In the region of Western Oerik, near the mountains that separate it from the main continent, there was a devoted church of Pelor. They were helpful, if a little overbearing in the surrounding area, and did their best to spread and honour Pelor's teachings.
That is, until one day the church received a vision from Boccob, god of magic. The vision spoke of the church's destiny to become a powerful force for Boccob. The vision was so convincing that the clergy fell to their knees and converted to Boccob right there.
Except Imani, the church's paladin-in-training. Imani was out on an errand and didn't receive the vision.
When Imani returned, the clergy told of the vision and their new mission for Boccob. But Imani was devout to Pelor and reacted with suspicion.
What follows is a conversation between Imani and the head priest of the church.
PRIEST: Imani, believe me when I say that Boccob has shown us the way! We are destined to serve him!
[leader rolls a 4 on Persuasion check]
IMANI: Blasphemy! I know not what has afflicted you all, but I refuse to believe your madness!
PRIEST: Fine! If you will not honour Boccob, you have no place here anymore!
IMANI: *draws sword* I will not let this church be corrupted so easily! Pelor teaches that we must take quick action when necessary! I challenge you for leadership of this church!
PRIEST: *remembers he dumped Strength* Oh... wait... what I mean is...
*junior priest runs up, holding a strange white-and-gold pamphlet, and has a hurried whispered conversation with the head priest*
PRIEST: ...Congratulations, Imani!
IMANI: Huh?
PRIEST: You passed the test! The test of... uh... devotion to Pelor! This was all a test to see if you would remain devoted to Pelor, even under extreme circumstances! Uh, yeah.
IMANI: *suspicious look*
PRIEST: And as your reward, you will be sent to a prestigious paladin training school known as *checks pamphlet* Sigil Prep! It's, er, very prestigious. And far away. Really, really far away.
IMANI: ...
[Imani rolls a 2 on Insight check]
IMANI: Praise Pelor! I will make you proud at Sigil Prep, oh high priest!
PRIEST: Uh, yeah, praise Pelor! You ride for Sigil in twenty minutes, get packing.
