  1. == Origins of the tape and legal troubles ==
  2. Kurt Cobain was the singer, songwriter and guitarist for the grunge and alternative rock three piece Nirvana from their official formation in 1987 to his untimely death in 1994 at the young age of just 27. In December 1982, 5 years before Nirvana formed, a 15 year old Cobain, along with his aunt Mari Earl, recorded a demo tape called Organised Confusion. It is the earliest known recording to exist with Cobain performing on it. However, the tape, unlike the Fecal Matter tape that came after it, was never released to the general public and no one apart from Cobain's aunt Mari and a few other close relatives have ever heard the tape. The reasoning behind this is because Courtney Love, Cobain's wife from 1992 to his death, and Nirvana's management has threatened legal action against Mari if she ever releases any contents of the tape, as they own the legal rights to Kurt's image and therefore the tapes, which means Mari would either have to give up Kurt's tapes or outright destroy them. 8 seconds of content from the tape along with a demo track have been posted on YouTube, but the track is widely considered to be fake by the Nirvana fan base, while the 8 second clip is just bits of drumming from the tape which was taken from the scene where Mari plays the 8 seconds of the tape in the documentary ''Kurt and Courtney''.

  6. Cobain wanted to record a collection of songs he had written and Mari offered to let him use her recording equipment to record his songs. Mari also offered Kurt use of her drum machine, as he only had access to his own electric guitar and Mari's bass guitar. However, Kurt declined the offer, saying he wanted to do the drumming himself in order to "keep his music pure". Kurt grabbed his mothers old pink suitcase and some wooden spoons from Mari's kitchen and asked her would they do as a make shift drum set, to which Mari replied yes. Cobain then excitedly began putting together parts for his tape on Mari's TEAC A-2340 recorder. According to Mari, the songs consisted of very heavy bass, heavily distorted guitar, and the clunky patterns of his wooden spoon and suitcase "drum kit". "It really laid the groundwork of the Nirvana sound" Mari recalled. "I remember the vocal performance consisting of low note, muffled vocals coupled with his trademark blood curdling screams". The contents are considered to be Cobain's attempt at what he considered punk rock music to be. 10. Once legal troubles began between Mari and Love, Mari took Organised Confusion and burnt it in her backyard, but kept backup copies of the tape. During her interview scene in ''Kurt and Courtney'', Mari plays a copy of the tape on her tape player, but after the drumming part, just before the song began, the narrator says the song was removed due to legal cases pressed by Love at the time. At the time of writing, the only copy of Organised Confusion is in Mari's possession at her home in Burien, Washington State.
