- FADE IN:
- EXT. View large crowded square people milling around – DAY
- Pan over the crowd. Just people going about their daily business. The view settles on a boy sitting back to a wall, eyes flickering over the crowd. He spots a robed and hooded character moving through the crowd. He gets up and moves toward him and reaches the figure as they get to the edge of the crowd.
- Time voice over to match the above events as they unfold.
- GARRETT (VOICEOVER)
- I was a kid. No parents, no home. Running messages and picking pockets to keep my ribs from meeting my spine. One day I saw a man, folks just passed him by like he wasn’t there. I thought he might have something valuable, so I snuck up on him, and made a grab.
- (a figure creeping up behind the Keeper, he whirls and grabs the figure by the wrist. in the hand is a wallet.)
- KEEPER
- That’s not for you.
- YOUNG Garrett
- Please sir, I’m hungry. Don’t tell the Hammers, I promise
- KEEPER
- (Still holding the wrist)
- What is your name, boy?
- YOUNG GARRETT
- (struggling)
- Garrett.
- KEEPER
- You have Talent lad.
- YOUNG Garrett
- (Struggling More)
- Let go of me old man!
- KEEPER
- To see a keeper is not an easy thing
- (beat)
- Especially one who does not wish to be seen. We have a need for those as gifted as yourself. If you’ve grown tired of how you live, boy, then follow me, and we’ll show you a different way.
- YOUNG GARRETT
- Leave me alone!
- KEEPER
- (he lets Garrett go)
- As you wish.
- (The man moves away, and Garrett watches him leave. Conflict is showing on his face. Garrett moves tentatively after the man. )
- GARRETT (VOICEOVER)
- I caught up with him just before he vanished into the crowd. It was the beginning of a very long education.
- FADE OUT.
- FADE IN.
- EXT. Very close of Garrett standing on top of the firestone tower facing the setting sun. Garrett is silhouetted against the setting sun. Camera positioned on building east of tower to catch the sunset and Garrett. – SUNSET
- (View pulls back to reveal Garrett standing on top of very tall tower.)
- GARRETT (VOICEOVER)
- The keepers watch over the city. Recording Events as they happen. With a strict policy of never interfering with those events.
- (Sarcasm)
- A policy they hardly ever break
- (End sarcasm)
- Their training taught me a lot of things. Things that I eventually decided I had other uses for than what they had in mind for me. Before my training was completed we (beat) parted company.
- The sun fades behind the mountains and Garrett moves to climb down from the tower.
- FADE OUT.

- The most promising acolyte left us
- not out of the lesser folly of sentiment,
- but out of the greater folly of anger.
- His heart was clouded and his balance lost,
- but his abilities were unmatched. Even then
- We knew to watch him most closely.
- From the Keeper archives.
- FADE IN.
- EXT. on a flat roof. – Night
- Garrett<VOICEOVER>
- That was a long time ago, and things are different now. I have a simple job planned for this evening. Break into a guarded building, and steal a trinket for a client. He told me it’s a family heirloom that his brother lost in a card game, and I’m cheaper than paying the money he owes. I don’t really care, his money’s good and this sounded like it would be an easy job. <beat> I should be home by midnight.
- (Garrett is on a roof, picking the lock to the roof hatch. it surrenders quickly and he moves inside.)
- Cut to:
- INT. Mechanical room at the top of building. Engines and machines can be seen and heard.
- (Garrett moves through the room, looking for the elevator shaft, he finds it, and drops a coil of rope down it. And starts down.)
