  2. Hey Steve, am I able to host this server in this room for a bit? Too noisy for people areas.

  12. we don't really support members running servers at the space... what is it doing, why do you need to host it, and for how long?
  13.
  14. Cole Morgan [4:18 PM]
  15. Web server
  16.
  17.
  18. [4:18]
  19. Month or two
  20.
  21. [4:19]
  22. It's just my Dev server
  23.
  24. [4:19]
  25. 90% of traffic will be LAN
  26.
  27. Steve Richardson [4:19 PM]
  28. and the other 10%? are you port forwarding to it? because if so, that's pretty not cool.
  29.
  30. Cole Morgan [4:20 PM]
  31. Yeah but not on 80
  32.
  33. Steve Richardson [4:20 PM]
  34. like i said - not cool.
  35.
  36. Cole Morgan [4:20 PM]
  37. 8089 or what ever isn't used
  38.
  39. [4:21]
  40. Why is that uncool?
  41.
  42. Steve Richardson [4:21 PM]
  43. because you didn't ask me, or even tell me, and it's a security and bandwidth concern.
  44.
  45. Cole Morgan [4:21 PM]
  46. Well I'm not doing yet. This is me asking.
  47.
  48. [4:23]
  49. It's web traffic over a non standard port. I fail to see the bandwidth and or security risk. It's nginx with a firewall configured
  50.
  51. [4:23]
  52. Fairly secure box
  53.
  54. [4:23]
  55. Also, the members torrenting at the space seems like more of an issue for bandwidth vs 80kb web pages.
  56.
  57. Steve Richardson [4:25 PM]
  58. opening up services to the outside to a server located on the LAN that nobody except you controls is not cool, period.
  59.
  60. [4:25]
  61. "fairly secure" or not
  62.
  63. Cole Morgan [4:25 PM]
  64. Got it
  65.
  66. [4:26]
  67. How can I bring this more in line with the MIL policies?
  68.
  69. Steve Richardson [4:26 PM]
  70. easy, don't do it.
  71.
  72. Cole Morgan [4:27 PM]
  73. Okay.
  74.
  75. [4:30]
  76. If you have some time in the next few weeks, I'd love to get your input for a new networking plan I've been working on. I'm proposing an upgrade for the internet at the space to 1Gbps or close to it from Comcast.
  77.
  78. I know a lot of us here at the space are putting more and more of a demand on the networking, LAN and WAN.
  79.
  80. If you have time, I'd love to see what we already have and what we might need to add to provide access to higher speeds and offer more capabilities for members. I know that I'm not he only one that would like to host something from MIL. We keep buying new equipment for the Machining area, I'd love to see some expansion in the digital development world. (edited)

  82.
  83. Cole Morgan [4:53 PM]
  84. Could you please forward me the MIL netowrking policies?
  85.
  86.
  87. [4:53]
  88. I've misplaced them
  89.
  90.
  91. Steve Richardson [4:53 PM]
  92. it's your member agreement.
  93.
  94.
  95. Cole Morgan [4:53 PM]
  96. And where is that
  97.
  98.
  99. Steve Richardson [4:54 PM]
  100. you signed it, you were emailed a copy.
  101.
  102. Cole Morgan [4:55 PM]
  103. https://www.smartwaiver.com/w/5626bfb9a69fd/web/
  104. Smartwaiver
  105. Be sure to complete your smart waiver ahead of time! (15 kB)
  106.
  107. [4:55]
  108. Nothing in our member agreement says that
  109.
  110. Steve Richardson [4:55 PM]
  111. it's in the orientation paperwork, then.
  112.
  113. Cole Morgan [4:56 PM]
  114. Great, where is that?

  127. are you seriously trying to play it this way?

