  1. Say Hi to Duncan
  2.
  3. > Another shopping mall, another dead end.
  4. > Duncan had hoped that this place would at least have a few canned food left.
  5. > Most people had abandoned cities when the outbreak started. Shamblers would infest them, barely make it a block being cluttered with them.
  6. > But most survivors didn't have Duncans Luck.
  7. > Then again, Luck didn't help him find any food.
  8. > "I know, this place is completely scrapped."
  9. > Duncan spun around, gun drawn.
  10. > There stood a small boy with a bandanna wrapped around his face. An empty can of spam in hand.
  11. > "Sorry I'd share, but I kinda ate it all." He tossed the can behind him. The sound of the can hit the floor, echoing throughout the empty store.
  12. > "Are you crazy! You're going to attract shamblers!" Duncan yelled softly.
  13. > "Meh." He said dismissing the warning and the gun being pointed at his head. "Shamblers only follow loud noises. Stuff Like a car motor or someone screaming or a gunshot."
  14. > Duncan caught the clue and put his gun away.
  15. > The kid pulled out his Hatchet.
  16. > "Don't get jumpy. I'm justing giving you my weapon."
  17. > "Why?"
  18. > "Trust." He tossed the hatchet and Duncan caught before it could hit the ground. It was light, bound together by ducktape for a tighter grip. "I am now completely at your mercy. Be gentle, I bruise like a peach."
  19. > "Maybe you can help me." He motioned the kid to follow and he did as ordered. "There's a store about three blocks down with a lock on it. I could have just shot it but I'd be swarmed before I could even come out with anything."
  20. > "Soooo you need my handy dandy lock picking ax to get the lock off?"
  21. > "Pretty much. But I'm not gonna kill you over an ax. So just stick with me and once we get there we get what we want and go our separate ways. No bullshit."
  22. > "Of course. No bullshit."
  23. > The duo ventured outside the mall. Duncan still holding onto his gun and the kids hatchet. It all just seemed so strange how easy he got the weapon.
  24. > But he didn't want to kill the kid. He was just trying to survive like he was. But at the same time, he wasn't going to adopt him either.
  25. > "So how do you get past the hord?" He was hesitant to explain but figured the kid wasn't going to last long anyway, might as well give him the details.
  26. > "I cover myself in shambler guts."
  27. > "Sick" Not sure if that was a compliment or not but he took it either way. "Does it really work or are you messing with me?"
  28. > "It doesn't last forever and you need to avoid touching them otherwise they see past it. You'll smell like shit but its better then being eaten alive.
  29. > "You'd be suprised." What did that mean?
  30. > "So whats your name?"
  31. > "Lemy, like the Kilmister."
  32. > "Cool, I guess." Whats a kilmister? Some D&D crap?
  33. > "Yeah I got seperated from my senpai. They always kept saying, dont wander off, just fix the van, leave the heavy work to us. Just feel bored sticking to one thing. So I went off and thought I'd look for food. That how I got lost."
  34. > He did not ask for the life story but he got one anyway.
  35. > "I'm Duncan. I've been wandering for a bit, lost my last group. My lil' technique was the only thing keeping me alive."
  36. > "Oh lucky."
  37. > "Not really."
  38. > They got about block to the store when they found a wandering mob of shamblers. Moaning and groaning as they do.
  39. > "Well poop. Were blocked." Lemy sighed.
  40. > "Not exactly. We can work our way through them." He spotted a lone shambler slowly knocking its head against a wall. "He'll do."
  41. > "I got this." Duncan was going to stop Lemy but before he could the kid already kicked the feet out from behind the shambler and drove a knife into it head the second it hit pavement.
  42. > "Wow."
  43. > "It not that impressive, you deal with these things one at a time. Their practically walking sticks."
  44. > "You had a knife." Lemy looked at the knife in his and looked genuingly suprised.
  45. > "OH! Oh shit, no sorry, I completely forgot I had this. Its my sisters... Oh crap she's gonna pissed I got shambler gunk on it." He tossed the knife over to duncan who caught it by suprise.
  46. > He used the knife to cut open the shamblers stomach and began to cover himself in gunk. The shamblers were filled with them.
  47. > Lemy followed suit and took out a whole intestine. Wrapping it around his neck like a scarf.
  48. > "You dont need the guts." He tried to explain.
  49. > "What? Does it make my head look big?"
  50. > The shamblers were scattered around the shopping square. Almost as if they were trying to relive the lifes they lost. One was even pushing a shopping for some reason.
  51. > But duncan was too focused on getting to the store. It was slow. they walked around them, if they went too fast that would give them away.
  52. > Lemy on the other hand was gingerly walking past each shambler. He even tripped one for a laugh. This kid was going to get him killed.
  53. > He had half a mind to just take the ax and leave the kid to the shamblers. But he wasn't that cruel.
  54. > They made it to the door finally.and he brought up the hatchet ready to smash the lock.
  55. > "STOP!" Lemy whispered but screamed at the same time. "What are you nuts? That gonna bring every shambler to us in minutes."
