  1. [17:01:25] YeesusIsDaMvp: so since WW2 is a GIGANTIC topic I will start by highlighting what I will be focusing on
  2. [17:01:35] @Darthikyu: glhf yeesus
  3. [17:02:42] YeesusIsDaMvp: First of all I will be focusing on how America joined the war and WHY, also why they didn't join immediately. After that I will go over the US war in the pacific. I decided to focus on the pacific war only for this lecture as you could make a just as long if not longer lecture on the war in europe
  4. [17:03:07] YeesusIsDaMvp: so therefore the focus of this war will mainly be on the US and japanese campaigns
  5. [17:03:42] YeesusIsDaMvp: Now before the attack on pearl harbor which happened exactly 77 years ago today
  6. [17:04:22] YeesusIsDaMvp: The USA had the stance of isolationism. This meant that the majority of the public and congress men all wanted to avoid war as "america doesn't need to get involved in europe"
  7. [17:04:49] YeesusIsDaMvp: A good example of that is some typical war cartoons which is always a good way to show a countries opinions
  8. [17:04:51] YeesusIsDaMvp: .link https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520599146793795584/467367250.jpg

  10. [17:05:31] YeesusIsDaMvp: It would take something deeply insulting to drag the US into the second world war because simply Franklin D. Roosevelt would not be able to declare war without the full support of congress and they represented a people who were determined to keep the peace in America.
  11. [17:05:51] wolf☃kitty: .....
  12. [17:05:55] wolf☃kitty: my brain hurts...
  13. [17:06:14] YeesusIsDaMvp: FDR himself had shown willingness to help the british however public was so against the idea of war that he could not say much in support
  14. [17:06:49] YeesusIsDaMvp: meanwhile Japan had grown in indo-china and occupied almost all of it
  15. [17:07:02] YeesusIsDaMvp: In July of 1941 Japan occupied all of indo-china and FDR had learned through radio-intercepts that the japanese where developing military plans at the same time as they claimed to be negotiating with the USA with good faith.
  16. [17:07:17] YeesusIsDaMvp: oh btw here's a picture of FDR
  17. [17:07:19] YeesusIsDaMvp: .link https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520599346866028546/FDR.jpg

  19. [17:07:27] sasol: sax
  20. [17:07:44] Arti╯Chu╯: FDr yes
  21. [17:07:47] YeesusIsDaMvp: this was the man who'd lead america throughout the war before he passed away and was followed by truman
  22. [17:08:25] YeesusIsDaMvp: also the only president to get 4 terms though he did not get to serve his 4th
  23. [17:08:49] YeesusIsDaMvp: to show why Japan was a problem it was important to understand the japanese ambition
  24. [17:09:06] YeesusIsDaMvp: Japan wanted to make a gigantic empire in inco-china and with full pacific control
  25. [17:09:25] YeesusIsDaMvp: which directly went against the peace USA wanted to keep since they had holding in the pacific
  26. [17:09:29] YeesusIsDaMvp: .link https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520599552022151219/asia_japan_1.jpg

  28. [17:09:43] YeesusIsDaMvp: this map shows japanese expansion by year
  29. [17:10:37] YeesusIsDaMvp: FDR could not sit by and do nothing. Japan was planning to attack the USA so FDR decided to put an oil embargo on them that would devastate Japans military resources
  30. [17:10:40] #Lionyx ❤: so they did attack France/the UK/the NL as well kinda?
  31. [17:10:54] YeesusIsDaMvp: yup
  32. [17:11:24] YeesusIsDaMvp: Japan liked seizing colonies for themselves and a lot of them where defenseless because european nations had things to do in europe
  33. [17:11:46] YeesusIsDaMvp: Japan had not stored much oil in case of a shortage and if war with the US was to happen it would have to happen early or Japan would struggle to put up a worthy invasion.
  34. [17:12:06] YeesusIsDaMvp: This was the view of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto who suggested that Japan could only be successful in the first 6 months of war against the US. Japan felt that if war was to happen they’d have to act now rather than later because later would be disastrous in their eyes.
  35. [17:12:31] YeesusIsDaMvp: Yamamoto was also one of the key men in planning the attack on pearl harbor and the idea is attributed to him
  36. [17:12:51] YeesusIsDaMvp: Yamamoto drew up with a triple assault plan. The first step was to take Guam and the Wake islands from the US. A large force would invade the philippines. With the main focus of the plan being the attack on pearl harbor and the goal of crippling the US pacific fleet.