  136. Call me out in public for something that I was unaware of. Dick move man
  137.
  138.
  139. Steve Richardson [4:58 PM]
  140. no, a dick move is altering network configuration and trying to pretend you were asking permission.
  141.
  142. Cole Morgan [4:58 PM]
  143. Then act holier than thou for something as trivial as an open port to an old server I turned of two months ago..
  144.
  145. [4:58]
  146. That port you're talking about was for a game server two months back
  147.
  148. [4:58]
  149. Go look.
  150.
  151. [4:58]
  152. The server I'm asking isn't even plugged in and has a different IP address
  153.
  154. [4:59]
  155. 192.168.1.169 is in my office.
  156.
  157. Steve Richardson [4:59 PM]
  158. i don't care what it was for, that's bullshit. you don't use permissions i gave you for one thing to do another. i don't care how 'trivial' you think it is.
  159.
  160. Cole Morgan [5:00 PM]
  161. You didn't specify it in the rules. To me, it's not an issue. So I didnt ask.
  162.
  163. [5:00]
  164. I get you spent a ton of time setting up our networking and thus have earned the networking Tzar title.
  165.
  166. [5:02]
  167. I'm asking that you have a little faith in that I'm not doing something with malicious intent and speak to me like a colleague.. not a 5th grader scolded in front of the class. FFS
  168.
  169. Steve Richardson [5:11 PM]
  170. malicious intent or not, using admin privs i gave you for one purpose to then do something completely unrelated is not appropriate. find me another network admin in the world who would be happy to have random port forwards to random devices added on their network. hint: there aren't any.
  171.
  172. [5:12]
  173. as for being treated like a 5th grader, if you're seriously going to try to play the "it's not explicitly stated in the rules" in this situation, i'm not even sure where to start. (edited)
  174.
  175. Cole Morgan [5:14 PM]
  176. I'm not really sure what this is really about, but a few ports being open does not seem to match your response.
  177.
  178. Steve Richardson [5:15 PM]
  179. i'm pissed off because you used admin privileges given to you for one purpose to do something else, and are acting like this is somehow my problem when i called you out on it.
  180.
  181. Cole Morgan [5:15 PM]
  182. This is a community maker-space. Locking down the networking to provide relative safety is needed. Creating a blanket "No" policy for things seems off.
  183.
  184. [5:16]
  185. I am because you could have just said "Hey, please don't do that. Did you know you're not supposed to do that?" (edited)
  186.
  187. [5:16]
  188. You're being kind of a dick.
  189.
  190. Steve Richardson [5:16 PM]
  191. no, sorry, you're not making this my problem. you could have (and SHOULD have) said "hey, is it OK for me to open up a couple ports?"
  192.
  193. Cole Morgan [5:17 PM]
  194. and NOW I know that.
  195.
  196. [5:17]
  197. But calling me out in public. Fuck you man
  198.
  199. [5:17]
  200. You could have said that to me here, and done.
  201.
  202. [5:17]
  203. No harm done.
  204.
  205. Steve Richardson [5:17 PM]
  206. oh come on, there is no IT environment where that's acceptable to do that without at least asking or mentioning it to the other people managing the network.
  207.
  208. Cole Morgan [5:18 PM]
  209. Instead, you SHAM post and make this a thing.
  210.
  211. Steve Richardson [5:18 PM]
  212. that was not public, either. it's a small group of people who run the network.
  213.
  214. Cole Morgan [5:18 PM]
  215. I've never worked for a corporation. I've never managed a system with over 50 people.
  216.
  217. [5:18]
  218. I've done a lot of IT work for 10-40 employee companies and never had issues with my sites or installations.
  219.
  220. [5:19]
  221. So thank you for the education in port management.
  222.
  223. [5:23]
  224. "calling me on it" for opening ports like you caught me stealing. This is a community space. That kind of mentality is acidic to our culture. That is phrased like I'm an enemy and you're against me. We're all on the same damn side here.
  225.
  226. I'll leave it here:
  227.
  228. I didn't know that wasn't OK. I would have let someone else do that and thought nothing of it.
  229. It's not in the rules, how would I have found out?
  230. I apologize for not asking
  231. I'll be bringing this all up at the next board meeting as I feel we need to make some changes.
