  51. Abstract
  52. Technology, markets, and ongoing economic growth are typically offered as the means for resolving the energy and environmental problems that economic growth produces. Within that perspective, the affluent and mobile suburban way of life is rarely questioned, because it is assumed that it can be decarbonised. To the extent it is questioned, vertical sprawl is generally offered as the solution. After briefly outlining the logic of this techno-optimistic worldview, this chapter offers critical thoughts on its key assumptions. Alexander and Gleeson argue that the limitations of alternative energy sources (nuclear and renewables) offer further grounds for thinking that a post-carbon urban future will be an energy descent future. The authors then narrow their focus by offering a critique of electric vehicles and conclude that a post-carbon suburbia will be a reduced-mobility world of walking, cycling, public transport, infrequent airflight, and more broadly, increased localisation of economy.
