- Kim Eunsoo was in her first year of residency training at the hospital. The hospital was near vacant, the only people left to tend were the elderly and terminally ill. She had long fallen asleep, head cradled around her own arms on top of the receptionist desk. There was a deafening noise that started her awake, the sound of a slowed tornado siren. It was unnerving, the vibrations reaching every tendril of hair on her body. She jolted to her feet, chair sliding backward. Some of the long, fluorescent lights partially hung from the ceiling, wiring shooting bolts of irregular light. Others were completely black, others flickered an unnatural crimson hue that stained the once crisp, white walls. Papers, gloves, carts with surgical supplies, and hospital beds were strewn along the hallway as if everyone remaining in the building had fought to escape something sinister. How could she have slept through something like this?
- Eunsoo felt her heartbeat in her ears, skin crawling with unease. It was a genuine fear that she had not felt in many years, though it was inexplicable as she had not yet found the threat. The sirens went on as her vision darted around her, challenging her ability to think rationally. She didn't waste time sprinting around her desk to get to the large double doors in the lobby. Her cold, sweating hands clasped around the vertical handle, yanking back at it to no avail. They were locked. She tried all four of them until she was panting, and had even produced a crowbar in attempts to shatter the glass doors. The doctor slowed her stride, lowering her weapon to try and understand what she had missed in all her efforts. Every tower, every street light, all of the neon advertisements - pitch darkness. Cars were backed up at the intersection as far as Eunsoo could see, all turned in attempts to escape in vain. "What the hell.." She whispered to herself.
- The right thing to do would have been to search the hospital for anyone who was alive and needed medical attention. She knew this, but didn't agree with it. Instead, she ran back to her desk, picking up the phone in search of a tone. At that moment, her back turned, there was a presence. The sirens stopped, the only noise in the hospital left were the wires shorting out. Eunsoo became overwhelmed, instincts battling each other for the desire to face this new identity or to run. Her toes curled in anticipation. It felt as though it was something which was a part of her that she had not noticed until now. The sound of rapid dripping from several places and slow, grotesque squelching caused the hairs on the back of her neck to rise. Her stomach began to churn.
- "Eonni?" A gurgled, high pitched voice echoed into the lobby. Her sweating, visibly shaking fingers let go of the telephone immediately. Sanghoon, six years old, was brutally beaten, sodomized, and disemboweled alive along with his mother and father. Sanghoon was her brother. It was him. His voice. His presence, but a consuming one. She wouldn't dare look at him directly, trembling eyelids threatening to close all together. Bits, clips of a memory Eunsoo locked away flooded in. Two kites partially blocking the sun's view, meager bowls of rice and seaweed soup, her father's tense whispers, large hands on her face. Pain, pain, pain. Laughter. Cracking of bones. Ripping of meat. Screams of different octaves. So much blood. The slick sheen on organs being pulled out. Laughter. Sanghoon's one tearful eye meeting hers just as police sirens grew close. Her knees went in defeat, body relying on the chair she had once been in.
- There he was, facing her, just as he had been in those last moments. His ribcage was largely opened, abdominal skin and muscle cut back and folded over taut. His small intestine was tangled with the large, both of them gradually sliding out to touch the floor. One eye was missing from the socket, the other beaming at her with admiration. "Eonni. I'm going to give you everything you wish for now. All I need is this." Without warning, his hand reached over and penetrated through her chest. Eunsoo shrieked and struggled from this entity, but it happened faster than she could have ever fought. Out of her came the heart, the absence of it felt immediately. She began to pant in attempts to grasp air that could not be felt anymore. Sharp pain rippled from the vacancy out to the tips of her fingers and toes. All of the blood that needed to be circulated burst into her windpipe and esophagus, flooding her nose and mouth. Her head felt fuzzy, vision going dark. The last thing she could see was Sanghoon's toothy grin, holding in both his hands a still pumping heart.
- "Eunsoo? Eunsoo? Your shift is over. You can go home now." A nurse commented, a hand politely settling on Eunsoo's shoulder. She appeared to be sleeping soundly, though her eyes were already open.
