  1. ### 1. Why do you want join Ada Developers Academy?
  2.
  3. The Ada Developers Academy and I share a common goal. We share the vision of educating underrepresented individuals. This has been a mission of mine since the creation of my website, [**The Black Professional**](www.theblackprofessional.com), a digital community that curates informative content for the betterment of Black professionals.
  4.
  5. ### Why are you interested in programming?
  6.
  7. I would like to create apps that make people’s lives less complicated. I have a particular interest in iOS app development.
  8.
  9. According to Fast Company, a publication about ________, programming/coding is the most important skill to possess. It has limitless possibilities not only for customers who benefit from new technology, but it allows you to maintain relevancy in your professional career due to its demand in the workforce. It also allows you (the programmer) career flexibility. As a stay-at-home mother of four, I find that having a job provides a sense of fulfillment and balance. And with the rising costs of living and a household of six, it’s important to find a way to contribute to my household. So why not learn a new trade. In 2018, I have decided that I will push through to reach my goals!

  11. ### Tell us about your journey thus far to learn about and confirm your interest in programming.

  13. In 2010, after graduating college with a degree in _________, I became interested in programming, but with so much student loan debt, I decided the only way to go back to school would be if it were free. Then in 2012, I taught myself how to create websites. I had no idea how to create a website at the time, so I Googled “how to create a website.” After looking at all the possible platforms, I landed on WordPress. I Googled “how to make a **WordPress** website.” I watched YouTube videos and read many blog posts. With no help whatsoever, I created a website all on my own and absolutely enjoyed every moment. This project sparked my interest in basic html coding. Over time, I became confident working on my website. If ever the website was down, I would find the issue and fix it. Since then, I’ve used the resources below to learn more about programming.

  20. ### 2. If you are accepted into our program, where do you see your career in 5 years? How do you see yourself impacting the technology field
  21.
  22. In five years, I hope to be an expert in programming and working my way towards a leadership role at a local tech company. But most importantly, I want to work for an organization where I can build a career while balancing being a mother. I also believe in giving back to my community. I remember people giving back to me when I was younger, so I want pay it forward. Just as Ada Developer Academy is working to provide opportunities to underrepresented communities, I would like to significantly increase the percentage of people of color, specifically African Americans in the programming field. During the Ada Developers Academy application process, there are young women providing mentorship to those wishing to apply for this program. If I’m accepted, I see myself joining these women to mentor.

  24. ### 3. Read Ada's Vision, Mission and Inclusivity Statement. How will you contribute to Ada's vision for an inclusive and diverse community?
  25.
  26. I like to think I have already began to contribute to the vision of increasing the number of underrepresented skilled software developers. As an African American woman, first-generation college graduate, from a lower middle class family, knowledge of the career path of a programmer and/or access to programming was never a reality for me and I’m sure it’s not for many people of color, especially women and girls. Diversity and inclusion begins with providing everyone with a chance.
  27.
  28. Once I discovered the Ada Developers Academy, I immediately shared the opportunity with my circle of friends on Facebook and my website [**The Black Professional**](www.theblackprofessional.com). I believed they deserved to at least know that this opportunity existed. When we see opportunities for our community to better themselves, we take it upon ourselves to share the wealth. That’s what it takes to change the world and directly contribute to Ada’s vision.