  37. [17:13:52] YeesusIsDaMvp: the idea was if they could catch the entire pacific fleet in harbor they would be able to move unhindered and be able to get a foothold and eventually make an invasion on the American west coast
  38. [17:14:11] #Lionyx ❤: by surprise?
  39. [17:14:20] YeesusIsDaMvp: yup by surprise
  40. [17:14:31] #Lionyx ❤: that was opportunist
  41. [17:14:32] YeesusIsDaMvp: as mentioned before Japan was still negotiating with the US at this time
  42. [17:14:46] YeesusIsDaMvp: On the morning of December the 7th the US was not ready for the attack and several anti aircraft guns were unmanned.
  43. [17:15:38] YeesusIsDaMvp: one hour after the attack happened Japanese actually finally handed an official letter to the US government in washington stating they're with drawing from negotiations (news traveled slower back then so washington still hadn't heard of the attack)
  44. [17:16:10] YeesusIsDaMvp: It took little over an hour for two waves of bombers to sink four battleships and heavily damage 3 others. 12 other vessels were also damaged while over 200 aircrafts were destroyed on the ground. By the end of the day the USA had suffered 2700 casualties with just over 2000 dead.
  45. [17:16:19] YeesusIsDaMvp: .link https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520601675728289793/arizona.jpg
  46. [17:16:20] |html|<div class="infobox"><a href="https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520601675728289793/arizona.jpg"><img src="https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520601675728289793/arizona.jpg" width="379" height="300"/></a></div>
  47. [17:17:09] YeesusIsDaMvp: It would be seen as one of the darkest days in american history and would never be forgotten
  48. [17:17:39] YeesusIsDaMvp: However despite the damage inflicted on the US pacific it was to be a failure for Japan because they had failed to cripple the fleet.
  49. [17:17:43] #Lionyx ❤: I think Bush had mentioned "a sunday in 1941" after the 2001 attacks
  50. [17:18:12] YeesusIsDaMvp: yup
  51. [17:18:21] YeesusIsDaMvp: 2001 is the largest attack on america since pearl harbor
  52. [17:18:37] YeesusIsDaMvp: so bush was right to say it like that
  53. [17:19:09] YeesusIsDaMvp: Japan had failed by American luck. On the day of the attack the americans aircraft carriers where not at pearl harbor where they where supposed to be
  54. [17:19:45] YeesusIsDaMvp: this would be problematic for Japan as now America could regroup faster than anticipated
  55. [17:19:55] YeesusIsDaMvp: and the pacific fleet was not completely crippled like planned
  56. [17:20:08] YeesusIsDaMvp: On the day after pearl harbor FDR addresses congress with the now iconic opening line
  57. [17:20:14] YeesusIsDaMvp: “Yesterday, December 7, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.” - FDR
  58. [17:20:26] YeesusIsDaMvp: .link https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520725387098062869/STATE-OF-THE-UNION-WARTIME.jpg

  60. [17:20:36] YeesusIsDaMvp: FDR addressing congress
  61. [17:20:42] #Lionyx ❤: impressive
  62. [17:21:15] YeesusIsDaMvp: FDR was sure and confident in his speech when he towards the end urged congress to vote for the war
  63. [17:21:36] YeesusIsDaMvp: "With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph, so help us God." - FDR
  64. [17:22:00] YeesusIsDaMvp: After the speech a vote was held on if the United States would go to war or not. It only received one vote against and therefore the US was now at war.
  65. [17:22:25] YeesusIsDaMvp: it still is a shock to me that one dude decided to stop it from being unanimously
  66. [17:23:22] YeesusIsDaMvp: Yamamoto the Japanese admiral who had drawn up the plans for pearl harbor estimated 6 months in which Japan would need to be successful and take as much as possible
  67. [17:23:26] #Lionyx ❤: What was the reason behind the vote against if that's known?
  68. [17:23:28] YeesusIsDaMvp: Yamamoto had himself said “ "I can run wild for six months … after that, I have no expectation of success".
