- Clannad Review
- --------------
- I'm not a big fan of slice of life, so that definitely colors my perception of Clannad. If you love slice of life, you'll probably love literally all of Clannad.
- -- SCHOOL ROUTES --
- As for me, I thought some of the school parts dragged really hard.
- Yukine's whole route was aimless and pointless.
- Kyou / Ryou's route was high school drama stuff that also ended up boring.
- Misae as a character was fine but her route was weird too. Cat, lol.
- Tomoyo's was kind of boring too, but eh, it worked out ok I guess. Mostly for how Tomoya grew during it.
- Not all of it was bad, though. I enjoyed pretty much all the interactions with Fuko, Sunohara, Mae, and Nagisa. Though, the stars of the show were obviously Nagisa's parents. Any scene with them was either touching or hilarious but most often both. I also enjoyed Tomoya's internal struggles and his conflict with his deadbeat dad. I'm a sucker for a flawed protagonists with lots of internal monologuing.
- Playing pranks on Fuko and Sunohara is always fun, though: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/135018161
- It falls off once in a while. ~SHOCKU~
- -- AFTER STORY --
- After Story as a whole was way better than High School stuff. Tomoya and Nagisa growing, lots more scenes with Nagisa's parents, and even Fuko, too.
- All the stuff with Nagisa having the baby was predictable, but even so, it induced the right amount of tension and drama...and I didn't expect Tomoya to react in the way he did, so that part was quite good too. Ushio was adorable and all the parts with her were really great as well.
- After Story is definitely the main draw, for me.
- -- ILLUSIONARY WORLD --
- I appreciated the setting and storytelling present in the Illusionary World segments. However, the connections to the main story were confusing and poorly explained. I totally get what happened, but I don't really understand how or why it worked the way it did.
- I actually generally like when they introduce a drop of fantasy in an otherwise plain story, but stuff like this needs to have clearly defined rules / an explation or it ends up just feeling like a Deus Ex Machina. I thought they were going to explain it more with the mention of Kotomi's Parent's research and the fact that Nagisa remembered hearing the story of the Illusionary World...but neither of those plot points ever got brought back up.
- Feels like they took this idea and improved on it a whole lot in Rewrite, to be honest.
- ----
- CHARACTER RANKINGS (COMEDY)
- Akio
- Fuko
- Sunohara
- Sanae
- Yoshino
- Everyone else
- CHARACTER RANKING (FEELS)
- Fuko
- Nagisa
- Ushio
- Kotomi
- It's weird but I got the closest to feeling the thing you humans call emotions during the end of Fuko's route. Parts of Nagisa's route and the after story also generated these alleged "feels".
- tl;dr Slice of Life fans will eat it up, but there's some substance beyond that, too. Overall, though, I'd say I probably enjoyed Rewrite more!
