  1. [05:58:51] <Zero-> I don't know when you'll get back, so here's the full version of the GAT system http://pastebin.com/U1XrGfAY
  2. [05:59:15] <Zero-> Let me know what you think of it when you have the time
  3. [00:51:46] <Goopi|away> okay, I read through it and here are my comments: http://pastebin.com/HXPmqDMu
  4. [00:52:49] <Zero-> thanks
  5. [00:53:10] <Goopi|away> you're welcome
  6. [00:58:22] <Zero-> Alright
  7. [00:58:25] <Zero-> So a few things
  8. [00:58:43] <Goopi> ok
  9. [00:59:13] <Zero-> First, about the subforums - waffles also pointed this to me, and i decided to just have Pending and Approved, and remove interest alltogether. Like you said, guides that would be considered would then be stickied in the Pending subforum
  10. [00:59:20] <Zero-> so there'd only be 2, that wouldn't be much of a mess
  11. [00:59:43] <Zero-> I agree with not contacting the inactive GATs outside of the forums, that may have taken it a little too far
  12. [00:59:47] <Goopi> yeah -- approved "good" guides, and the rest of the guides
  13. [01:00:25] <Zero-> yeah. also the double list is a better idea as well, so i'll change that as well
  14. [01:00:46] <Zero-> I thought I had addressed what happened to bad GATs, but basically it happens through vote
  15. [01:01:33] <Zero-> And as for the power in the forums, I was hoping that it was possible to give GATs limited power, i.e. moving and stickying threads
  16. [01:01:38] <Zero-> but not editing posts and warning users
  17. [01:02:04] <Zero-> yes, if there was a bad GAT they could do all sorts of stupid shit, but the same goes for a bad mod
  18. [01:02:07] <Goopi> mod powers are currently given by subforum
  19. [01:02:37] <Goopi> well, we have tighter control over who becomes a mod for that exact reason, along with a more limited list of them
  20. [01:04:41] <Zero-> yes
  21. [01:04:47] <Zero-> well
  22. [01:05:10] <Zero-> ... let me see, can a subform be split into two subforums? Because then you could have the "Guides" subforum comprising of Pending and Approval
  23. [01:05:34] <Goopi> yeah, you can have a forum inside a forum
  24. [01:05:42] <Zero-> And then make GATs mods of those subforums. Of course, if they misbehaved, you'd retain the right to demod them, but i don't think they can do much damage within only one subforum
  25. [01:06:02] <Goopi> they could replace all the guides with gibberish
  26. [01:06:27] <Goopi> like djflix did to his own guide when he quit
  27. [01:06:39] <Zero-> they could, then again skyewint could ban *.*
  28. [01:06:47] <Zero-> or however else you ban everybody from a channel
  29. [01:06:54] <Goopi> unbanning *!*@* is easy enough
  30. [01:07:11] <Zero-> yeah, my point is that mods can always screw up, that's why they're selected carefully
  31. [01:07:37] <Goopi> undoing edits currently means manually parsing a 80 MB daily backup SQL dump and hoping it's in there
  32. [01:07:53] <Zero-> Hmm...
  33. [01:08:06] <Zero-> How about advising guide writers to keep a copy of their guide on their computer, just in case?
  34. [01:08:24] <Zero-> Because really, anybody can replace a guide with gibberish.
  35. [01:08:30] <Zero-> ...OR
  36. [01:08:50] <Goopi> right now only the guide author or one of a half dozen or so mods can
  37. [01:08:57] <Zero-> Is it possible to allow GATs to move threads to the Approved subforum, but once they're there, editing posts is not possible?
  38. [01:09:16] <Goopi> I wish we had that find grained of permissions
  39. [01:11:15] <Zero-> hmm..
  40. [01:12:01] <Goopi> there's a plugin that if we can get it installed and working properly, will do a sort of edit history, which would solve edit abuse
  41. [01:12:01] <Zero-> well, if GATs couldn't move threads around, that'd really slow down the process
  42. [01:12:14] <Zero-> That would be really great
  43. [01:13:09] <Goopi> allowing all GATs to move threads could also lead to chaos -- one GAT disagrees with an approval, gets mad, moves the guide back out himself
  44. [01:13:44] <Goopi> perhaps if only the GAT manager does the actual moves
  45. [01:15:23] <Zero-> THAT
  46. [01:15:27] <Zero-> sorry, caps
  47. [01:15:33] <Zero-> that would be a good idea
  48. [01:15:44] <Zero-> the gat manager is the one with permission to move stuff around
  49. [01:15:49] <Goopi> also it would mean only one user needs to have mod privs
  50. [01:15:53] <Zero-> yes
  51. [01:17:20] <Zero-> But
  52. [01:17:27] <Goopi> then we only really need admin intervention to add or remove GATs, and to change who the manager is
  53. [01:17:31] <Zero-> If there were 40 GATs, we'd need 2 managers then
  54. [01:17:33] <Zero-> Yeah
  55. [01:17:44] <Zero-> i don't think there ever will be 40
  56. [01:17:51] <Goopi> 2 managers so if one isn't present?
  57. [01:18:04] <Zero-> just so all 38 votes are more manageable
  58. [01:18:24] <Goopi> why would there be an issue with number of votes?
  59. [01:18:42] <Goopi> just post each vote as a "poll" thread, and let the software tally it up
  60. [01:19:50] <Goopi> people could cast yes/no with the poll, and leave comments in replies
  61. [01:20:29] <Goopi> it also lets people change their vote until the poll is closed (which is a configurable time period when creating it)
  62. [01:24:58] <Zero-> Well
  63. [01:25:22] <Zero-> That would be an issue because GATs retain the right to change their mind and Disapprove of a guide before it's Approved
  64. [01:26:48] <Goopi> yes -- you can click "undo vote" after voting, then vote again; when the poll closes, that would be when the guide gets moved if it's approved
  65. [01:28:22] <Zero-> ah, that'd be great
  66. [01:28:34] <Zero-> yes, that'd be even better, then we could do with only one manager
  67. [01:29:37] <Goopi> sounds good
  68. [01:30:08] <Zero-> lastly, you talked about the execution of it
  69. [01:30:26] <Goopi> we mostly have that covered now
  70. [01:31:07] <Zero-> yeah, pretty much. If the forums are back up, I could make a thread with the updated rules, and also how it would be executed, or you could do this if you want to
  71. [01:31:09] <Goopi> making GAT manager a subforum mod should take care of everything but adding/removing GATs and changing the manager
  72. [01:31:22] <Goopi> yeah, it's up
  73. [01:31:34] <Zero-> Just to see what the community thinks of the idea, it is for the community after all, also to start nominations, if I can
  74. [01:31:54] <Goopi> sure
  75. [01:31:54] <Zero-> I'll have to add a rule that mods can nominate somebody, but are not allowed to be nominated
  76. [01:32:05] <Zero-> it wouldn't make sense to not let mods nominate members
  77. [01:32:25] <Goopi> mods cannot be GATs?
  78. [01:36:43] <Zero-> no, this is so people won't complain about mod elite circlejerking yada yada
  79. [01:37:02] <Goopi> ah
  80. [01:37:34] <Zero-> plus giving the members a little power also gives them some confidence
  81. [01:37:43] <Goopi> true
  82. [01:37:57] <Zero-> it won't be like they have any actual control over the site, but they'll start managing their own stuff, and i hope this also motivates people
  83. [01:38:41] <Goopi> true
