WIP: A Gummed Up Zebra

Fun fact: Fruit Stripe is a brand of chewing gum that features a rainbow striped Zebra as its mascot.


The hermit of the Everfree hummed softly as she rummaged through the underbrush. Her eyes and hands, both practiced and keen, were quick to pick out the best specimens. She eyed a small, oddly shaped flower nestled amongst the shrubbery.
"What's this that I see? An Angel's Bell, could it be?"
Zecora plucked the golden flower, holding it to the light as it let out a small, pleasant jingle. A creamy, sweet scent wafted off the bulb. Zecora smiled. It was the real deal.
"This has been a most fortunate find, for this flower may be, the last of its kind!"
Opening the burlap pouch that hung by her side, the Zebrican placed the flower into a small jar that laid within and closed the lid tightly. She would have to extract the seeds of this important, and rare, ingredient the moment she returned home.
She pilfered a few additional common herbs and mushrooms and stood up to leave, satisfied with the results of her scavenging. Her walk along the path home was for the most part uneventful - a rare occurrence in the Everfree Forest. She could not help but grin at her good luck.
"Such a peaceful day to be out and about! Nothing can go wrong now, I haven't a doubt!
Of course she immediately tripped and fell off the path.

Zecora yelped in surprise as she tumbled down the raised path, rolling a few dozen feet down the bumpy sides of the raised path before eventually landing in a pile of dried leaves. She moaned in pain and irritation. She was only battered, but the contents of her pouch had fared far worse if the tinkling of broken glass was any indication. The now irate zebra snorted, sitting up and scowling.
"Curse my bad luck, I curse it now, fu... what?"
Zecora's cry of anger trailed off as she noticed her surroundings. She was in an unfamiliar clearing with a small stream running through it. Beautiful flowers lined the ground, and a fragrant aroma permeated the air. Zecora began wandering around the interesting locale, taking in the sight and smells.
"This place, I can't say i've seen it before. This forest still hides many secrets and more."
She breathed the perfumed air deeply. It was pleasant of course, but there was something in there that was stronger; a sweet smell, not like a flower, but more like candy. Something about it reminded the zebra of her childhood and homelands...
There.
It caught her eye, and she broke out in a wide smile, before sprinting towards the object of her newfound desire: a tree, with bark tinted ever so slightly magenta and oozing a thick pink goop that could only be...

"The sweet chewing sap of the Bubbadub tree! I've not had this treat since I was but three!"
The Bubbadub tree was a rare species of rubber tree that normally only grew in Zebrica. What made it so special was it's resin; it was bright pink, loaded with sugar and flavorings, and extremely elastic. It was extremely rare to find more than a few grams on a tree, so it was often used as, and considered, a highly valuable and expensive gift to zebra young. Businessponies had gone as far as to try and artificially replicate the flavor and texture of the sap, and although it came nowhere close to the actual sap, it still sold well on shelves worldwide, though typically referred to as 'bubble gum'.
But this tree... It was practically bursting at the seams with the pink gold,  It's contents likely worth millions.
Zecora wasted no time in grabbing a large hunk of the oozing sap and stuffing it into her mouth. Her jaws would murder her tomorrow, but she didn't care.