  69. [17:24:57] YeesusIsDaMvp: can't seem to find it Lionyx but the person who did it was a woman and she was booed when she put in her vote and publicly shamed and it destroyed her entire political career
  70. [17:25:12] YeesusIsDaMvp: seems she was just anti-war
  71. [17:25:14] #Lionyx ❤: understandably
  72. [17:25:50] YeesusIsDaMvp: Yamamoto said 6 months and it would be exactly 6 months on the DOT when Japan received their first major blow
  73. [17:26:20] YeesusIsDaMvp: The Japanese had planned to take the midway islands but ran into a gigantic ambush by the americans
  74. [17:27:49] YeesusIsDaMvp: the Americans had used code breaking to figure out when and where the next attack would be. Japan had communicated on their own messages that "target AF" af being the codename. To figure out where AF was the american code breakers sent a message from midway to the mainland stating
  75. [17:28:28] YeesusIsDaMvp: "water purification system is down" they waited 24 hours and intercepted a message from japan saying "AF is low on clean water" and therefore they now knew the exact time and place japan would attack the midway islands
  76. [17:29:05] YeesusIsDaMvp: at the battle of midway the japanese lost 4 of their aircraft carriers and a heavy cruiser while the americans only lost a carrier and a destroyer.
  77. [17:29:14] YeesusIsDaMvp: .link https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520607003777957889/26a73eeba68f004976c9a8f1a6a17462e8520a54_hq.jpg
  78. [17:29:15] |html|<div class="infobox"><a href="https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520607003777957889/26a73eeba68f004976c9a8f1a6a17462e8520a54_hq.jpg"><img src="https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520607003777957889/26a73eeba68f004976c9a8f1a6a17462e8520a54_hq.jpg" width="240" height="300"/></a></div>
  79. [17:29:36] YeesusIsDaMvp: this propaganda cartoon rings incredibly true to the situation
  80. [17:29:51] YeesusIsDaMvp: after the battle of midway it was Japan on the backfoot for the entirety of the war
  81. [17:30:08] YeesusIsDaMvp: Japan would take no more offensive actions and it would just be a defensive effort for the rest of the war
  82. [17:30:38] YeesusIsDaMvp: The US now had to come up with their strategy of offensive in the pacific. Admiral Nimitz would eventually come up with the plan of attack which would be come to known as “island hopping”
  83. [17:30:48] YeesusIsDaMvp: .link https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520608304851058730/tmp778688362830626816.jpg
  84. [17:30:49] |html|<div class="infobox"><a href="https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520608304851058730/tmp778688362830626816.jpg"><img src="https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520608304851058730/tmp778688362830626816.jpg" width="400" height="300"/></a></div>
  85. [17:30:55] YeesusIsDaMvp: blue is american forces
  86. [17:30:59] YeesusIsDaMvp: red is japanese forces
  87. [17:31:12] CutelilSylveon<3: looks like balls
  88. [17:31:17] YeesusIsDaMvp: the red outline is japanese territory at the start of the war
  89. [17:31:47] YeesusIsDaMvp: Island hopping focused on avoiding larger big island that had a large defense force and going for smaller islands
  90. [17:32:10] YeesusIsDaMvp: the small islands would then be used as a base of operations where the americans could prepare an invasion force strong enough to take out the bigger islands
  91. [17:32:45] YeesusIsDaMvp: It is also one of the reasons Nimitz is a legend when it comes to amphibious and naval warfare
  92. [17:33:14] YeesusIsDaMvp: Conditions for soldiers on pacific islands was rough. All attacks would be amphibious landings which is the equivalent of going through hell every single time because the japanese are attacking you from defensive positions.
  93. [17:33:46] YeesusIsDaMvp: (btw watch the hit tv series "The Pacific" it really does these landings well and do them justice)
  94. [17:34:09] YeesusIsDaMvp: Some of the worst examples being the battle of guadalcanal, battle of saipan and the two very famous battles for Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
  95. [17:34:15] YeesusIsDaMvp: .link https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520610190505148428/5a8f0259391d94e20f8b462b-750-563.jpg
  96. [17:34:16] |html|<div class="infobox"><a href="https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520610190505148428/5a8f0259391d94e20f8b462b-750-563.jpg"><img src="https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520610190505148428/5a8f0259391d94e20f8b462b-750-563.jpg" width="400" height="300"/></a></div>
  97. [17:34:23] YeesusIsDaMvp: US troops raising the american flag on Iwo Jima
  98. [17:34:55] YeesusIsDaMvp: The battle of okinawa would be one of the most expensive for the allies as they suffered 65,000 casualties.
