important.
  61. [12:01 AM] SP: Man, Sandra, you're kind of out of my league.
  62. [12:03 AM] SP: I don't mean that in a dating context (though probably there too, lol) I'm just nowhere near considering how best to make my debut to an alien planet, right?
  63. [12:04 AM] SP: Ah, sorry, I guess you're probably out of basically everyone's league that way, no need to belabor the point.
  64. [12:06 AM] EL: I was going to say that in a significantly nicer context, but yes. I'm necessarily out of everyone else's leagues. Which makes dating a difficult chore, especially since romance is integral to understanding society.
  65. [12:07 AM] EL: That's going to be a challenge, but not one I'm convinced I can't solve.
  66. [12:08 AM] SP: Being such a figure of public scrutiny can't help much either.
  67. [12:10 AM] SP: Anyone you pick would get judged by everyone on Earth and the Moon.
  68. [12:11 AM] EL: What about you? Been thinking of anyone? You aren't a colonial heiress, last I checked. You got more agency than I do.
  69. [12:11 AM] EL: Besides me, that is, since you thought of me enough to contact me.
  70. [12:11 AM] EL: NOT in a dating sense.
  71. [12:12 AM] EL: There's nuances personal communication has that online communication fails to convey.
  72. [12:12 AM] SP: Lol, yes there are.
  73. [12:13 AM] SP: Maybe we should meet up irl some time and try to have a convo without all these awkward corrections.
  74. [12:15 AM] SP: I can't believe I just said that.
  75. [12:17 AM] EL: I can free up some time. I've done some looking up, I could explain meeting with you as human studies. There's a lot we could learn from each other.
  76. [12:19 AM] SP: I like to think I'm a studiable human, so that sounds great!
  77. [12:20 AM] EL: It's a date then.
  78. [12:20 AM] EL: WAIT NO
  79. [12:20 AM] SP: XD
  80. [12:21 AM] EL: It's a specified calendar date sometime when I'm on Earth.
  81. [12:21 AM] SP: Don't worry about it, you've been nice enough to let my last few slide, the least I can do is return the favor.
  82. [12:21 AM] SP: It is a specified calendar date sometime when you're on Earth.
  83. [12:23 AM] SP: Let me know when you can specify a date, and I'll look forward to learning with you then.
  84. [12:23 AM] EL: Sounds great, then! I'll be in touch with you when I figure something out.
  85. [12:24 AM] SP: Talk to you later!