  56. > "Then why did you give me the ax?"
  57. > "So I could pick the lock." He got up to the door and pulled out a small tool. Fumbling with the lock for a good minute before it finally unlocked and they could get inside.
  58. > Duncan almost ran in, But Lemy stood in his way.
  59. > "Ax please." He held out his hand waiting for his weapon back. Duncan was hesitant. this seemed to easy.
  60. > "How about this kid, you collect your and we split it and then I'll give you your ax back."
  61. > "Hmmm" He wasn't ready to just give this kid a weapon again. "Alright, but I hope you know how to use it."
  62. > The place was stacked with food. It must have been locked up right before the outbreak. It was almost completely untouched.
  63. > They agreed to put everything they found in the middle of the store so they could divide it up and come back what they couldn't carry.
  64. > The kid was weird and annoying. But Duncan wondered how someone that young managed to survive this long. Most people had either gone crazy or bunked up in their house until they starved.
  65. > But here's a kid barely teenager with two weapons, no fear of the dead, and completely trusting some stranger with his only means of survival.
  66. > It was crazy to say the least.
  67. > To the fact he was so deep in thought about it, that he didn't hear the shambler grabbing him from behind.
  68. > Duncan felt the grip of his dead hand around his neck. He reacted by Spinning around right it was about take a good chunk out of him.
  69. > He dodged the bite but was now pinned to the floor. Kicking wildly and trying not to yell.
  70. > Lemy ran up to him and yelled at him to throw him the ax. He couldn't swing from where he was laying so out of desperation, he threw Lemy the ax.
  71. > And the kid ran off.
  72. > Son of bitch just ran off!
  73. > Until the kid came running back in and slamming the ax into the side of the shamblers head. Throwing it off Duncan.
  74. > "Sorry about that, I had to get a good running start."
  75. > "Thank kids."
  76. > "Meh. Dont worry about it."
  77. > The two look over their collection. this was enough to last one person a good year if it was spaced out.
  78. > To celebrate they shared a can of baked beans.
  79. > As they ate. Lemy asked him a question.
  80. > "Hey man. Do you know a guy named Lincoln Loud?"
  81. > "Nah never heard of him? Why you ask?"
  82. > "No reason. But did you ever know your dad or did your mom talk about him?"
  83. > "Yeah, I knew my dad. He was a carpenter. I dont know what happened to him after the outbreak. Probably dead."
  84. > "Sorry to bum you out."
  85. > "Meh, it fine. No sense on dwelling in the past I guess."
  86. > "That a good way of looking at it. Since their much of a future."
  87. > "Kinda morbid, but I guess you got a point there. You feel like can of bea-"
  88. > GHRK!
  89. > Duncan felt a sharp pain in his chest. all the way up to his neck. He looked down to see the hatchet lodged into the side of his neck.
  90. > "Shame your not related to me. Would have been nice to bring you along but you see my sister, well my older sister is a bit of stickler for her rules sooooo."
  91. > He dislodged the ax, and walked around so he was in front of duncan. The man could barely speak from all the blood spurting from his wound.
  92. > Lemy picked up the knife and pocketed it.
  93. > "But hey, thanks for the neat trick and all the food. My senpaitachi gonna love it."
  94. > Duncan wanted to strangle the little basurd but he could barely see at this point.
  95. > "You know what, I dont do this often, but since you were such a cool dude. I'm gonna add you to the collection."
  96. > Duncan felt cold at this point, but found enough stregth to grab onto Lemy's pant leg.
  97. > "Now hold still." He raised the ax over his head. "If I hit the wrong spot you won't come back right."
  98. > He dropped it down and it all went dark.
  99. > SLAP!
  100. > "Owch, jeeze sis. I'd thought you'd be happy?" Lyra shook her now sore hand from a good slap across Lemy's face.
  101. > "The food yes. You disobeying my direct order, I'm less than satisfied with." Lemy slumped in his chair. Looking to Loan for some support, but she was little too busy cleaning the knife he borrowed from her.
  102. > "I'll look past this because your family. But next time the punishment will be more severe."
  103. > "You'll kill me?"
  104. > Lyra didn't say a word. That was his cue to leave. Walking out of the tent to the others who were collecting the food he found.
  105. > "Nice find Lemy." Liby gave him a nice pat on the back. Better then nothing. But his new interest was in the pen.
  106. > He walked over to Lacy who was dragging a jawless Shambler behind her with a rope. It was tame by some degree.
  107. > "Lyra said it was your turn to put it in the pen."
  108. > "Thats fine. I was going there anyway." He took the rope pulled the shambler behind him like a dog on a leash. Walking over to a small man made pen, filled with jawless shamblers.
  109. > Each of them with a split downt he middle of their heads.
  110. > "Alright buddy, you have fun with your new friends." He stopped before closing the gate. "Whoops almost forgot to name ya."
  111. > Lemy pulled out a marker and wrote a name on the shamblers head. Pushing him into the pen with the others.
  112. > "Say Hi to Duncan everybody."
