Grettir - Ill stab and slash

Grettir became so ill that he was unable to stand.

When the men saw that they were getting nowhere, they climbed up onto the roof of the hut and started ripping it open. Grettir now got to his feet and, seizing a spear, he thrust it up between the rafters.

Grettir could not get up from his knees; still, he took hold of his sax, Kar's-Gift, just as the men jumped down into the hut. A hard fight followed, and Grettir struck with the sax at Vikar, one of Hjalti Thordarson's followers, just at the instant that the man jumped into the hut. The blow landed on Vikar's left shoulder-joint and then, cutting across the upper part of his back, the sword came out on the man's right side, slicing him apart. The body fell in two pieces on top of Grettir, so that he was unable to raise his sax back up as quickly as he needed.

Now they turned back to Grettir, who had fallen forward. No fight was lift in him; he was already at the point of death from the wound in his leg.
