  1. The six-armed Prince Nata.
  2. The Heaven-born Handsome Stone Monkey King.
  3. Meeting, each met his match
  4. And found each to be from the same source.
  5. One was consigned to come down to Earth.
  6. The other in guile disturbed the universe.
  7. The edge of the monster-stabbing sword was quick;
  8. The keen, monster-cleaving scimitar alarmed demons and gods;
  9. The monster-binding rope was like flying snake;
  10. The monster-taming club was like the head of a wolf;
  11. The lightning-propelled fiery wheel was like darting flames;
  12. Hither and thither the embroidered ball rotated.
  13.
  14. The three compliant rods of the Great Sage
  15. Protected the front and guarded the rear with care and skill.
  16. A few rounds of bitter contest revealed no victor,
  17. But the prince's mind would not so easily rest.
  18. He ordered the six kinds of weapon to change
  19. Into hundreds and thousands of millions, aiming for the head.
  20. The Monkey King, undaunted, roared with laughter loud,
  21. And wielded his iron rod with artful ease:
  22. One turned to a thousand, a thousand to ten thousand,
  23. Filling the sky as a swarm of dancing dragons,
  24. And shocked the Monster Kings of sundry caves into shutting their doors.
  25.
  26. Demons and monsters all over the mountain hid their heads.
  27. The angry breath of divine soldiers was like oppressive clouds.
  28. The golden-hooped iron rod whizzed like the wind.
  29. On this side
  30. The battle cries of celestial fighters appalled everyone;
  31. On that side,
  32. The banner-waving of monkey monsters startled each person.
  33. Growing fierce, the two parties both willed a test of strength.
  34. We know not who was stronger and who weaker.
  35.
  36. Each displaying his divine powers, the Third Prince and Wukong battled
  37. for thirty rounds. The six weapons of that prince changed into a thousand
  38. and ten thousand pieces; the golden-hooped rod of Sun Wukong into ten
  39. thousand and a thousand. They clashed like raindrops and meteors in the
  40. air, but victory or defeat was not yet determined.