  99. [17:35:29] YeesusIsDaMvp: It was determined that the Japanese would not surrender easily and it was argued that an invasion of japanese mainland would lead to US casualties in the millions
  100. [17:35:30] YeesusIsDaMvp: and the best way to move forward would be strategic bombing of civilian centers of population to try and force civilian moral to a point of calling for surrender.
  101. [17:37:01] YeesusIsDaMvp: at this point in the war bombing civilian centers of population was already standard and while today it would be seen as a war crime back then it was seen as necessary
  102. [17:37:28] YeesusIsDaMvp: An example of Japanese not being willing to surrender came on the island of Saipan
  103. [17:37:47] YeesusIsDaMvp: The battle of saipan was an interesting one because the japanese had through propaganda convinced the japanese civilian population the US where monsters who’d do despicable things to them.
  104. [17:38:21] YeesusIsDaMvp: Therefore the civilians saw the only way out as suicide. One survivor said this of the mentality japan was in “Back in those days of 100 million Japanese citizens supposedly being prepared to fight to the very last man, everybody was prepared for death,” Shigeaki said
  105. [17:38:31] YeesusIsDaMvp: “The doctrine of total obedience to the Emperor emphasized death and made light of life. The willingness to die for the Emperor on a faraway island resulted in a whole new sense of identity.” - shigeaki
  106. [17:39:44] YeesusIsDaMvp: This was to the Americans hard to understand and it made the Japanese seem almost inhuman
  107. [17:40:28] YeesusIsDaMvp: btw feel free to ask any questions whenever
  108. [17:40:48] YeesusIsDaMvp: now continuting
  109. [17:40:53] YeesusIsDaMvp: continuing*
  110. [17:41:11] YeesusIsDaMvp: As with war sometimes you have to get dirty and commit atrocities even if you are considered the “good” side. The US was no different in the pacific. While some of them where necessary others have been widely debated as “going too far”.
  111. [17:41:26] YeesusIsDaMvp: This includes the bombing campaign of the japanese mainland. The US used fire bombs on tokyo a city where things where mostly made of wood.
  112. [17:41:33] YeesusIsDaMvp: .link https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520613307183529984/Incendaries-b29.jpg
  113. [17:41:34] |html|<div class="infobox"><a href="https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520613307183529984/Incendaries-b29.jpg"><img src="https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520613307183529984/Incendaries-b29.jpg" width="400" height="259"/></a></div>
  114. [17:42:02] YeesusIsDaMvp: Carpet bombing mixed with fire bombing made a hellish combination on Japan who had a lot of cities where buildings where mainly made of wood
  115. [17:42:32] YeesusIsDaMvp: Around 100,000 people died in the tokyo fire bombings alone. About 1 million people lost their homes because 41 square kilometers of the city was razed to the ground.
  116. [17:43:00] YeesusIsDaMvp: I will return to this later when talking about the nuclear bomb
  117. [17:43:14] YeesusIsDaMvp: A survivor of the tokyo fire bombings described the experience from a civilian view point.
  118. [17:43:24] YeesusIsDaMvp: “There was a strong wind that night and as I came out of the shelter, all I could see around us was fire," she said, adding that "burning clothing, 'tatami' mats, and debris were blowing down the road and it looked like a flowing river of fire."
  119. [17:43:41] YeesusIsDaMvp: "I remember seeing other families, like us, holding hands and running through the fires,"
  120. [17:44:56] YeesusIsDaMvp: The USA had throughout the war attempted to make the perfect bomb. A weapon which could destroy the world
  121. [17:45:29] YeesusIsDaMvp: The Manhattan Project was started in 1939 and was driven forward by some of the greatest scientist to ever exist
  122. [17:45:41] YeesusIsDaMvp: .link https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/464212906959962125/520615526859276292/manhattan-project-bomb-article-about-history-ww2.png

  124. [17:45:59] #Lionyx ❤: big boy
  125. [17:46:03] YeesusIsDaMvp: yup
  126. [17:46:22] YeesusIsDaMvp: Trinity would be the code name of the first nuclear test which took place july 16th 1945 in New Mexico. At a later date Oppenheimer was interviewed in which he said (this is my fav quote ever btw Oppenheimer a goat for this)
  127. [17:46:36] YeesusIsDaMvp: “We knew the world would not be the same,” he later recalled. “A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent.” Oppenheimer, watching the fireball of the Trinity nuclear test.
