- A Natural Witch: Caitrin "No, it's not misspelled" Foster. Nineteen year old college attendee living at home until her housing grant kicks in. Student of preternatural biology, life sciences, herbology, and remedial maths. Spends most of her free time studying magic. Ginger (long and wavy, because too much braiding), really pale, lots of freckles. Rarely found without her book-bag, which contains her Book of Shadows, some basic ritual tools, usually one or another school books, and a large bottle of sunblock as well as writing utensils. She has a few hundred dollars squirreled away; most of her expenses are related to school. Her parents know she has a Talent, but they suspect it to be more psychic talent than actual magic. She does not dissuade them from that misconception. Her step-father Howard is a friendly sort of man, an associate at Berkeley (though she doesn't have any classes with him). Mother Caela works as a secretary at a law firm; they are comfortable, and are paying off the house. Caitrin occasionally advertises 'odd jobs' and 'good luck charms' to earn money when she feels the need for some extra cash. There are about a dozen people who will come to her for such things, and she generally trusts them.
- Female. Doesn't have too much of a social life between classes, learning, and homework. Probably, mostly, straight; faeries kind of make you question that stuff, so there's that. ....Yes, okay, so she's a virgin; she'll get over it, probably. Gets most of her Irish looks from her mother; her entirely Scottish birth father is back in the old country (specifically, Scotland) after an amicable divorce when she was a kid. Dresses to the occasion, alternating between casual and thrift-store-Bohemian. Karen (A Spooky Friend) keeps threatening to take her to a fetish club.
- A Half Full Book of Shadows. It contains a half dozen rituals, lists of magical uses for mundane things, mundane uses for magical things, lists of symbols and their associated powers and possible connections to supernatural beings, a baker's dozen spells, seven names of power, eleven words of power, and five sacred rites. It also contains a lot of notes about faerie kind, mostly her own. It is a personal project, rather than something bought or inherited; she's found that most other supposed 'Book of Shadows' tend to be useless for her, though she's not sure if that's just because they're a scam or it's just that her magic is so personal to her. Currently, she hasn't had much opportunity to discuss these things with other practitioners of witchcraft (though she has no doubt there are a couple in her herbology and preternatural biology classes).
- A Spooky Friend: Karen. She's not human, nor has she ever claimed to be human. She likes Caitrin, and is generally friendly with her. Mostly nocturnal, though liable to show up anywhere, any time, just to bug Caitrin. She won't tell Caitrin what exactly she eats, but has told Caitrin that if she ever eats someone Caitrin knows, Caitrin will definitely know about it. Incredibly sneaky. She also has a very disturbing habit of saying things that seem outrageous, yet with such sincerity it makes it hard to doubt them.
- An Enchanted Athame: A small sgian-dubh, a very small knife with a wide blade of silver and handle made of polished and layered wood. The hilt is a very pretty rainbow-colored heather gem. It is unique in that Caitrin has bound iron and mortal blood (her own, to be exact) to the blade, making it much tougher and equally useful as a pure blade or an iron blade, and capable of inflicting mortal wounds upon the fae and some monsters. It is also REALLY SHARP. It is considered a religious object and she has a concealed carry permit for it.
- Some Innate Magic: One of the first things that hinted that Caitrin was different was the fact that she was never fooled by glamour, illusion, or other visual skulduggery. Slight of hand, parlor tricks, even actual magic cannot fool her eyes so long as she is sound of mind and body. She has what she calls 'The Black Breath", name quite stolen from a certain trilogy; a puff of breath with great intent can stun, paralyze, or even knock people and animals unconscious. She is an atropopaist, able to ward away misfortune and trouble with gestures or spur-of-the-moment ritual actions. Finally, she can jinx a person who has insulted, harmed, or threatened her or someone she is standing right next to; such jinxes are one-time effects that bring swift misfortune. Nothing deadly or life-threatening, but they can cause injuries and will usually inconvenience someone terribly; this usually requires some kind of threat, warning, or gesture on her part unless she actually hates the person she is jinxing (this does not obviate the requirement that they threaten/harm/insult her first).
- Friend to Faeries: She has....well, a kind of working relationship with faeries. She has an instinctive understanding of their ways and nature, though she'd be hard pressed to explain it. If they notice their glamour doesn't work on them, they become very curious, though rarely hostile. Catrin understand the differences between seelie, unseelie, and sluagh, and has a general idea of how their courts work and the etiquette used with faeries of all kinds. Most house fey and diminutive fey are friendly towards her - in as much as their nature allows.
- A Faerie Familiar: Kiora is a pixie, standing a mere six inches tall with damselfly wings of crystal and blue edged in black. her dark hair is wild and she is usually naked, though most humans see her as a large butterfly, moth, or dragonfly. Typically she is merely a companion, though during rituals and rites she can take up a role of her own, often assisting in the rituals in greater capacity than her stature might indicate she is capable of. While she can speak, she does not usually bother. Fond of honey, sweets, and berries, she will usually eat whatever Caitrin is eating (and she will eat meat, preferably under-cooked). Caitrin suspects she can feed off of fear and confusion, but blood is power and Caitrin's blood is a powerful drug for her; she will also respond to bribes of pretty ribbon or delicate lace. Like all faeries, Kiora is extraordinarily strong and durable for her size, and functionally immortal.
- Heterochromia: Caitrin's right eye is blue and her left is brown. It's not uncommon in her family, but most of those who have it are 'odd people'. Theoretically it is the source of her ability to see through glamours and to see faeries as they truly are (which can piss off some of them if she lets on in public).
- A Playful Shadow: Caitrin's shadow is an annoying anomaly, and she's not quite sure what to make of it. What she does know: it isn't possessed; it is her own shadow; it isn't actually alive in terms of preternatural biology (it may be ~super~natural though); it isn't her soul; it doesn't detach when she is asleep or awake in any unusual way; and that it seems to understand English, though it doesn't communicate meaningfully. What she doesn't know: if there is any way to control it; why it acts like a moronic goofball on crack; if it actually cares about anything; if it can be used against her or by her in any way; and whether or not it is a curse or spell that she's under that she hasn't managed to cast off or unravel. Whatever the case, her shadow acts of its own accord, and doesn't seem to be limited to her personal appearance, though it is limited by the light and darkness she's in. Most people hardly notice it, but when they do there are always weird, obnoxious, and unanswerable questions.
- Strange Attractor: It is definitely some kind of curse. What kind of curse, Caitrin doesn't know. Nor does she know who put it on her. It is effectively the ancient Chinese curse made manifest: "May you live in interesting times." The effect is all too straightforward; every now and then, for no discernible reason, weird shit happens around her. Not necessarily ~to~ her, which is very bad, as something seemingly innocuous as a friend getting a visit from their grandparent becomes quite distressing and involved when said grandparent turns out to have been dead for some time. Needless to say it has put her a little on edge, and much of her reclusive behavior comes from the fact that if she is by herself, the strange things happen around her more directly and she can usually deal with it much more easily. That is the only good point - she usually ~can~ deal with whatever happens, in some way or another. As of yet, nothing truly dangerous or life-changing has happened, but the possibility exists. Caitrin is fairly certain that this is part of why Karen comes around, but she doubts that there is any real connection outside of Karen being really weird.
