  1. Things you will need:
  2.
  3. Nitrate or Latex gloves
  4.
  5. Eye protection
  6.
  7. A gram scale with of maximum capacity of at least 100 grams.
  8.
  9. at least one 800ml mason jar with lid
  10.
  11. a pyrex glass baking dish with an AIRTIGHT lid
  12.
  13. A needle-less syringe/medicine dropper with a plunger.
  14.
  15. A gallon of distilled water
  16.
  17. 100% lye - you can find this in hardware stores; ace hardware is where I find it the cheapest for about $3/lb (rooto brand). It will be in the plumbing aisle sold as a drain cleaner. Just be absolutely certain it's 100% lye.
  18.
  19. VM&P naphtha - this can be a hit or a miss. You will need to find some that doesn't contain rust inhibitors but you won't be able to tell until you buy some and test it. Kleanstrip brand is what I have been using but I have read that ace hardware's store brand VM&P is relabled kleanstrip naphtha. I find kleanstrip brand at home depot. This will be in the paint aisle.

  21. Pre-extraction notes:
  22.
  23. Lye is extremely caustic when dissolved in water. It will eat through organic material fairly rapidly. Always wear gloves and eye protection when working with it and have white vinegar nearby to neutralize any spills.
  24.
  25. Naphtha is a paint thinner. It is okay if it gets on your skin but it is not okay if it gets on your stained/painted hardwood table or floors or clothes. If you spill any, stop what you are doing and clean it up immediately. It can really damage painted/stained/dyed materials.
  26.
  27. Test your Naphtha for rust inhibitors/additives by pouring a thin layer onto your pyrex baking dish and place under a fan until completely evaporated. If there is no residue left, your naphtha is safe to use.
  28.
  29. Pour 300ml distilled water into a mason jar. Then pour 50 grams lye into the water (IN THIS ORDER) and stir with a metal spoon. Dissolving lye into water produces a lot of heat so do this on a surface that won't be damaged by high heat.
  30.
  31. Next, add 50 grams shredded mhrb and place the lid on the jar and tighten is as tight as you can. Shake vigorously for 90 seconds and every 5 - 10 minutes for 45 minutes.
  32.
  33. Next, add 150ml naphtha to the jar and replace the lid. You don't want to shake the jar anymore, just slight swirling motions as if you are trying to create a vortex inside the jar.
  34.
  35. Stir it like this as much as you please for the next 90 minutes. The more, the better. I tend to do it every 10 - 15 minutes.
  36.
  37. After 90 minutes, it is a good sign if your naphtha layer has a yellow tint to it. It should still be clear though.
  38.
  39. Remove the lid from the jar and use your syringe to suck up the naphtha layer. Empty your syringe into your pyrex baking dish. Make sure you don't accidentally empty any of the dark lye/water/mhrb soup into the baking dish. If you pick some up with your syringe, just push it back out into the jar.
  40.
  41. Now, place the airtight lid on the glass baking dish and put it in the freezer for at least 6 hours, but it is best for it to sit for 24. Make sure your freezer is on its coldest setting. It should be cold enough to make ice cream hard.
  42.
  43. After, pull the dish out of the freezer gently, remove the lid, and slowly/gently pour off the naphtha into another container. This should be done within 2 minutes from the time it is removed from the freezer. White/white-yellow/yellow crystals should remain at the bottom. Let the dish air dry for 2 hours (until the remaining naphtha has evaporated). Then use a razor blade to scrape up the crystals into a smaller glass container such as a sauce bowl.
  44.
  45. Explanation of what's happening (if you're curious):
  46.
  47. The caustic water breaks down the root bark and the dmt crystals break away from the bark. DMT is less dense than water and thus floats upward after breaking free. It then dissolves into the naphtha.
  48.
  49. You then remove the naphtha and place it into a glass dish then place that dish into the freezer. When naphtha is chilled, it become a weaker solvent incapable of holding dmt and the dmt precipitates out of the naphtha to the bottom of the dish. You then pour the naphtha off and let the rest evaporate away, leaving you with the same dmt molecules that were present in the plant bark.