  128. [17:46:56] YeesusIsDaMvp: “I remembered the line from the hindu scripture the Bhagavad Gita... Vishnu is trying to persuade the prince that he should do his duty and, to impress him, takes on his multi-armed form and says
  129. [17:47:06] YeesusIsDaMvp: “Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds” - Oppenheimer

  132. [17:47:25] YeesusIsDaMvp: young oppenheimer btw
  133. [17:48:08] YeesusIsDaMvp: The quote to me really puts it into context what he and the others had made. By making this weapons of mass destruction they had literally become death
  134. [17:48:54] YeesusIsDaMvp: and a large portion of the scientist would regret the work they did on the manhattan project including Niels Bohr, Oppenheimer and Einstein
  135. [17:50:07] YeesusIsDaMvp: Einstein famously saying that had he known the germans would fail in creating a similar weapon he would've never lifted a finger
  136. [17:50:53] YeesusIsDaMvp: It was immediately after the death of FDR that truman was sworn in and he was immediately informed for the first time of the manhattan project. In his diary that night he wrote that he had been informed that they where perfecting a weapon that could destroy the world.
  137. [17:50:58] WoomySauceッ: Hello cosmo and good afternoon
  138. [17:51:22] YeesusIsDaMvp: Truman decided that the invasion of Japan was not worth the casualties and therefore used the bombs NOT ONLY to defeat Japan but also to scare the soviets by showing this new weapon america had developed.

  141. [17:51:58] YeesusIsDaMvp: the bombings of hiroshima and nagasaki
  142. [17:52:10] YeesusIsDaMvp: The combined casualties of both is estimated between 126K and 200+K this is not including the many deaths that would follow after due to radiation.
  143. [17:52:25] YeesusIsDaMvp: While the atomic bombings are largely debated if it was “necessary” and if truman just used them “because they needed to test it on enemies”.
  144. [17:52:48] YeesusIsDaMvp: . It is in my opinion a step that had to be taken. An invasion of japan would be even more distraours for both sides and only a show of godlike power would force japan to truly surrender.
  145. [17:53:43] YeesusIsDaMvp: The Pacific war was a simple one and Japan never stood a chance after they fired the first shot.
  146. [17:55:04] YeesusIsDaMvp: The japanese surrendered on september the 2nd 1945 and this marked the official end of ww2
  147. [17:56:15] YeesusIsDaMvp: The war in the pacific was a bloody won with both sides having to resort to atrocities to win but such is war there is no truly good.
  148. [17:56:20] WoomySauceッ: Hello cosmo i am here
  149. [17:56:36] WoomySauceッ: How are all of you?
  150. [17:57:02] %not arrested: WoomySauce, please don't interrupt, Yeesus is in the middle of a lecture
  151. [17:57:10] WoomySauceッ: Sorry
  152. [17:57:21] WoomySauceッ: I leave now because i am sad
  153. [17:57:33] YeesusIsDaMvp: In the end America took control of the japanese government and unlike what would usually be done after a big war (ww1 treaty of versailles) this war had learned a lesson from history
  154. [17:57:55] YeesusIsDaMvp: the only way forward was to set Japan up for becoming a fully independent country again instead of crippling them more like had been done to germany in ww1
  155. [17:58:11] YeesusIsDaMvp: and that's why we have the Japan of today
  156. [17:59:16] YeesusIsDaMvp: ultimately the biggest problem that came out of the war was the invention of the nuclear bomb which catapulted us into a new era in which a world war will not be possible again because if it ever happens that would likely mean the end of the world
  157. [18:00:33] YeesusIsDaMvp: so today on the day of infamy it's important to not forget the past no matter how bad because you can only learn from it. This was my lecture and enjoyed making and doing it
  158. [18:00:37] YeesusIsDaMvp: thank you all for being here
  159. [18:00:43] YeesusIsDaMvp: feel free to ask any questions if you got any
  160. [18:00:44] #Lionyx ❤: thanks to you for hosting it :)
