A new face comes into your bar looking a bit worse for wear. Turning on your classic bartender charm, you offer them a smile, a drink and your company. In an attempt to cheer them up, you listen to their problems and offer some friendly words of comfort.

[chuckle] I like to greet everyone like that, actually. It's all in good fun.

Mhm. Everyone. It's just something I like doing. Try to get a smile out of my customers even before I serve them, y'know?

But I do apologise if that was a bit much.

You're good? Wonderful. Welcome, by the way. It's nice to see a new face here.

Well, I know my regulars. And I'm pretty sure I'd remember *you*. [chuckle]

Anyways, would you like a table? Or are you going to sit here at the bar?

Here? Perfect.

Just give me a second, ok? I need to take care of another customer. You can take a look at the drink menu in the meantime. I'll be right with you.


[to other customer] Hey there! How's it going?

Really? [chuckle] Sounds like you *do* need a drink. Do you want the usual?

One old fashioned coming right up. You don't get tired of these, do you?

[chuckle] Of course you don't, big guy.

Here you go. I'll catch up with you later, yeah?

[to listener] Ok, now you have my full attention! What's up?

Oh, him? Yeah, he's one of my regulars.

He's been coming here for a long time, so we're pretty close.

Mmhm.

Anything catch your eye, by the way? [coy] Besides him?

[laughs] That face! I'm only messing with you. For real, though, what can I get you?

Really? Someone after my own heart.

Yep. It's one of my favourites. [SFX: drink pouring]

It's hard to mess up, so I'd expect it to taste good most of the time.

[chuckle] Thanks.

Hm? Oh, it's no problem. I'm not super busy tonight, so I can keep you company.

I mean...if that's what you want?

Great! I love getting to know my new customers.

It's a small bar, so I get to talk to pretty much everyone.

But I also offer the "comfortable silence" package, where I'll serve your drinks with a smile, and we can keep the small talk to a minimum. We don't even have to talk, if you'd prefer that. So again, what can I get you?

I thought as much. You look like you could use a bit of chatter and a smile.

You decided to sit right at the bar, so I had a feeling.

So? What's the action?

[laughs] Yeah nobody uses that phrase! Like ever. I just think it's fun to say.

Sure, feel free. I know it might be a bit weird to vent to a stranger, but sometimes you just need someone to listen. And I'm a bartender, so I should be good at listening, right? Ask what's-his-name over there.

[laughs] I'm kidding, I'm kidding! Go ahead, I'll listen. Promise.

You're right, that does *not* sound good.


Wow. Sounds like you had quite the day. What made you come into my bar then, if I may ask?

Rustic? [chuckle] That's good to know. It's what I'm going for, so mission accomplished.

But back to your crappy day. Do you want to talk about it some more?

Like...do you want more time to vent? Do you want some friendly advice? Or do you want me to get mad with you?

Rational too, hm? I'm liking you more and more.

Yeah. As good as it might feel, you just end up wasting your energy getting mad about what other people think.

Which of course is a lot easier said than done. Trust me, I know. It's not like you can suddenly be super confident and comfortable with yourself. Other people can get to you no matter what.

Oh, and feel free to stop me at any time. I obviously don't know your situation, so I don't want to say something that goes too far.

Sure thing.

So yeah, like I was saying, I know it can be pretty difficult to ignore what people think of you, but it's important to remember that it's ok to like the things that you like. It's ok to be yourself.

It's more than ok.

And I know hearing all of this from a stranger is...probably not *ideal*, [chuckle] but I dunno. I think it's nice. It makes me believe in human kindness.

Well, I only met you today, and I'm more than happy to give you a bit of a pep talk to try and lift your spirits. [teasing] And I don't want to toot my own horn, but I think that makes me rather kind, no?

I guess I can say this because...look at me. Look at *this bar*. You might not have guessed it, but I'm a huge geek.

Yeah. Videogames, anime, tabletop RPG's, you name it.

And the bar, well...I didn't come up with all this décor by myself. I actually modeled this place after some other bar. It's from...how about I let you figure that out for yourself.

If you *do* know what bar I'm talking about, then we can be best friends.

The warm, rustic feel is nice, isn't it?

Yeah it is pretty cozy.

Anyways, my point is, I have no problem wearing my geek on my sleeve. [laughs]

[to another customer] Back again, are we? Another old fashioned?

Oh, for the girl you were talking to. [chuckle] Yeah, I know what she's drinking. I'll have it ready in a bit.


And...your drinks. Don't go breaking too many hearts, hear me?


[to listener] No no, he's great. I told you, one of my regulars, remember?

He's *far* from a player, let me tell you that much. He's one of the most genuine guys I know.

[teasing] Why, are you interested? Want me to play matchmaker?

Ooh, quick with the comebacks there! [laughs]

But see that girl he's chatting with?

Yeah, she's been here for a *while*. She should probably get something to eat, actually.

It's also her first time here. And I can tell she doesn't come to bars much. Maybe she will now.

They *do* look pretty cute together, you're right.

Enough about them, though. Back to you.

Hm? Oh yeah, I'm super open with what I'm all about. I wanted to say earlier that if you can be comfortable being yourself, then who cares what others think.

And if you *do* want to care what someone else thinks about you, care about what *I* think. From this time we've spent together, I think you're great. And I think you're strong enough to wear *your* geek on your sleeve.
