  1. The origins of dwarves lies with the most ancient giants. It used to be that the giants would consume all of their dead, and had no qualms about doing so. The only things that would be left were their bones and nails. But the giants began to develop civilization, and with that honor. It is said that once, two giant warriors came into conflict with each other, and one ripped the other's guts open with his finger. The slain giant's innards spilled out upon the ground and he died. The one who had slain him was hungry, but thought, I would not want to be eaten. I will wait to see what happens.
  2. [9:05 PM]
  3. So the giant sat and watched. Birds came to feast upon the innards which had spilled out, and a rank odor filled the air, Flies came to eat the meat and carcass as well, and the giant grew disgusted. But among the spilled innards and filth, the kidneys remained undisturbed, for they were full of poison. However, they eventually began to stir, unfold, and stretch out into the forms of squat creatures. The victorious giant took them in his hands and carried them back to his home, where he showed them to his wife and family, and the knowledge of their existence spread to the other giants.
  4. [9:06 PM]
  5. These creatures were called duwoffs, and were the precursor to the modern dwarf.
  6. [9:08 PM]
  7. From then on, whenever a giant was slain his kidneys were taken to be reborn into duwoffs. They were raised like pets, and duwoff husbandry became a hobby for the richer of giants. Duwoffs always were spawned as one male and one female per giant, and shared no likeness or similarity to the giant who birthed them.
  8. [9:11 PM]
  9. Duwoffs were seen first as curiosities, then workers, and finally slaves. Their smaller size allowed the giants a greater variety in clothing and crafted goods, since they were able to create and work on a more precise scale than the giants were previously capable of. Thus giants were able to revolutionize their aesthetics of clothes as well as the quality and artistry of their crafting, though it was truly the duwoffs whose existence they held in secret who were giving them the revolutions they laid claim to.

  12. THe duwoffs were subservient to the giants as a child would be to its parents, and the giants all benefitted from the duwoffs' presence so they only encouraged them to become better. Thoughts of escape or revolution never entered their minds, as they had no conception that they were slaves.

  16. The one who would put the idea of revolution and freedom into the minds of the duwoffs was the Cyclops, first of his kind. It was his duty to teach them the ways of making and crafting. While they did all that he told them to and excelled at all things, it broke his heart that they could take no pride in their work or cherish what they had made. So in secret, he removed one of his own kidneys and let it grow into a duwoff, and taught him all that he knew and to take pride in his work, and value his own life.
  17. [5:57 AM]
  18. That duwoff's name was Nulminaar, and his name meant 'without a lover,' for he had no female to call his own as all others did. The duwoffs were not permitted to procreate, and had no knowledge of such things in the first place. Nulminaar's sense of pride as well as his lack of partnership drove him to revolt to fill his desires for fulfillment. The other duwoffs heard his call to arms, and learned of the value of their lives besides being workers and robots, and revolted.
  19. [5:59 AM]
  20. The duwoffs overthrew the giants who held them as slaves and escaped, fighting and defending themselves as they ran. They found lands to settle in, and developed into the earliest dwarves that we know of today. The giants who had lost them then went to fight other giants, which led to the collapse and fracturing of giant society. To this day, though, a duwoff may be born from the kidneys of a slain giant.
